Studying Criminal Justice (completion in 2010)

• 11/25/2011
"I received a good education and a degree that has helped me obtain my career of choice. I was also able to be involved in extracurricular activities pertaining to my area of study, because they were offered on campus."

| Would Recommend? | yes | The professors are very knowledgeable and well respected, they have a lot to offer and teach. There are many opportunities in this field if you are looking to stay in the area. |
| Program Reputation | 7 | I researched schools based on their reputations and found several sites that rated UNLV as a good place to study criminal justice. There are many opportunities in the Las Vegas area for social science majors, thus it attracts quality students and faculty. |
| Program Quality | 9 | UNLV has a great criminal justice program. The professors are knowledgeable and experienced in the field. Also, there are extracurricular activities available to students in the program. |
| Instruction | 9 | All of the professors have worked in the field of criminal justice. Most of them are very accomplished and well respected members of the criminal justice community. The curriculum is very relevant and hands on training is almost unavoidable. |
| How Difficult | 8 | Some of the upper-level classes in the program are time consuming because they require a good amount of outside participation. The majority of the classes' grades are based on test scores, so there is little in the way of homework. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | It was a mix of hands on and book learning. There were classes that required participation outside of the classroom. I attended court proceedings and was required to participate in studies conducted by the psychology department. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 8 | There are lots of evening and online classes provided. I myself worked full time during my junior and senior years and was able to maintain a full class load. |
| Academic Facilities | 6 | This is contrasted by the great library on campus at UNLV, and the poor availability of academic support. Some professors do not have on campus offices and are difficult to access. Academic advisors are not as helpful as one would hope. Study groups and tutors in the criminal justice program do not exist. |
| Social Life | 10 | I was involved in various social organizations, a sorority, and an honor society. The school also has a very loyal following for their basketball team. |
| Placement Services | 2 | During my time at the University I saw my counselor only once, and was not well informed. You are unlikely to receive help with job placement unless you personally develop a relationship with a professor and are offered an internship. |
| Alumni Network | 5 | Unless you were involved in a social organization during your time at the University, you are unlikely to have any further connection after graduation. Alumni functions are not well coordinated. |

Studying Social Work (completion in 1972)

"I am very satisfied with UNLV. I was also able to participate in the School of Social Work's graduate program and found it to be great as well. I am very proud of the school."

| Would Recommend? | yes | I would recommend the UNLV School of Social Work because of its dedication to the field. They understand that each student comes ready with the dedication to fulfill the goals of the school, of their lives and of their profession. |
| Program Reputation | 10 | The awards and certificates this school of social work attained show exactly how great it is. |
| Program Quality | 10 | I believe UNLV's School of Social Work very adequately trained me. I trained in administrative social work, so as to be able to demand and achieve esteem and respect for those families living in poverty. |
| Instruction | 10 | I was very fortunate to have trained under Dr. Harriet Shelton, who was an instrumental staff member under Roosevelt and John Kennedy when they were each president. |
| How Difficult | 9 | Dr. Shelton had high hopes. Hopes cannot be attained unless the highest levels and standards of education, ethics and training are maintained. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | I was assured that what I learned in the classroom had to be applied in the real world. This real-world training would prove invaluable. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 7 | Only so much flexibility can be allowed. |
| Academic Facilities | 8 | The library was very good. The access to information and technology was standard. The physical plant was OK. |
| Social Life | 10 | We all were dedicated to one goal and this bound us together. The friends I made at UNLV remain close as friends and as colleagues. |
| Placement Services | 8 | Only so much can be done. |
| Alumni Network | 7 | Due to limited funding, it is not as good as I would like. |
