Studying Communications (completion in 2007)

"I enjoyed my school and feel I was well prepared to achieve my career goals when I graduated. Individual professors were helpful in recommending places of work more so than career services."

Would Recommend?yesThe professors in this department have high standards for themselves because many still work at events and in movie production, etc on their own. They are keeping up to date in their skills and have the resources and are still in touch with fully functional media outlets to know what is going to prepare students for when they graduate.
Program Reputation8There have been some new professors added and the ones who are still there carry a good reputation. The professors in this program will not let students learn old programs; they are going to make sure what they are teaching is cutting edge.
Program Quality9The communications department was well equipped with the latest software and computers. Many professors had real life experience, so they were able to teach with that experience in mind.
Instruction9I was given the opportunity to learn the Adobe software while working as the page designer for the university's newspaper. This helped me gain experience using my new skills in an area very close to a true professional environment. It also helped me to accept critical reviews as so many people saw the paper and had their own opinions (good and bad) floating around campus.
How Difficult8I had several major projects to do throughout my academic career. Being in communications, my main professor required that almost all of the media and work we compiled in our projects be done by the student. This included photographs, video recordings, page layout, graphics, and articles written. It helped us to be well rounded in our abilities.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere was rarely a lesson in which we only read information on accomplishing certain tasks relating to our classes. I believe Comm. Law was the main book learning class, and most other classes we were taught through hands on methods. This included taking class time to practice photo taking, step by step directions on graphic design tasks, etc.
Schedule Flexibility10Gardner-Webb offers day and evening classes on several campuses throughout NC. They are flexible with the kinds of students they have (full-time, part-time, adult, just out of high school, etc.).
Academic Facilities9The professors and advisors are available and always willing to help and talk to students. Resources are as cutting edge as possible.
Social Life7When I was at the university, most students left to go home on the weekends. It's a smaller school and many students lived within a few hours. The school has built up more school spirit and made the campus more exciting since I was there.
Placement Services2Current students can have resumes looked at and can take tests to learn what jobs best fit them. However, job placement assistance was minimal.
Alumni Network3Emails, post cards, and magazines are mailed out. However, getting help to find a job just after graduating was very minimal from the alumni and career services center.

Studying Mass Communications (completion in 2010)

"I would recommend NCCU to any and everyone. Every school has flaws, but no school has an overall program that caters to students the way NCCU does!"

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

Would Recommend?yesNCCU's English and Mass Communications program is filled with influential and dynamic professors, students, and staff. Everyone, including the professors, is eager to learn and teach!
Program Reputation5If I did not get recommended by a friend, I would not have known of NCCU's program. The program's reputation is not negative at all, it just isn't known.
Program Quality10The professors had years of experience and education that gave students insightful advice. The courses were very hands-on and applicable to my field.
Instruction9Students were prepared through practicum courses and independent studies outside of class. Students also were challenged and strongly encouraged to complete internships during the semester and in the summer.
How Difficult7Although the courses were challenging, we had all the resources we needed to be successful. A course would only be difficult if a student did not use the resources available.
Hands-On vs. BookishMost of the work in my program was hands on. We learned how to video shoot, write articles, edit footage, and interact collectively without learning solely from the book.
Schedule Flexibility10Classes are offered mornings, afternoons, and nights in many disciplines. Classes are also offered during the summer and with various professors.
Academic Facilities8There are enough facilities and resources available for the amount of students NCCU has. Professors are eager and willing to assist students with help outside of class as well.
Social Life9I was involved in many academic and extracurricular activities including several honor societies, modeling groups, and dance teams. Students would often have social gatherings, interest meetings, and events on campus, too.
Placement Services4I did all of my own career placement work. NCCU offers career services, but no one promotes that service. I found out about it the semester I graduated.
Alumni Network3Our alumni are supportive in terms of event participation, but not financially. Our school needs more alumni who are willing to contribute finances or time to better our programs and campus.

Studying Associate In Arts (completion in 2005)

2/25/2012

"Not a bad place for someone just getting out of high school, looking to transfer in the near future. Great stepping stone for a larger university."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noI would be very reluctant to tell others they could get the position I have with an Associate in Arts degree. I would suggest a university.
Program Reputation5An Associate in Arts is a very general degree. I would not say one local college had a better one than others.
Program Quality6Very helpful and resourceful staff. The reputation of the college is not as good as others.
Instruction5Most of what I learned pertained to my current job. They taught how to deal directly with the public.
How Difficult6Program was not too difficult. The average person who studies would have no problem.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was mostly book studies. Very few classes were hands on; mostly trade classes.
Schedule Flexibility8Classes were extremely flexible in working around my work schedule. My counselor was awesome and always got me what I needed.
Academic Facilities6We had all that we really needed. My only recommendation would be to have more computers with internet access at our facility.
Social Life5Not the biggest place for school pride. A lot of us hung out together outside of school for group studies and whatnot, but that's about it.
Placement ServicesI was not involved with school job placement. I found this position on my own.
Alumni Network8Very good alumni network. Would rate it higher than more local community colleges.
