Studying Medical Office Technology (completion in 2011)

"I was extremely satisfied with my school and enjoyed it a lot better than my vocational college experience for Massage Therapy. Vocational College is mostly hands-on material while a Community College mixes both textbook and experience."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | yes | My school is one of the best schools in the state of Mississippi, and has many career choices to choose from. The teachers are incredible and work easily with you to make sure you understand the material being taught to you. |
| Program Reputation | 10 | Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College has a good rating when it comes to their Business/Medical Departments. I noticed a lot of students were enrolled in the Medical Office Technology program because this is a very popular career. |
| Program Quality | 10 | Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College has an excellent Business and Medical Department. The lessons I learned were very hands-on, and you got a dose of what kind of cases you would handle if you were in the workforce in a medical office. |
| Instruction | 10 | I received some of the best instruction because the teachers would incorporate their work experience into their lessons and teachings. They taught you things from a real life standpoint as opposed to a textbook standpoint, which I think prepared me more for my career. |
| How Difficult | 7 | I would give this a 7 on level of difficulty because it was a little higher than average. Medical classes came easily to me because I excel in medical sciences, but computerized accounting and dealing with Quickbooks software made things more difficult. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | Half of my learning consisted of book learning to make sure I understood the material. As you got closer to finishing your degree, classes were more hands-on to prepare you for working in an office setting. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 10 | My school has one of the best schedules when it comes to planning classes. You could take morning, afternoon, and evening classes whenever you were able to, and also over the summer, so you didn't have to have a full schedule of classes. You could take as little as one class at a time or as many as six. Online classes were very convenient because you could work at your own pace as long as you met deadline requirements. |
| Academic Facilities | 10 | The library was available in the morning, afternoon, and evening, which made it easily accessible for people who had night classes. The school had its own after school building and learning lab for those who needed extra help and tutoring, and you could meet with your adviser whenever you needed to. |
| Social Life | 4 | The social experience was a little lower than average because it wasn't a dormitory school. The college has 3 branches located at various cities on the coast. One is a dormitory school - the one in Perkinston, MS. The Perkinston campus was a social campus. |
| Placement Services | 5 | I would give this an average rating for two reasons. One of the reason is that a lot of teachers had outside connections to many local businesses when it came to job placement, but many were only recommended if they were highly skilled students. |
| Alumni Network | 5 | I rate this as average because most of the instructors were there when you needed them, and others were a little more difficult to work with because a few taught more than one class/subject. So the ratio of support is 50/50 because some are busier than others. |
