Studying Electrical Engineering (completion in 2003)

• 11/17/2011
"I received a well rounded engineering education. I think the depth of education is decreasing as I talk to more recent graduates."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | yes | Engineering is fundamentally is about analysis, synthesis, and constraint optimization. You'll get a good introduction to the basics. |
| Program Reputation | 7 | People I meet seem to be impressed with the quality of engineers. It's above average, but not Stanford. |
| Program Quality | 8 | The mathematics and engineering classes were fairly rigorous. However, it wasn't MIT. |
| Instruction | 7 | Like any school, some outstanding professors were inspiring and challenging. Most were just there to present material. |
| How Difficult | 6 | At the time I was being challenged by around 25% of the classes. In retrospect, I should have had to work harder. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | We had both theory classes and labs. We designed and built filters from components and wrote assembly as well as learning the theory. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 5 | I don't have a basis for comparison. Freshman classes were often early. More senior classes seemed to be convenient. |
| Academic Facilities | 9 | With an on-site VLSI Fab, nuclear reactor, and a great library network, the technical resources were both broad and deep. Looking down at the blue glow of Cherenkov radiation in a live reactor is pretty neat. |
| Social Life | 5 | I made some good friends. I knew many people going to the school. |
| Placement Services | 3 | Being a serial entrepreneur, I did not avail myself of their career placement services. I don't know anyone who received a job that way. |
| Alumni Network | 3 | I'm not a member of the alumni club. While I have keep in touch with friends from college, I'm not aware of any support. |
