Worcester Polytechnic Institute • Worcester, MA
Studying Computer Science (completion in 1992)

"As mentioned before, college prepares you to learn. But, I learned more in my first month on the job than I did in 4 years of college."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

Would Recommend?yesIt's a very good school and has a great reputation. It is ranked highly every year.
Program Reputation10As mentioned before, WPI is always rated highly across the country and is in the top 10 regionally. The program is very good.
Program Quality8Very good school for technology. I don't think any college prepares you fully for the real world as I learned more in my first 2-4 weeks on the job than I did in 4 years of college.
Instruction10WPI is always rated highly across the country and in the top 10 regionally. The program is very good.
How Difficult9Being a technical school so close to MIT, the coursework was very challenging. Some classes weeded people out of majors.
Hands-On vs. BookishTo graduate, you had to do 3 projects. Two of these projects were in the real world.
Schedule Flexibility7They do provide after hours classes. I never took advantage of these as I was a traditional student.
Academic Facilities10The reason I chose this school over Notre Dame, which I also got into, was because of the Computer Department. It was very advanced in 1988 when I started.
Social Life6People were friendly and fun, but it was a typical engineering school. The ratio of men to women was 6 to 1.
Placement Services8I had many interviews set up through the school during my senior year. This was in the recession of 1992, so that was important.
Alumni Network8I'm always receiving emails, postal mail, and their magazine, even 19 years later. They are not always solicitations for money; some are very informative.

Greenfield Community College • Greenfield, MA
Studying Computer Science (completion in 2009)

"I am very happy with the foundation Greenfield gave me. I have a good job, and I feel prepared to continue my education in the future (I intend to go back to school and get a bachelor's in computer science, and maybe a master's in a more specific field)."

Would Recommend?yesGreenfield is a great place to start. It was affordable and offered a good education. If I could go back, I would have done the same thing.
Program Reputation3Greenfield is not well known. It has a great program, but not many people know about it.
Program Quality9I was surprised at the resources provided by a small community college. Everything was up to date. There were also enough resources for everyone, which is not true for every institution.
Instruction8Tech support is one of the most stressful jobs, however I always feel well prepared. I had some not so great professors, but also some amazing ones. They were all knowledgeable, regardless of whether they were good professors.
How Difficult5I felt like there could have been more work. I held a part time job and went to school full time very easily. I think the program could have been more challenging.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe read out of textbooks some times, but for the most part we were always using the computers. It was very hands on. It was a great way for me to learn.
Schedule Flexibility8There are summer, online, and evening classes in addition to the regular time classes. This was great for me, as someone living and working on my own. It also makes an education possible for parents.
Academic Facilities8The computer science resources were always up to date. I did not spend a huge amount of time in the library, but it seemed proficient. The professors were always accessible and eager to help.
Social Life3I did not have much school spirit. As a community college, I don't think there was much school spirit, but I made some great friends.
Placement Services9Again, I had a great experience getting my current job right after graduation with the help of Greenfield. I am very happy with their services.
Alumni Network9I think the alumni network is great. This may be because I got a very good job through Greenfield right after I graduated. Some of my fellow students have also commented on how good the network is.

Bunker Hill Community College • Boston, MA
Studying Computer Science (completion in 2008)

"I don't think it was the best school. They certainly could have done better. I hear they're improving now. They added more free facilities, like the gym and the study hall."

Would Recommend?maybeIt's easy to get to, but they need better teachers who will do a better job; teachers who will pay close attention to their lesson plans and are organized.
Program Reputation7Their schedules are flexible and the financial aid department is serious about getting kids into school.
Program Quality5They have internships in this field. I got a lot of experience from that.
Instruction8I could have learned more than what was available, I think. The course was not covered thoroughly enough.
How Difficult4I've been always into electronics so it wasn't hard for me to get into it. I enjoy technology as a whole.
Hands-On vs. BookishI like books and I think it's easier for me to learn that way. They actually offer free borrowed books to the first 1000 students each semester. I don't think a lot of schools do that.
Schedule Flexibility10They have more than one location if you are unable to attend the Boston location. They have another in Chelsea, Massachusetts. The commuter rail stops right in front of the school, it's easy to get to.
Academic Facilities6They should increase the budget to keep the school in running order. They need more employees, especially in the admissions and financial aid office.
Social Life10It's a very diverse school. You see everyone from everywhere, including students from Europe. They have international students so you learn from people from other continents, too.
Placement Services9They help you step into your desired job. They have helped me a lot with internships and eventually to my current job with all that experience.
Alumni Network5They are willing to accept students as volunteer workers. They let you help out the school and their current students by sharing your past experience there.
Review your current or past school and help others make better career decisions.
