Studying Communications (completion in 2008)

• 10/18/2011
"While I do think that there are things that can be improved, overall UWM is a great school. I am lucky to have gone there and am happy it is on my resume."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | My recommendation would depend on the type of student. If the student would be a teaching assistant, this is a great program. However, if the student was working in the real world, I would have to qualify my recommendation. |
| Program Reputation | 5 | UWM is known around Milwaukee as being research focused - which is a positive and one of the reasons I chose the school. However, it is not known for its academic rigor. |
| Program Quality | 5 | The communications program was aimed at students who went straight from undergraduate to graduate degrees. For students who had real world experience and/or who were currently working, the program did not have the support needed to work with and for those students |
| Instruction | 9 | The professors are amazing. Their fields of study are vast and they all are very concerned with making sure their students learn. |
| How Difficult | 7 | For me, the difficulty did not lie in the curriculum, but rather in figuring out ways to work with students who did not work outside of the program. The classes were challenging but not overly hard. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | Most of the communications program is based on getting you familiar with the theories of communication. However, great care is taken to make sure you also get the hands on research experience you need. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 9 | The majority of classes in this program are at nights and/or online. However, because it is a small program, classes are only offered in 2 year cycles so if you miss a required class, you have to wait a long time to take it. |
| Academic Facilities | 8 | The professors were always accessible. Other physical resources were outdated and old. |
| Social Life | 5 | I was a commuter and did not participate in many university sponsored social events. However, those in the program were always social. |
| Placement Services | I did not use the job placement or career services. I cannot comment on them. | |
| Alumni Network | 1 | I never met an alum in the 3 years I was at the program. Professors talked about alumni and things they went off to do, but I didn't see any personally. |
