Rollins College • Winter Park, FL
Studying International Affairs (completion in 2001)

10/12/2011

"My understanding of the world was undoubtedly enhanced by attending Rollins College. I changed - for the better - as a person."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

Would Recommend?yesThe experience at Rollins is incomparable. If you want to expand your 'self,' go there.
Program Reputation8Rollins College is considered to be just outside the Ivy League. Its International Affairs Professors are not easily matched.
Program Quality10My professors were beyond comparison. My instructor in Asian Affairs drafted the security agreement between Southeast Asian nations in 1948.
Instruction10Keeping in mind the prior paragraph written, my experience at Rollins was extraordinary. My mentor was the editorial-page editor for the Orlando Sentinel, and had a successful column in more than 200 newspapers.
How Difficult8Too many students were passed, despite being sub-par. While those that cared extracted great value, the grading curve was too lenient at Rollins.
Hands-On vs. BookishI had old-school professors bent on demanding multiple sources for everything. Also, I had professors willing to make their points outside of the classroom...
Schedule Flexibility10I began as a day-student. Switching to evening classes - with the ability to take any classes - was very simple.
Academic Facilities10Numerous databases are available. Inter-library loans are quick and efficient.
Social Life10Winter Park is a fantastic community. Food, drink and clubs are numerous and close by.
Placement ServicesI have no experience with job-placement services. I never used them.
Alumni Network7I base my understanding of the Rollins' alumni network on attendance at various functions. I am not a member of the network, and thus cannot comment intelligently upon its effectiveness.

University Of South Florida • Tampa, FL
Studying General Business Administration (completion in 2004)

"I was satisfied enough to go back. There were things that I could have done differently to have had a different experience."

Would Recommend?yesI would recommend it because USF continues to grow and become a major college in the state of Florida. They keep getting major government funding for all types of programs there and the atmosphere in Tampa is awesome.
Program Reputation8It has been seven years and I believe it has grown and become much better. There are more opportunities for students there according to what I have read.
Program Quality8It was awesome! The professors were great, and the classes offered for nontraditional students were appropriate.
Instruction8The professors were very professional; they had great office hours. I would have liked to see more personal interest in the students, though.
How Difficult7We were challenged a lot, but it was easy to just ride the program. The hardest class there was the accounting course.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was more book learning than hands on. I only remember about one class that I took that was really very hands-on.
Schedule Flexibility9I was mainly an evening student and I never had a problem finding the courses that I needed to take. The hours were good.
Academic Facilities9Everything was excellent. They have an awesome library and awesome buildings; though they are a little old.
Social Life6I wasn't very active because of family commitments. There's not much interaction available for students that go there on the evenings.
Placement Services6Not good at all while I was there. It really did not help me do much.
Alumni Network7It really did not do much for me. I have not seen much support for those that graduate.

University Of Florida • Gainesville, FL
Studying Public Relations/Communications (completion in 1998)

11/28/2011

"The University of Florida is one of the best schools in the country, and I am always proud to say that I graduated from there. I felt very prepared entering the workforce, and I have relied on the knowledge I gained for years."

Would Recommend?yesUF is one of the best schools for communications, and I felt very prepared for my job upon graduation. The fact that UF has a reputation for excellence is also a wonderful reason to go there.
Program Reputation10The University of Florida has an excellent reputation as a Journalism and Communications school, and the marketing department is within that college. I have always been very proud that I graduated from UF.
Program Quality9I felt very prepared when I graduated UF. I remember thinking that when I started my first job in a marketing department at a local nonprofit, that I felt like I knew everything. Obviously, as I began working in the real world, I realized that I knew practically nothing and had lots to learn; however, I felt like the school taught me as much as possible without the real-life experiences that are necessary to become a real expert.
Instruction9My instructors were very personable and helped me with my career preparation in many ways. I had a journalism instructor who taught me more about the English language than any of my high school teachers. I had a PR instructor who helped me prepare press kits for job interviews. They were very supportive and helpful in preparing me for my future.
How Difficult6I wouldn't say it was easy, but it was definitely not an incredibly difficult area of study. Of course, I have always been more inclined toward writing and communications, so it would come easier to me than math or sciences, but in general, I felt the work was easier than some, but still challenging.
Hands-On vs. BookishI remember graphic design classes that were very hands on and creative. I also remember statistics classes that were very book oriented. So it was a nice mix, depending on the class.
Schedule Flexibility8I remember it being relatively flexible. I was able to arrange most of my classes around a convenient schedule and was able to sleep late most days, which was my priority back then.
Academic Facilities10I remember always having access to my teachers and TAs during their office hours. They always made themselves available. I also remember tutoring sessions available for an extra fee.
Social Life8The school had lots of social opportunities. I was actually sick during most of my time at UF, so I didn't participate in a lot of social events, parties, etc., but that was my choice. They were definitely prevalent.
Placement ServicesI didn't really use the career services at UF. My home is in Tampa, and I think I either didn't find they had a lot of contacts down here, or I just assumed that they didn't. It's been 13 years since I graduated, so I can't remember exactly why I didn't utilize that service much, but I know I didn't.
Alumni Network8While I receive info from the alumni association on a regular basis, I have made no effort to participate in the network. I have a busy life with my job, kids and husband, and don't have time for one more network. I know I probably should make time for that area, but my other professional organizations are all I can handle right now.
Review your current or past school and help others make better career decisions.
