"The school taught me the skills needed to successfully plan curriculum, utilize class time, and enforce classroom management. Some of the more theoretical practices weren't applicable though and it felt like a waste of time."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | I would recommend it to people not wanting to leave the sate or spend a lot of money. The program is designed to teach you the basics in order to meet the state standards so you can get into a classroom. |
| Program Reputation | 5 | The program is good for people wanting to become teachers in the state of Hawaii, but who don't want to or are unable to study abroad. The program provides what you need in order to teach. |
| Program Quality | 5 | The program teaches a lot of childhood education theories that don't transfer well into the classroom setting. However, it is affordable and does teach the essential basics needed. |
| Instruction | 7 | The program was good at covering the basics and answering any questions I had. The educational theory is not very applicable in the real world setting. |
| How Difficult | 6 | The hardest part was finding time to sit in on actual classrooms for my observation assignments. The papers were easy though, because it was simple to find academic journals on a variety of subjects pertaining to this field. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | There was a great deal of time spent in actual classrooms, where we observed and interacted with students. Likewise, there was an equal amount of studying and lectures. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 5 | Classes were mostly held during normal daytime hours. There were some classes that were geared more towards unconventional hours though, but not as many. |
| Academic Facilities | 8 | The campus provided adequate resources that were available when needed. The support services were easy to get via appointment, and the bibliographies available were comprehensive. |
| Social Life | 6 | The campus was fairly conservative and calm. There were organized events, but nothing as crazy like in the movies. People behaved like adults mostly. |
| Placement Services | 7 | They outline the exact steps and routes you need to take in order to be hired by the department of education. They also have handouts and counselors that are readily available. |
| Alumni Network | 5 | I wasn't involved in a lot of alumni activities. The teachers were extremely supportive and insightful though and took time to answer any questions I might have had. |
