"I enjoyed my classes and felt that my education was valuable. The friendships, connections, and internships were quite valuable."

Would Recommend?yesI would absolutely recommend my university. My professors were of high quality and the classes were interesting.
Program Reputation9The Master of Social Work program has a strong reputation. It is a desirable school and most students were not admitted upon their first try. They are very selective.
Instruction6Several of my professors appeared to be out of touch with reality. I had a year long internship that was incredibly valuable.
How Difficult3Overall, my program was not academically challenging. I was often surprised by the writing abilities of other students in the Master's level program.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere were a great deal of lectures and book-learning. We were required, however, to complete 2 lengthy internships that were very valuable.
Schedule Flexibility8There was a good deal of flexibility in programming. In fact, I participated in a 3 year, night only program.
Academic Facilities8Classroom facilities and space were great. Professors were readily available and eager to help.
Social Life5In general, I did not participate socially with other students as I did not live on campus. However, the school spirit is tremendous, as is school loyalty.
Placement Services3Honestly, I did not utilize any career or placement services. I don't recall any being offered.
Alumni Network6The University encouraged all alumni to become involved and connected. Though I did not become involved, it was my choice and not because of a lack of support from the University.

Georgia Southwestern University • Americus, GA

"I felt that I learned so much while enrolled there. My education prepared me for the field I am still in today: social work!"

Would Recommend?maybeI say maybe because Social Work is not for just anyone. The hours are crazy, the things we see are not for the faint of heart and the pay is never going to make you rich. However, the reward is knowing I have truly made a difference, no matter how small it may be.
Program Reputation6I do not live in Americus anymore so I am unaware of how the program is viewed. Before, when I attended, the community knew very little about the Sociology program there.
Program Quality7I felt that GSWU has some great professors. My concern was that the Sociology/ Psychology department was very small and classes were often very limited.
Instruction8My professors were very involved and gave lots of "real life" experience to us. I felt that through my independent study classes I was very well prepared for my career.
How Difficult6The courses were very in depth and required lots of hands work on to pass. Professors were always readily available to assist.
Hands-On vs. BookishMy professors offered a great mix of both. I feel that I learned book and real life knowledge while there.
Schedule Flexibility3In core classes there was tons of flexibility, but in the Sociology Department class options were very limited. There were only a handful of professors so classes were often only offered at one time each quarter. As a nontraditional student I was lucky to have an employer who was willing to allow me to change my schedule as needed to accommodate classes.
Academic Facilities8The campus was small but well equipped. Professors were always available.
Social Life5I never came to the games and socials because I was a mom of two while enrolled. I was a member of the Sociology/Psychology Club and a tour guide for the campus. The school was always holding some social event to get students involved.
Placement Services2I never received assistance from this program and had to find my own job. This program was very unused when I attended.
Alumni Network1I have not been contacted since graduation in May 2001. I feel very "forgotten."

Mercer University School Of Medicine • Macon, GA
Studying Marriage & Family Therapy (completion in 2012)

"I feel that I learned a lot from the program, and expanded my skill set. The faculty and facilities were adequate. I feel like I got a good value for my experience."

Would Recommend?yesI would definitely recommend this school, based on breadth of experiences alone. I know many MSW's, LPC's, and MFT's who don't have the level of knowledge that I do because of the narrow focus of their programs.
Program Reputation9People always respond positively when I tell them I went to Mercer. That alone has landed me two job offers!
Program Quality9My program provided a broad base to build on. Professors were approachable and encouraged learning outside the classroom.
Instruction8Again, the program provided an excellent breadth of study. While I could have asked for more preparation prior to practicum, the practicum and supervision experience provided excellent orientation to the work world.
How Difficult7I know others found the material challenging, but I didn't find it particularly difficult. The emphasis was mostly on clinical as opposed to academic or research, which made the program easier than others.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere is a strong emphasis on experiential learning. That said, students who failed to read suffered the consequences.
Schedule Flexibility93 nights a week, 5-9. Practicum on your own time. It's flexible enough!
Academic Facilities7The library, because we were part of a med school, was less than ideal. Most resources focused on marital issues or medical family therapy, with less for general MH and C&A readings.
Social Life5I never was involved in parties and whatnot, so I can't say much. I know other students were and seemed to enjoy them.
Placement Services7Mercer's reputation helped me with job placement, but I didn't engage with any formal job placement services. I know many other students went on to work for their community practicum sites.
Alumni Network9I haven't had much experience with the alumni support network. However, the services I have received have been useful (info about upcoming speakers, etc).
