Studying Communications (completion in 2007)

"I loved the experience. I'm happy with my degree. It's not the most prestigious and it doesn't always open doors, but it does enough."

Would Recommend?yesIt worked for me. I loved the experience and the results. Even though I started in PR, it was a good preparation for my career in marketing.
Program Reputation9It's always ranked very well. They've won several national titles. They're generally on the cutting edge.
Program Quality8It's a solid program that does well in general. However, I now do much more with online/digital than I learned there.
Instruction8I had good preparation for a PR career. I ended up moving more into marketing.
How Difficult8There were impressively large projects, and the news writing classes were almost overwhelming. However, most of the time, I didn't feel much over my head.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe always had textbooks. There were also lots of practicums and labs.
Schedule Flexibility8I always had classes when I wanted them. I had a fairly normal schedule, though.
Academic Facilities10I always had access to computers and software. I even was able to work on a variety of decent-profile multimedia projects.
Social Life10I went to school at 17 and always found friends. I fully enjoyed the social experience.
Placement Services7I found three internships through the school. I haven't found anything through them since.
Alumni Network9There's a strong program with a magazine, emails, and social media accounts. Alumni look out for each other. However, I haven't had a huge involvement in the organization.

"I love WSU. It is a great atmosphere. There is always something to do. The technical sales program is unique and empowering."

Would Recommend?yesI would recommend the technical sales program to anyone pursuing a career in sales and marketing. You will feel that what you're being taught are principles that will prepare you for leadership in your career.
Program Reputation7Overall, I think the reputation of the program was positive. It is one of very few programs like this in the country.
Program Quality8Weber State is a smaller university. The technical sales program is excellent for sales and marketing training. You're given a lot of real-life assignments that prepare you for the real world.
Instruction8The professors in the technical sales department at Weber State University teach timeless lessons. They haven't spent their lives in academia, so they have very relevant curriculum coming from their work experience.
How Difficult3The program never felt really difficult. In my opinion, it seemed easy because the assignments seemed to be relevant to real life.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe assignments were much more hands on. The curriculum was relevant to the real business world.
Schedule Flexibility10The program is very flexible. Nearly every class is available online.
Academic Facilities8The professors' doors are always open. The facilities and resources provided by WSU are very accommodating. There are locations in the surrounding cities and towns for easy access to libraries, computer labs and testing centers.
Social Life8There is a lot to be involved in at WSU. Also, with the school being smaller, you have a lot more leadership opportunities. There are always parties and activities. The university is minutes away from all kinds of outdoor fun, including ski resorts, hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, etc.
Placement Services9The technical sales program has one of the highest job placement percentages at WSU. The students are getting jobs in sales and marketing all around the country.
Alumni Network9The alumni network at WSU is awesome! They were willing to assist all of us students in networking with the right people at the companies we wanted to work for.

Studying Finance (completion in 2006)

3/14/2012

"I learned a lot and enjoyed every minute at school. I made some lifetime friends that I very much cherish and would definitely recommend it."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

Would Recommend?yesEven for someone not pursuing the finance field, there is so much information you can use for the rest of your life. The work ethic it takes to complete college also gives you a great jump start in life.
Program Reputation7It is a smaller commuter college. It is more well known for its accounting graduates.
Program Quality7In my junior year, the head of the finance department died and it was kind of makeshift people filling in until they found a replacement, which unfortunately was after I graduated.
Instruction9The material we covered was good. I use the investing portion of my education every day.
How Difficult5Math always came easy to me, so crunching the numbers was easy for me. I thought the entrepreneurial classes were challenging and the most enjoyable.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe actually had investing competitions with a made up online game throughout the semester that traded with real time prices on the market. Some friends and I also were enrolled in an entrepreneurial program that actually awarded $250,000 to five students to start their own business.
Schedule Flexibility10Because it's a commuter college, the online classes and night classes that are available make it very convenient. That was one of the greatest aspects of my school.
Academic Facilities8Classes always had space, over 20 computer labs, and a dozen trading centers.
Social Life4There are no dorms at the college. Everyone travels to school so other than going to the games, there wasn't much social life other than hanging out with your personal friends.
Placement Services5I don't think it us just the school. I think the finance field is difficult to find a good job at a high level right out of college unless you're interested in selling insurance and annuities.
Alumni Network3I was rarely able to contact any alumni. I still contact personal friends of mine that I studied with.

Westminster College • Salt Lake City, UT
Studying MBA (completion in 2009)

3/10/2012

"I think it was good for the price and grew my abilities. I have a good marketing job with freedom, so I am happy. I would suggest others to try as well."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI think it is worthwhile if you have already have a job in the marketing field and want to grow to a higher position. I also think it is worthwhile if you are motivated and know which position you are trying to achieve after graduation. If you are just using this to have a higher educational title, it might not prove a return on investment.
Program Reputation7The reputation within the region is good. The school works with local businesses to focus the education on real world business needs. When searching outside the intermountain region, the school is often unheard of.
Program Quality7I think my MBA overall was helpful to validate me when searching for a job internationally. I, however, do not feel it taught me much in the practical marketing areas. But I do think it prepared me for practical higher level thinking.
Instruction8My program was real world business driven so the teaching was focused on practical work skills which I needed in a competitive work force. I think the technical skills taught could have been a bit more intensive.
How Difficult5It was challenging at times, but as it was focused on practical work areas, it was easy to use real world examples. I think USA schools often inflate grades as the program was not based on a curve. I think they could have challenged us more as it was a graduate degree.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was very hands on and practical. We also spent a lot of time working in groups as one would in businesses as projects are assembled in parts and multiple people and departments are involved.
Schedule Flexibility9Most classes were offered at night, even though it was a standard MBA and not an executive MBA program. The program was built for working professionals, so it was flexible and well designed for hectic schedules. Teachers were also aware of the strains put on students and were flexible as well.
Academic Facilities10The facilities were excellent. Nice classrooms, and we had an active stock ticker and trading room for Finance focused MBA's. Group support and accessibility of professors was excellent.
Social Life5As it was a more commuter based school and program, there was not a lot of extracurricular involvement. We did take a mandatory international MBA business trip which was excellent to represent the university.
Placement Services4I met with the job placement counselors on one occasion, but I felt they were not helpful for MBA students. Jobs with this degree often need to be found from networking in school or through career events.
Alumni Network3I think they are not truly focused on helping students graduating to find jobs as most students were already employed and getting an MBA to supplement the education. Since I have graduated I have not been active in Alumni and they have not pushed it too much.
