Studying Computer Hardware/Software Technology (completion in 2007)

"I loved going there and the general atmosphere and experience were great. Sometimes I miss it and wish I could go back."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | I would probably recommend a school with a better concentration in the IT field. However, if it is the only option, I would still say it was a good school choice. |
| Program Reputation | 6 | Not a lot of people know about the program. However, the ones that do are very impressed by it. |
| Program Quality | 6 | The program has a lot of benefits and offers a lot of practice for the students, as there's a lab with plenty of computer equipment to tear apart and put together. However, if it wasn't for my internship following graduation, I wouldn't have gained as much experience as I did. |
| Instruction | 8 | My instructor was very well-educated and took a personal interest in making sure each student succeeded. He also recently obtained the A+ certification that most of us (students) were striving for. |
| How Difficult | 7 | The workload wasn't hard, as much of the written component involved simple worksheets. The majority of work we did was hands on and this was the most rewarding and important work. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | We usually only skimmed through the book to get the basic knowledge. Then we moved into the IT lab where we got to tear down and rebuild computers and see how everything worked. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 3 | Everything was laid out a certain way, and you had to work your schedule around theirs. There wasn't much flexibility at all. |
| Academic Facilities | 7 | The computers accessible were excellent. There were also plenty of great instructors in the IT field, but they could be difficult to get a hold of. |
| Social Life | 7 | Everyone in my graduating class were people I had gone to school with since middle school or elementary school, so the social experience was excellent. Everyone got along and there was always plenty to do as far as fun activities went. |
| Placement Services | 8 | There was always an updated list of available jobs in the student center. However, not all of these were relevant to the field I was trying to go into. |
| Alumni Network | 4 | Most people didn't keep in touch after graduation. Also, few alums stayed in the area to network with. |

Studying Information Technology (completion in 2011)

"WKU is a great college to attend, be it online or on campus. Being able to attend school and work full-time was great. Also the tuition wasn't that bad either."

| Would Recommend? | yes | I would definitely recommend WKU to others wanting to obtain a degree in Information Technology. Not only is it nice to know that you can do it all online at home but they also have a great school campus. |
| Program Reputation | 8 | Western isn't as widely know for their IT department as well as some of the up-scale schools. It worked out amazingly for me though. |
| Program Quality | 9 | Going to school at WKU was great. After receiving my Associate's at the local community college I was able to transfer leaving me with only 2 semesters to go. Also I never once had to go to the campus as it was all online. |
| Instruction | 8 | Most of my classes were taught online with just a Cisco book and labsims. I didn't have much interaction with the professors. Though when a problem arose it was really easy to get feedback. |
| How Difficult | 3 | My program of study wasn't that difficult for me. I have a big niche for computers. I'd say the hardest thing for me to learn was sub-netting. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | My classes all contained labsims, which I consider to be very hands on. I would read a chapter then do 3 or 4 labsims. Which made me understand the material more. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 10 | Given that my classes were all online I had great flexibility. I could go to school in my pajamas if I so desired. |
| Academic Facilities | 10 | I had easy access to all online resources. Also my professors were easy to contact via email or cell phone. |
| Social Life | 1 | I didn't ever have to go to the campus, so I'm not really sure how my social experience would have been. |
| Placement Services | 5 | WKU did not help me with job placement. I was lucky enough t have family who worked for school systems, and was easily placed into the IT department. |
| Alumni Network | 5 | I don't really know anything about the alumni network, other than getting a monthly newsletter. |
Murray State University • Murray, KY
Studying History (completion in 2000)

"I graduated. They took care to make sure I could graduate."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | I'm not quite sure how good the networking program is, but I know many people in the IT department on other parts of campus that are using it for their masters program. |
| Program Reputation | 5 | It has a doctoral program, but it's not very popular. I think it still draws a large crowd though, so that is good. |
| Program Quality | 5 | It's a small university. I liked the program but it felt very restrictive. |
| Instruction | 10 | All the professors were very helpful during my last semester. I was able to take those skills on the job hunt, even though my field of study isn't my field of work. |
| How Difficult | 5 | The professors are stretched pretty thin here. They have to keep a lot of the study very generalized because of this, giving average difficulty. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | There is a good mix of both. There are still plenty of book classes, but I feel the university is moving more toward technology. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 8 | They just started offering a whole other online term. It's nice that there are a lot of full programs that are offered online as well. |
| Academic Facilities | 10 | I now work for the university's library. It's a great resource and I work daily to make sure that network wise and technology wise it's the greatest it can be. |
| Social Life | 5 | I didn't live on campus so I think that affects my score. I made some friends in classes, but I didn't do the party thing. |
| Placement Services | 10 | The job placement department at my school is amazing. They found me many different opportunities after school. They even promote inner departmental job information. |
| Alumni Network | 5 | I think it's annoying. I get e-mails all the time asking me to donate money. |
