Denver Paralegal Institute • Denver, CO
Studying Law (completion in 1990)

"I wish that I would have had more of an opportunity to get a good job in the field. More mentoring would have been nice as well. Even with the internship there was very little learning."

Would Recommend?noI would not recommend this field to anyone because of the fact that anyone can be a paralegal with no education.
Program Reputation7At the time the reputation of the school was great. As a matter of fact, I was recommended by a judge to attend this school.
Program Quality4The school had lawyers that taught the classes and they were willing to go out of the way to help us. The only problem I had was that there were not enough job opportunities for all of us.
InstructionMore than 5 years agoI attended the paralegal institute in 1990. The school is no longer there, or perhaps the name of the school has changed. I am not sure, but I do think the school is no longer there.
How Difficult8The program was very difficult because you had to know a lot of the legal language, real estate, divorce, rates, how to do legal research, etc.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was a very good mix of everything. There was always hands on learning because of the types of positions we were going for. There was also a lot of book learning.
Schedule Flexibility6The schedule was flexible because at that time everyone had their B.A. or B.S. and had families and jobs.
Academic Facilities8The school was pretty new and had resources like a library, computer lab, and ample classroom space. You had access to many of the professors, albeit within a limited time frame.
Social Life2There were no social events, parties, or athletics. This was only a paralegal program for adults who already had outside interests.
Placement Services1There were few job placement services. We were all asked to do internships at the same courthouse, but none of us received a full time job there.
Alumni Network1There was at the time very limited alumni networking and support. From my class I only kept up with two individuals: one male and one female.

"Colorado was a great school! I loved my classes and my professors. However, it was not focused on legal support."

Would Recommend?maybeI believe any school can help students prepare to be good law clerks. I would not recommend a criminal justice type major - I feel like reading-heavy majors are good for this type of career.
Program Reputation10Colorado is a top school as far as large state schools go. I feel like the University of Colorado has opened many doors for me.
Program Quality10The University of Colorado has one of the best Spanish programs in the area. I was challenged and supported by my instructors.
Instruction8My major is not directly related to my current job. However, I use my Spanish background very often in my job. I speak on the phone to possible customers in spanish.
How Difficult7I read many books in Spanish and wrote many papers completely in Spanish. This was challenging, but I felt supported and prepared.
Hands-On vs. BookishI was in a language and literature program. I spoke much spanish, but also read many books.
Schedule Flexibility10I was able to take classes at the time that worked best for me. This was the morning, which left me with the afternoons to study.
Academic Facilities5Colorado's library is beautiful and well stocked. There was one academic advisor for our whole program, and she was more focused on what she thought would work for her than on what would work for me personally.
Social Life10Colorado has a great deal of planned programming. The school has a huge sense of spirit and there are always plenty of parties to attend.
Placement Services5I only met with Career Services once. When I did, most of the time was devoted to criticizing my handshake.
Alumni Network8I have not taken advantage of the alumni network. I receive information from them, and they do seem quite involved.
