University Of Southern Mississippi • Hattiesburg, MS
Studying Elementary Education (completion in 1965)

"The instruction I received at USM has never failed to meet the requirements and knowledge-base needed to teach in public schools in Mississippi. I have always felt prepared to meet the challenges I face in classroom situations."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI can think of no better place to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills that are needed to teach in any classroom situation. Whenever the challenge is too great, the instructors at USM are readily available to offer assistance in helping one meet those challenges.
Program Reputation10Working with new graduates from USM has revealed that the current requirements for a B.S. degree in Education are even more stringent than they were thirty or more years ago.
Program Quality10USM, before it was a university was well-known throughout the state as a major college for training teachers. Education was the foundation of the University from the start. It eventually evolved to offer degrees in numerous other fields but has kept its reputation as being a great institution for the training of teachers.
Instruction10The School of Education at USM provided hands-on experience with working with students in its student-teaching program. One could discover whether one has a love for teaching and interacting with children before the completion of the Ed. degree program.
How Difficult8The program of study encompasses many education courses, but it also requires a firm foundation in science, arts, and history. Students were well-prepared to meet the challenges that come with teaching a variety of subject matter.
Hands-On vs. BookishAs stated earlier, students pursuing a B.S. degree in Education at USM are provided with opportunities to teach while learning about the profession. The campus provided a 'learning lab' where kindergarten children attended daily and were accessible to students working toward certification in lower-elementary education.
Schedule Flexibility8The School of Education at USM has always worked with students to accommodate work/study programs, scheduling alternative classes at night or on extension into distant communities. They have been quick to open new class sessions when one section becomes full during enrollment to accommodate additional students who wish to take a course.
Academic Facilities10USM has always provided excellent library resources, computer labs, and graduate-level TAs to help students thrive and be successful in their various programs. Each student is assigned a staff instructor who assists in class selection, the scheduling of classes, and helping to choose specialized fields of study.
Social Life5Having been a commuting day-student at USM, I rarely participated in extra-curricular activities so have limited knowledge about them. It is my understanding that USM is not known for having a party reputation.
Placement Services8Never having utilized the job placement program available at USM, I cannot say how valuable it is to new graduates. Fellow teachers who have used their services speak highly of them, however.
Alumni Network5The Alumni Association at USM rarely contacts its members with ongoing campus activities. They contact them annually when dues are to be collected or donations to the association are solicited.

University Of Mississippi • Oxford, MS
Studying Accountancy (completion in 2005)

"I love Ole Miss. It made me happy."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesAnyone going into accounting would be a fool not to go to Ole Miss. I realize this is a survey for teachers, and I do teach now. I did accounting for three years before opting to teach math as a way to spend more time with my children.
Program Reputation10Again, we are consistently ranked in the top 25 programs in the country. The school is also very small and selective of its students.
Program Quality10The University of Mississippi has one of the best accountancy programs in the country. They are consistently ranked in the top 25.
Instruction10My professors were very interesting and well qualified. Most of them were teaching out of textbooks they had written. There was also a lot of hands-on practical work that was instrumental in preparing me for work after college.
How Difficult9As a top ranked program, Ole Miss is challenging. If it were easy, it wouldn't be prestigious.
Hands-On vs. BookishVery, very mixed. Some teachers were much more hands-on than others, especially in the tax curriculum. However, all professors gave some hands-on work.
Schedule Flexibility7Freshman and sophomore years are more flexible, as most classes cross-list with the general business school. Once you enter the professional program junior year, the schedule is more rigid due to small class sizes.
Academic Facilities10There is state-of-the-art equipment for the entire school of accountancy. Ole Miss is also home to the AICPA National Library.
Social Life10It's Ole Miss. Enough said. School spirit is alive and well.
Placement Services10We have 100% job placement. This is due mainly to the excellent internship program in place that gives college seniors 3 months of on-the-job training.
Alumni Network10Alumni are very informed and involved. Frequent alumni emails, hardcopy mail-outs, and weekend events keep us close.
