Student/Alumnus Reviews of Schools for This Career and State

Sort Reviews By:

University Of Houston • Houston, TX
Studying Communications (completion in 2010)

"Loved the school for the fact that it was a cheap state school with low tuition. Hated the school for the long commute."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

Would Recommend?maybeDepends on if they need a Combs degree. In retrospect, I should have chosen something else and I'm currently contemplating going back for an engineering degree.
Program Reputation5Not really aware of reputation for this program at our school. I'd imagine it's just as average as earning this degree from another school.
Program Quality5Nothing stellar to say the least. Average communications program with average professors
Instruction6Professors were somewhat engaging and personable. Aside from that, nothing out of the ordinary (at least in my department).
How Difficult3Communications is mostly theory based on how to effectively communicate in settings such as business. This has helped me in my career.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere's a few bits of hands on experience but it's largely theory based in a book. There are a few internships though.
Schedule Flexibility10I could schedule my classes around the time that's most preferable to me. Very easy and manageable to my working schedule.
Academic Facilities5Communications grads really have nothing aside from the excellent library. But I would say, that's about it.
Social Life10A lot of friends were made during my time there. I still keep in touch with them post graduation.
Placement Services3Almost nonexistent. Job finding is contingent upon checking an online job board provided by the university.
Alumni Network1Nonexistent for some degree programs. No alumni network that I know of for Comm grads.

Central Texas College • Gatesville, TX
Studying Business (completion in 2009)

"I learned what I needed to learn and I got my degree."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

Would Recommend?noThis was not by choice. It was just my only option to grow my education.
Program Quality5It was ok, the only choice I had.
Instruction3It was very slow paced. I could have used something a little harder.
How Difficult1It was set up for just about anyone to pass. I did learn, though.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere was no hands on at all - you would only use books.
Schedule Flexibility1I had to take the classes at the times allotted. I had no choices.
Academic Facilities1We had to use our own resources. None were offered.
Social Life1You could not speak with other students. Go to class and leave.
Placement Services1There is not one. It is totally up to you.
Alumni Network1There really was not one.

University Of North Texas • Denton, TX
Studying English/Professional Writing (completion in 2005)

"I enjoyed every part of my graduate training. There is very little that I would change about the program and my experience."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI would recommend UNT, with a couple of caveats. I would suggest adding more business courses to the curriculum, and I would encourage the students to actively seek out business opportunities in the market while they are working on their academic degree.
Program Reputation6University of North Texas offered one of the first PhD programs in technical and professional writing. Since then, other schools have added those programs.
Program Quality5The training I received was more academic than practical. If I had to do it over again, I would have added more general business courses to my schedule.
Instruction8The instructors I had were knowledgeable and encouraging. However, because they were more focused in academia, I had to search for jobs on my own.
How Difficult9The training was extremely valuable, but it was also academically rigorous. More of it than I thought has been applicable to my work.
Hands-On vs. BookishI wish there had been more opportunities to work in industry. We were very grounded in theory.
Schedule Flexibility10I had to commute from out of state during part of my graduate career. The instructors were extremely supportive and flexible with my schedule and travel time.
Academic Facilities7The computer lab needed updating when I was there in 2005. It could have improved since then.
Social Life8The organized events were not strong. However, I have maintained personal relationships with a large number of faculty and fellow students.
Placement ServicesI'm sure they were fine. However, I did not utilize the services, as I did not work in Denton.
Alumni NetworkThere is an active alumni network. However, I have not used it as much as I should have.

Texas A&M University • College Station, TX
Studying Marketing (completion in 2001)

2/27/2012

"I got a good education and it is a respected degree in the workplace."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeIt would highly depend on what area of marketing they were interested in and if their personality made them a good fit for it. It takes many different kinds of people to make a good marketing program work.
Program Reputation8I'm not sure about the current rating of A&M's business school, but they had a vision of being a top 20 school by 2020.
Program Quality7I don't feel like I've used much from my education to help in real-world scenarios.
Instruction9My teachers were all formerly professionals and were passionate about the topics.
How Difficult8Some classes were challenging. Others were more of a fun and collaborative learning environment.
Hands-On vs. BookishI had classes where we used a textbook, some with computer simulations, and others that relied solely on articles.
Schedule FlexibilityI am not familiar with their current class availability.
Academic Facilities6A&M consistently has top resources available to their students. Marketing students often got the short end of the stick as compared to retail or finance majors, but the resources were good nonetheless.
Social Life9A&M is quite well known for their spirit of camaraderie and organized social groups. I was an active part of many of these.
Placement Services2Upon graduation, I was made a low offer, but ended up taking it. I graduated and relocated to the new city, but my new company ended up laying off a round of people, including me, prior to my start date.
Alumni Network4There are job resources from the Aggie Network, but those have failed to materialize for me. The Aggie Network doesn't really contact alumni, except to solicit donations.
