Studying Social Work (completion in 2004)

"I feel as though my schooling and the professors who taught me gave me the tools to be a good social worker. I also have comprehensive training to work with several different populations, which has been an asset."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |

| Would Recommend? | yes | I believe overall I would recommend my school to anyone interested in Social Work. I'm not sure about the other programs on campus, but the facilities are nice and the cost is reasonable for a university. |
| Program Reputation | 8 | The professor who taught several of the classes I was in received a national award for her work as a Social Worker and more importantly as a human being. The program was chosen to partner with the Master's program in a different area of the state. |
| Program Quality | 7 | They are supportive of their staff and teamwork is important. At times the workload is so large it is hard to get all the work done in a day that needs to be. |
| Instruction | 8 | The schooling I received was the foundation for the skills I have now. You can not truly be prepared in a classroom, no matter how great your professor is, for the cases you will come in contact with in your line of work. |
| How Difficult | 8 | The program was difficult as you had to complete practicums in all levels of working with people (individuals, groups, organizations). There is such a broad scope that can be considered "social work" and there was so much to learn in such a short time. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | We went out to facilities and met the people we would one day be serving. We also spent significant time volunteering our time and doing internships prior to graduation. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 4 | Certain classes were offered at certain times of the year and at specific times of the day. There weren't multiple offerings and summer school was not offered. |
| Academic Facilities | 8 | They have made updates over the years to the facilities. The building that my department was in was well equipped for what we needed and classes that were in other buildings were accessible from where my program classes were. |
| Social Life | 8 | There was a close sense of community at school, and especially within your own program. I'm proud to be affiliated with the school system to this day. |
| Placement Services | 2 | No job placement assistance was given to me, and little help was given to those that weren't as fortunate to find employment following internships. I do think the help is there for some programs more than others. |
| Alumni Network | 2 | The most I hear from my alumni network is when they send out the annual newsletter of who graduated, died, had a kid, has a career, etc. The only other time besides that is when they want you to donate to alumni functions. |

"I am satisfied with my education. I wish it was more affordable."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | I don't feel it is my place to recommend higher education. You get into a school program that you are comfortable with. |
| Program Reputation | I have not researched their rating. | |
| Program Quality | 5 | I would say it was average, because no education program can prepare you for this work. I feel that this career requires more hands-on learning than school can teach you. |
| Instruction | 5 | This career is something you learn while doing. You cannot learn what you need to from college. |
| How Difficult | 3 | It was interesting coursework. I enjoyed all of the classes I took. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | It was a mix of both. You were required to do internships. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 9 | Classes were extremely flexible. |
| Academic Facilities | 8 | There was a vast amount of support. Teachers were available as well. |
| Social Life | I did not participate in school activities. They were offered. | |
| Placement Services | I did not access their employment services. | |
| Alumni Network | I don't know if there is an alumni network or support system in place. This is something I would have to check into. |
