Studying Kinesiology (completion in 2008)

"Overall my experience at U of I was a very positive one. The classwork was challenging but not overly so and the social scene was a lot of fun. I have an acceptable job that I wouldn't have without it."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | yes | If anyone wants to get involved in physical or occupational therapy or athletic training, I would definitely recommend the U of I kinesiology program. It provides a very superior credential that will get you noticed in the industry. Just be prepared to hunt down opportunities with little support from the administration. |
| Program Reputation | 8 | The U of I kinesiology program is held in high regard. It is a somewhat unusual field of study, and as such there aren't a ton of good programs around here for it. U of I tops the short list of competent kinesiology programs. |
| Program Quality | 8 | The U of I kinesiology program was a very good one. There was no skimping on the workload; we were thoroughly taught all aspects of the profession in regards to the physiology and psychology that comes into play. |
| Instruction | 8 | U of I is notorious as a research school first and foremost with educational techniques given less of an emphasis. However, the kinesiology program didn't seem to follow this trend. The classes weren't too big (no giant lectures), and the professors I worked with were attentive to the students' needs. |
| How Difficult | 7 | The academic material was not overwhelming at first; as a freshmen I found my courses to be quite easy. However, over the course of the next few years I did encounter some very challenging physiology and anatomy courses. The work was never overwhelming though. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | My program was very hands on. Yes, there was a good amount of reading to be done, but 9 out of 10 of my classes had a lab component where we would apply the concepts we were learning about. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 8 | The class flexibility was quite good. There were a couple of core classes that had to be taken at very specific times, but other than that it was pretty much wide open as to how I wanted to schedule my classes every semester. |
| Academic Facilities | 7 | The facilities were good. There were several different labs and one full-size library for my major. |
| Social Life | 8 | U of I can be pretty crazy. The students there study hard, but they definitely party hard during the weekends. It is very easy to go out and about and forget about coursework on a Saturday night. |
| Placement Services | 5 | I wasn't too impressed with the U of I job placement program, at least not in my field. I have heard that their business school does this very effectively, but for the most part I felt like I was on my own with this. |
| Alumni Network | 3 | I have tried to reach out to other alumni, but have not had much success. I have heard that the school has the biggest alumni body in the country, but maybe since I took a fairly low populated major I haven't found a ton of people to network with that went through the same system. |
