Would Recommend?yesI would strongly recommend my school. I think a journalism degree is extremely desirable by PR firms.
Program Reputation10As mentioned above, when I travel and am asked about my background, I almost always get a "wow, isn't Mizzou's J-School no. 1 in the country?" When I was a student, the reaction on campus was similar - other majors always acknowledged the J-School's strong reputation.
Program Quality10It's consistently touted as the top journalism school in the country and people I've met throughout my career recognize that. My degree from MU continues to open doors for me professionally. The journalism school is dedicated to improving and evolving its training for the jobs of the future.
Instruction9From seasoned ad execs to Pulitzer Prize winning reporters, my professors brought amazing life experiences into the classroom. The curriculum included a final semester called a capstone that required us to develop a campaign working with a real client.
How Difficult10The school requires a liberal arts background. I had to take a foreign language, courses from the business school, etc. Many of the courses required intensive team projects as well as hours of study.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe school takes pride in its hands-on and real-world approach. The broadcast students work for a real TV station owned by the school. The print students work for a real newspaper also run by the school. The ad students do capstones for real clients.
Schedule Flexibility10I took all kinds of courses. A night course, a summer abroad program, an online class, a weekend course, etc. It was great!
Academic Facilities7The facilities were getting a bit run down. I've recently been back to the school and have been blown away by the new facilities.
Social Life10I had a great social experience as I was very involved in the athletic department -- I was a student athlete and I mentored other student athletes. The D1 atmosphere is awesome. As far as parties, night life, and community involvement goes, Columbia is a great community.
Placement Services10The career services department provided excellent support in helping me prepare my entry level resume and portfolio. Between my junior and senior years, I landed an internship (thanks to the school's "J Day" career fair) at a top agency. Upon graduation, that agency offered me my first job. In addition, my capstone client (mentioned above) also offered me a job upon graduation.
Alumni Network10We call it the Mizzou Mafia. The support from fellow J-School alum is amazing. I've benefited from as well as contributed to the network. The online forum used to be a simple board, but now, with social media tools like LinkedIn, the network has become even stronger.
