Plymouth State University • Plymouth, NH
Studying General Special Education (completion in 2007)

"I found that everyone from the administration to the professors were very concerned with making sure the students were successful in the program. While flexible, the expectations were high. This was not a program that anyone could walk through, and in fact there were a few that didn't. They instilled professionalism and were more than willing to support the students in meeting the standard."

Would Recommend?yesPlymouth would be a good choice for someone looking for a MEd while working. The program is very flexible but also demands you take it seriously. I feel that anyone who goes through their program would be considered well trained.
Program Reputation7Plymouth is not as well-known as some of the larger schools in the state like UNH or Keene State. Within the general community I find that people are more impressed by other schools, but within the school it is just as well respected as any other school.
Program Quality9My program encouraged us to look beyond what was happening in our local schools. We looked at historical trends in education and conducted a fair amount of research. The push was towards making standards based curriculum decisions in the classroom, as well as learning the current, scientifically based methods and learning how to stay abreast of new findings.
Instruction8The instructors in my program came from a wide range of backgrounds. I had professors that were currently working both in public and private schools in addition to their university duties. I also had professors that were psychologists and philosophy professors.
How Difficult8I found my program to be very challenging. There was a lot of reading and research involved. Despite that, there was a lot of support, and the timing of the program made it possible for me to continue to work full time.
Hands-On vs. BookishEverything we did, including the work for Research and Design, was intended to be used in the classroom. I found the course work to be integrated with my job quite well.
Schedule Flexibility10Scheduling was not a problem. There were many satellite locations available for courses, as well as intensive courses that took place over the course of a few weeks. They also offered online classes, which were very convenient, and weekend classes.
Academic Facilities8The library had wonderful online access, and I was able to get most of what I needed there. They were also willing to send items to my local library which was great considering I lived 2 hours from campus. My professors and advisors always responded to me within 24 hours.
Social LifeI attended Plymouth for graduate school. I did not take part in any social events, nor did I live near the campus.
Placement Services5I was employed while going through my program, so I had no need for job placement assistance. It was not something that was discussed during any of the advising meetings I had. My impression of this is fairly neutral.
Alumni Network5I know that there is an alumni association; however, they don't appear to be very active. Aside from receiving an email once a month to update me on campus news, I do not hear much about what my fellow alums are doing. I'm sure that there are networking opportunities within the association; however, they aren't publicized very well.

Would Recommend?yesThe size of the school is just right. It allows you to know and build relationships with your teachers, which allows for a better learning experience.
Program Reputation8Keene State has a very good reputation for its education program. They have an excellent partnership with public schools that provides real world experience.
Program Quality8Keene State is a very well regarded and professional school. The faculty is well informed and able to provide real world experience and accessibility.
Instruction8The faculty is well prepared and willing to provide their skills and knowledge to their classes. I was able to build one on one relationships that gave me additional insight into the education world.
How Difficult7I was challenged and found the program engaging and rewarding. It was essential to put time and effort into your studies to receive the full benefit of the instruction.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was a good mix but I could always use more hands on work. My learning style is very concrete and I enjoy field work.
Schedule Flexibility8I had no issues in scheduling or earning my credits. I worked at my own pace and was able to take the courses I needed to graduate.
Academic Facilities8The college resources were well represented and available. Support was readily available and professors were accessible.
Social Life8It was a great experience, and I am very pleased with my college time. I made good friends, built new relationships, and enjoyed being part of the college life.

Alumni NetworkI am aware of the school's alumni network. I have not had any need or opportunity to use it, though.

"I got everything I wanted out of my college years and more. They were some of my best memories and the friends I made there will be my friends for life."

Would Recommend?yesIf you are excited about the field of education and you want a school that wants you, you cannot go wrong with Keene. There are some minor details with Keene you may like to change, but the mountain of positives out weight the small hill of negatives.
Program Reputation6Keene is seen as an easy party school. I was focused on my major, however, and really tried to push myself and learn as much as possible.
Program Quality8The teachers knew their material very well and were good at explaining it to the students. There were some aspects about child psychology I wish they touched more on.
Instruction8We had many classes and hands on training that involved work with children. They focus on the work outside the college classroom to really get you ready to teach.
How Difficult7The classes were not too hard, but they were still challenging. I put my best effort into my classes and I was pleased with the result.
Hands-On vs. BookishThey tried to get us out of the classroom and into the classrooms we will be teaching in. I started to work with children during my sophomore year of school.
Schedule Flexibility10If you want to take a class at a certain time, they probably offer it. You can take classes from sun up to sun down.
Academic Facilities6Some of the academic buildings were getting up there in age and some of the technology was outdated. We had a very modern dining hall and also modern workout facilities.
Social Life10You could always find something to do at this school whether you liked to party, play video games, or attend a rather uneventful sporting event. There was a surprising amount of school spirit for a school that was terrible at sports.
Placement Services8I found it easy to find a job after college, but maybe that is just my profession. Keene definitely helped me to find my current job.
Alumni Network8There are a lot of graduates from Keene in the child education field that try to help all the undergraduates in classes with finding a job. There were a lot of opportunities to network and meet great people in your field.
Review your current or past school and help others make better career decisions.
