"I think this is a great program to go through to learn about graphic design. They do not leave you hanging around if you are not fit to work within the environment. They never sugar coat anything. You know what you are good at and what you need to improve in."

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesYes. The instructors are demanding, but fair. They let you know that they believe in you and your work. I would suggest going directly into the program.
Program Reputation5I haven't heard national news about the program's popularity. Yet, in my hometown it is known as the premier art program in the south.
Program Quality7The University of Southern Mississippi's Graphic Communication program is excellent in its ability to squeeze the best work from its students. The program pushes you to your limits and beyond, while helping you figure out your niche in the Graphic Design industry.
Instruction8My instructors focused on preparing us to go into the design industry immediately. Their curriculum consisted of projects which simulated real life types of jobs.
How Difficult6In general I feel that graphic design is easy, as long as the designer has an eye for aesthetics and symmetry. This program was relatively hard in the sense that one would have to focus on design completely. There is no time for a social life or for working.
Hands-On vs. BookishIn my major we were exposed to a very hands on environment. Our teachers wanted us to become used to the business environment. We were treated like employees.
Schedule Flexibility4In the core classes there are many options for taking classes; it is extremely flexible. Within the graphic design program, the schedules are inflexible. You have to work everything else around the 2 hour studio classes, which are only taught on a certain day.
Academic Facilities8At my school, there are tons of resources. Tutors and computer resources are readily available and easily accessible.
Social Life4The school did not organize many parties or social situations. It is mainly up to the dormitory conductors and the student government association to gather people for parties.
Placement Services3I have attempted to use the school's career service assistance, but I was told to simply go online and search for work. They did offer mock interviews and resume reviews.
Alumni Network3There are not many support networks within the school. I have not been able to talk with any former students about their experiences through any school networks.
