"The only fondness I have for the school is my academic adviser and my work-study job. It was a very difficult four years."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | no | I'd recommend attending a better priced school. Community college is a great option for your core curriculum. Or go to a bigger name school because if you're going to move, it helps to have a big name behind you. |
| Program Reputation | 8 | Again, we have a strong league of professors and many authors and poets have graduated from Barnard. |
| Program Quality | 6 | I enjoyed writing stories, and I had two great professors. However, I suffered through one professor who nearly undid me. Also, the degree didn't prepare me for a career. |
| Instruction | 7 | We had top rate tenure teachers, but again, it did not prepare me for a career. However, it strengthened my writing, which is important to me as I hope to continue writing outside of work. |
| How Difficult | 9 | The program had a portfolio for admission, and the work load was helpful in teaching me how to write for different professors. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | It depends on the subject, as biology and English learning is very different. There are labs, there are papers and there are always books. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 1 | No evening classes, no online courses. |
| Academic Facilities | 3 | We have one library, compared to how many at Columbia? Granted, we can go into Columbia's libraries, so if you consider that, we have great shared facilities. But their labs are better, their professors are better known, so why not just go there? Barnard is the back up to Columbia for women. |
| Social Life | 1 | Honestly, I didn't make an attempt to join anything. Students at Barnard had to just go across the street to Columbia. |
| Placement Services | 6 | There are a program for seniors that taught us skills, but the student has to take the initiative to attend the sessions and implement the lessons. The career development's website is also difficult to navigate. |
| Alumni Network | 2 | There aren't many alums, and honestly, few people outside of the New York City area know about Barnard. Thankfully, I can truthfully say I went to Columbia. |
