"I was impressed with the certified nurse assistant course that I took at this same college. The home health aide course was disappointing in comparison."

Would Recommend?noThe instructor was unprofessional and spent much of the class time discussing her personal life. The class is located in a strip mall away from the main campus.
Program Reputation10This school probably has the top program for home health aides in eastern Kansas.
Program Quality2The instructor told too many stories about her personal life and personal problems that did not at all relate to home health.
Instruction2The instructor was more focused on talking about her personal life than teaching the necessary skills for home health aides.
How Difficult1The book had large print text and many drawings.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe visited a home health aide and she spoke about her experiences. We did not have any real hands on training.
Schedule Flexibility10Day and evening classes were offered.
Academic Facilities3The school has a large campus for their two year degree programs. Certification programs, such as the home health aide program, hold classes in a strip mall located away from the main campus.
Social Life2Certification students do not mix with other students or attend activities on the main campus.
Placement Services10Job openings were posted on a board for students to view prior to program completion.
Alumni Network10The school aids alumni in finding employment.

Would Recommend?yesI would recommend my school to others. They are located in a convenient location, they have good, caring instructors, and they offer classes at convenient times.
Program Reputation9My school has a good reputation in my community. The community I live in has a lot of elderly folks needing care.
Program Quality9The instructors help us to understand why it is important for people to remain in their homes. They also teach us how to work with the things that are readily available.
Instruction9I felt that the instructors prepared us for the things we may encounter in the home.
How Difficult3I had already cared for an elderly family member in my home for many years before my training. I felt that my training emphasized what I already knew and taught me better ways to handle some situations.
Hands-On vs. BookishMy school does not offer any hands on training for the home health program. They do, though, offer clinicals for the CNA, LPN, and RN programs.
Schedule Flexibility10My school's flexibility is good. They offer night and summer classes.
Academic Facilities9My school's academic facilities and resources are very good. They have a large library and numerous media resources. They have a large science wing with labs.
Social Life5I am a non-traditional student so I do not participate in school functions. My school does have numerous sports teams.
Placement Services3My school does not provide job placement services.
Alumni Network5I do not participate in the alumni network at my school.

How Difficult7I really had to study. There was a lot of work.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt depends on the person. I liked the hands on learning I did get.
Schedule Flexibility5It is hard to work and go to school. I don't like the structure.
Academic Facilities7It is fairly updated. Some rooms are very very dated, though.
Social Life8I was very involved, but I had to work to get involved.
Placement Services5I really didn't like them. I am still interning.

Washburn Institute Of Technology • Topeka, KS
Studying HHA (Home Health Aide) And CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) (completion in 2009)

"I was very satisfied with my school. I loved the half book work, half clinical and hands-on mixture."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

Would Recommend?yesYes, I would recommend my school to others pursuing this career if they're truly interested in it because they have wonderful instructors. They also have a great class schedule, built around keeping your attention.
Program Reputation10Washburn Tech is known for having an excellent Nursing Program, from CNA to HHA to LPN. There is lots of hands-on training and it really helped me out with my confidence level when I passed my state exams and got employed.
Program Quality10I was very satisfied with my Technical Schooling because I had a terrific instructor. The hands-on training was the best learning experience I've ever had.
Instruction10The quality of instruction was excellent. The instructor made sure we were prepared for the State Exams. She really spent one-on-one time with all of her students.
How Difficult5My program of study was tough at times, the "learning by the book" parts. On the other hand, some things were pretty easy, considering my instructor's interesting teaching methods that kept my attention.
Hands-On vs. BookishHalf of the semester is in a classroom setting, where you do your book work. The other half of the semester is hands-on, when you go do your clinicals at a chosen Nursing Home.
Schedule Flexibility10They provide Full-Time classes Mon-Fri. They also provide Part-Time classes 2-3 times a week in the evenings during the week.
Academic Facilities3There are few facilities. However, the instructor I got was an excellent woman and spent all her free time helping us one-on-one.
Social Life1It'd be nice if we did, but there's absolutely no school spirit, no dances, no athletics. There's definitely no parties or social events, I think because it's a Technical School.
Placement Services3They say they have Job Placement, but what that really is, is an itty-bitty bulletin board in the hallway covered with all sorts of flyers for different jobs. They did not help me with any sort of Job Placement, which was a main reason I chose that school.
Alumni NetworkMy Home Health Aide class was a 4-day certification so I am not aware of any "Alumni Network."
