University Of Minnesota • Minneapolis, MN
Studying English Literature (completion in 2009)

"I loved attending UMN. The cost is the biggest disappointment. I put myself in substantial debt to get what I felt was mediocre."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI would recommend it because of my experiences at the university. I would not recommend it based on academics.
Program Reputation8The University of Minnesota is a well-known research institution. I am unsure where English Literature is ranked.
Program Quality7Curriculum was not overly stimulating. I felt challenged by assignments.
Instruction4I didn't feel the quality of instruction was anything special. I dislike when graduate students teach at the undergraduate level.
How Difficult8I often felt overwhelmed by the amount of reading I was required to do. I managed to graduate successfully, but there was considerable challenge.
Hands-On vs. BookishI felt that books were a large part of my college experience. I think it would be great if this was a program that became more hands on and innovative.
Schedule Flexibility7I felt I could attend classes around my schedule. I was able to maintain an internship and a part-time job while attending school.
Academic Facilities4The building that houses English classes is in very rough condition and not much funding is given to it. However, about a year after I graduated, the department was to be moved to another building that was completing renovations.
Social Life8Athletics at UMN really depend on the sport, but the fan base is great. Games are always packed and there is plenty to do on the weekends.
Placement Services5There is an office dedicated to helping you find jobs and internships while in school. I wasn't given any kind of contact information regarding who to contact for post-graduation job seeking.
Alumni Network5I know very little about my alumni network. Although they call for donations, they don't reach out frequently regarding other events.

Studying English (completion in 2006)

"I was fairly satisfied. I learned quite a bit and now have a job I enjoy."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI would recommend my school, but not the program I was in. I would recommend a more applicable major.
Program Reputation8The reputation is good. The graduate program is fellowship-based, so that is especially good.
Program Quality8I majored in English, so it wasn't directly applicable to marketing. It was a good literature program, however.
Instruction8The relevance was good for English, it wasn't so for marketing. The career preparation was rather poor.
How Difficult8I took honors classes, so it was challenging. The homework load wasn't too bad.
Hands-On vs. BookishI was an English major. So books were critical.
Schedule Flexibility4It was fairly inflexible. I ended up working mornings at 5 to make my classes.
Academic Facilities10They share space with all of the College of Liberal Arts. So the facilities are pretty good.
Social Life5I had pretty good social experiences. That said, I lived off-campus, so not as good as those who lived on campus.
Placement ServicesI didn't take advantage of it. So I can't really answer.
Alumni Network5They are OK. I like the English dept's communications. However I hate getting sales calls looking for donations.

Winona State University • Winona, MN
Studying Marketing (completion in 2005)

1/10/2012

"I really enjoyed Winona and what I learned there. I feel like I developed in my field of study."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesWinona is a small town that will let you concentrate on what's important. The culture there is very welcoming.
Program Reputation7Winona is more or less known for the nursing school. Marketing wasn't a huge aspect or community.
Program Quality7There wasn't a wide variety of classes, other than the basic marketing classes. I learned about the other facets of marketing through different associations.
Instruction8Winona had very good teachers. They were outgoing and had very good hands-on projects.
How Difficult7The workload was a lot the first two years. I feel like it dwindled a lot senior year.
Hands-On vs. BookishMarketing was more hands on. The other general ed classes were from the books.
Schedule Flexibility9Winona was an online campus; that means that we all had laptops and wireless internet.
Academic Facilities7Winona had a new library. They were continually expanding to include more facilities.
Social Life8The associations I was involved with helped with the experience. Sports teams at Winona were very good as well.
Placement Services6Our professors helped us out more than the career placement services. There were very few on-campus interviews.
Alumni Network5I only get e-mails requesting money. The associations I was involved in have greater alumni associations.

Minnesota State University Moorhead • Moorhead, MN
Studying Mass Communications (completion in 1995)

3/2/2012

"I enjoyed my college years. MSUM was a good fit for me at that time in my life."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI would recommend the marketing/mass communications major. It is very flexible and allows more creativity than a conventional business degree.
Program Reputation5I have met others who have gone through the program. It is not a program that the school is noted for. I believe it is underrated.
Program Quality6I think MSUM provided a decent foundation for my career. I still network and keep in contact with people I met in college. All are doing well in their respective fields.
Instruction5I feel that I learned a good deal about the basics of the industry. The curriculum was adequate, but not outstanding. Too many professors did not have adequate real-life job experience.
How Difficult3The subject matter was interesting. Since I enjoyed my education, this made me work harder, so I feel that it was easier.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe programs were more book oriented. I was able to have a nice mix of experiences and classes that were of benefit in my professional life.
Schedule Flexibility5Scheduling was flexible. I used a variety of options, as I worked full-time for half of my educational career.
Academic Facilities5We had adequate resources. It would have been nice to have had more real-life scenarios to work on.
Social Life7I enjoyed my time at college. We were active in the social aspects of the university. I didn't have much involvement in organized social events.
Placement ServicesI didn't have much experience with the job placement program. I do remember that I had a hard time finding intern placement. I did my own job seeking.
Alumni Network3I have very little contact with the alumni association. My wife went to a different university and her alumni association is much more active.

University Of Minnesota • Minneapolis, MN
Studying Business - Marketing (completion in 1994)

3/11/2012

"Loved my time at the U of M. It prepared me well for my field."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesIf you are creative, it is an excellent field to go into. If you like numbers, marketing is also a quality field. It has a little bit of everything.
Program Reputation10The University of Minnesota is the only Big 10 school in town. And the town is a major fortune 500 hub. There is an advisory board of business persons that advise the school on direction to focus education.
Program Quality8I graduated in 1994 and I am well versed in marketing. However, I have no classroom training in internet marketing, just 12 years experience.
Instruction7Great professors that had real world experience. The major could have gone deeper into practical experience for marketing.
How Difficult8Extremely difficult to get acceptance into the business school. The professors held you to that admissions standard throughout your degree.
Hands-On vs. BookishLots of group projects. Lots of research projects. But there were classes that opted for student choice - come up with a project or follow the text book. I liked the choice.
Schedule Flexibility9The school has traditional day time courses. I also took correspondence and night classes as needed.
Academic Facilities9The U of M is a cutting edge research facility. The computer labs were plentiful. The professors wrote the text books you used. They incorporated outside learning experiences as a regular part of the coursework.
Social Life9Love Gopher hockey! Loved the workout facility. Loved all of the hidden learning resource centers and study areas.
Placement Services9Lots of on campus recruiting. Lots of resume and interview preparation. Lots of help in activities and internships to help you create a resume prior to the job search ever beginning.
Alumni Network8The first 10 years the alumni network just kept track of you. Now they ask for money. But they do try to keep you connected with campus.

Bethel University • Minneapolis, MN
Studying Marketing (completion in 2009)

3/23/2012

"I really did enjoy the teachers because they really did care about you and took a genuine interest in your well being. The campus was beautiful and always made you feel like you were in a very special place full of learning."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThey provide a great and effective marketing program with dedicated teachers that really do care about you. The campus is inspiring and each time you are there you will want to come back.
Program Reputation7The school is one of the best business schools in the nation. If you live in Minnesota and you mention Bethel as where you went to school, EVERYONE knows where you went and respects you or hates your family for being able to put you there.
Program Quality7I did not complete my schooling as I had dropped to start my own marketing firm. I enjoyed it and went for 3.5 years.
Instruction8They were very thorough with great examples to complete at every turn. The homework was engaging and very close to real life.
How Difficult8It was difficult and full of writing and expressing your view of products, people, and other campaigns. The events were in locations that were real working marketing businesses and campaigns that made learning very real.
Hands-On vs. BookishHands on more than the books, but they definitely had lots of humanities reading to do. We spent a lot of time in the field and creating campaigns than we did reading about how to create them.
Schedule Flexibility7You have some leniency as far as coming to class as long as your work is complete and you are actively participating as often as you can. They work with you if you have sports or anything else that gets in the way.
Academic Facilities6Very good facilities that were clean and up to date, including a basketball court, frisbee golf course, and a great pond to paddle on too. They didn't have a pool, but they did have a work out room.
Social Life5I was engaged during my time in college. I had about 2-3 friends and really became quite anti-social until I broke up with my fiance and by then I was nearly done in 2009.
Placement ServicesNever had any interaction with them as I left and started my own firm and have been doing that since then.
Alumni Network4haven't heard anything from them yet. I found they have events and things but they are not pro-active in finding people.
