Studying Licensed Practical Nurse (completion in 2009)

"I was not very satisfied with the nursing education I received. I would have liked more rotation experience and more hands-on work. It would have been nice to have lab stations that were permanent for practice throughout all the semesters."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | I would recommend if improvements were made. |
| Program Reputation | 7 | Our school actually has a good rating, however they are part of a larger network of schools that all get rated as a whole and not individually. |
| Program Quality | 6 | I feel that the program was very unorganized and could have done better with a more diverse learning program. It left me feeling a bit incompetent when first entering the work force. |
| Instruction | 5 | A lot of the study was simply done by reviewing powerpoint presentations and did not include a lot of hands-on work, and therefore it felt cheap and lazy in terms teaching techniques. I would have liked to have more on the job practice and more in depth classroom study. |
| How Difficult | 7 | The work was challenging, but only because it was new to me. It would have been equally as challenging with any other subject. The work load was heavy, as the course was only a few days a week. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | The first semester was very hands-on and it felt as though you were actually learning as you could touch, do, and question through trial and error. However, the second and third semesters were solely book learning aside from clinical rotations. The rotation experience was limited to what the facility nurse would allow you to do and how much time they were offering to spend with the student, which often times meant no time at all. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 7 | They offered a one year track that included a summer term, or a one and a half year track that included one full school term, with a summer off. |
| Academic Facilities | 8 | There was a well stocked library, plenty of computer resources, and great accessibility to professors. Tutors were not so readily available, but study groups could be formed at our own recommendations with classmates. |
| Social Life | 2 | The college is small so there are not a lot of activities, and the range in ages made it hard to have a great social experience. There were no athletics and only a few social events. The nursing students were not involved in many activities outside the nursing curriculum. |
| Placement Services | 2 | At the beginning of the first semester, we were told how we would be a part of a job fair where local hospitals would invite us and how it could lead to job placement. This never took place. No effort was made to help or assist in job placement at all. |
| Alumni Network | 5 | Although I have only been part of the alumni group for a few years, I do not feel that there is a strong network to keep in touch with former students. No one has contacted me to keep up with my location. |
