"My college provided an excellent education and springboard into my career. UVM has the personality and feel of a small college but the facilities of a large one."

Would Recommend?maybeI did not take any education classes while at UVM. I'm an elementary teacher because I applied to Teach for America and was placed in this position. I love my job and plan to stay a teacher. UVM is definitely great college to go to if you want to apply to Teach for America.
Program Reputation9The University of Vermont has been increasing it's standing on a yearly basis. I assume that the program is doing the same.
Program Quality8There are a lot of things that need to be improved at my school. We need increased funding to support the increased technicalities of the field.
Instruction10I had excellent professors who were at the top of their fields. They gave us every opportunity to expand our education and apply what we learned to the real world.
How Difficult7I feel that beginning courses were fairly easy, but that's to be expected with any course of study. As I progressed in my studies the workload and rigor of the courses increased.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere was a good mix of both hands on and book learning. Many of my classes had labs and a few required community service.
Schedule Flexibility9For the required courses there was a ton of flexibility! I had the options of day, evening, or summer courses. It was difficult to get into the classes that were highly sought after.
Academic Facilities8There was a lot of support for my program. Almost every class had a TA and professors were always available at least twice a week.
Placement Services5I didn't use the career service center. However, I'm sure that it would have been helpful if I had used it.
Alumni Network5The network sends out regular emails and hosts events. I feel that I could use it if I needed to.

"It can be a joy and a curse to work in a very small rural school. But the students make it worthwhile."

Would Recommend?maybeIn this difficult economy, a job is a blessing. But not everyone is able to be in a small school setting and thrive.
Program Reputation7The school used to be considered the best when I went there. Their ratings have slipped somewhat.
Program Quality10Our administration and school board supports the classroom and the school. They are child-oriented.
Instruction10Teachers in VT are expected to continually take classes and workshops to keep up-to-date with trends. Our teachers take pride in being their best for the students.
How Difficult5It is expected that any life career choice will require difficult training. My instructors were superb.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe have been trained extensively in differentiated learning. All styles of learning are employed to meet the needs of students.
Schedule Flexibility9Classes are offered year round to accommodate teachers who need to take classes. They are extremely flexible.
Academic Facilities6Our school is very tiny and it is difficult to find help that will consistently stay. We have a high turnover rate of staff.
Social Life5Because of our small size, each teacher is over burdened with extra duties. These things sometimes take a backseat due to other things needing to get done.
Placement Services4It seems as though it was up to individual to find his or her own job. I think it has improved since I went to school.
Alumni Network5It is difficult to always keep up on alumni things with careers and families. The school does its best to keep that in mind when planning events.

"I enjoyed the social aspects of school and the work toward my degree. Job searching and career preparation could have been improved."

Would Recommend?noI don't think it's for everyone. Unless you're really into books I would suggest a more modern approach if you want to teach. Learning the subject the traditional way doesn't change teaching style.
Program Reputation5The whole state's the same. However, Hampton roads is falling behind in math.
Program Quality4History and language aren't something they focus on; more so science and technology. But if we are to succeed in science and technology in a global economy we need to learn to interact with other cultures.
Instruction5Every school system in the state is struggling to match the curriculum and teaching styles to things that will actually help the students. I don't really use my education in following the curriculum it was kind of a waste.
How Difficult1The state is so worried about getting everyone to graduate that they've dumbed down the process. All students have the same problem: they're bored.
Hands-On vs. BookishEverything was by the book. There was one-semester internship; that was as hands-on as it got.
Schedule Flexibility10It offered nights, summer, online and in class.
Academic Facilities10There was nothing our school didn't offer but their career center left a lot to be desired.
Social Life10I was involved in 22 clubs on campus. I'd say that's pretty social .
Placement Services1My college didn't have a very good reputation for outside the state.
Alumni Network1They have no idea what happens to students after they leave the fifth grade.
