"I appreciate my education from LSU, and it obviously worked well for me. Most of my friends own their own companies now, like I do, and I believe LSU helped us to achieve those goals."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | If someone were planning to stay in Louisiana for their education, LSU has the best program in the state. I wouldn't say they are the best in the nation, but best in the state. |
| Program Reputation | 5 | I wouldn't say LSU has either an outstanding or a poor reputation for its mass communications department. For me, it was the best for the money and it obviously worked out. Not the best, not the worst. |
| Program Quality | 5 | LSU's program was average, but dated. Professors were usually older having left the industry years prior. Newer professors were professional teachers, and did not have a lot of experience in the fields they were teaching in. |
| Instruction | 6 | Level of instruction was decent, but like I wrote earlier, dated. Older professors taught from what they knew back in the day. Newer professors taught off of theory, which could be fun, but proved less practical in real life. |
| How Difficult | 3 | Early classes are easy but require a flexible mind. Classes like AP style writing challenge you to forget the contemporary way of writing and learn the more ad/journalism friendly associated press style. Later classes are tough, but mostly because there is a lot of writing and campaigns. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | It's important to get a mix of book learning as well as hands on, since most classes deal with the theoretical side of the mass com field. Internships help A LOT later on as you will learn on the go rather than from a 5 year old book. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 8 | Classes were very flexible early on, allowing for pretty much any schedule. Later on scheduling becomes much more important - some classes are only allowed once per year, which makes scheduling to graduate difficult if you don't have a plan in place. |
| Academic Facilities | 8 | LSU has great resources for students. The library is fully stocked, computers are everywhere, there is a stocked green screen broadcast studio, radio studio, and print production studio as well as an offset and digital printshop. Great experience for the mass com field. |
| Social Life | 9 | No one can party like a Tiger. Great tailgating opportunities, lots of parties, active social groups, etc. |
| Placement Services | 7 | LSU has a decent career services department - I was able to get multiple internships in my field while in college, and also got a job with the university. My wife had equally as successful dealings. Now, LSU is offering help to bring graduates back to the state. I haven't used this help yet, but might in the future. |
| Alumni Network | 9 | LSU has a great alumni network - especially here in Texas. It's easy to find LSU professionals who are ready and willing to help graduates - especially on the LinkedIn Alumni page. |
