"I'm giving it an average rating because I was unsatisfied with the business school and so after a few years, I switched majors and was very satisfied. I took courses in other schools and through them learned about branding, pitching, creative thinking, analytical thinking, influencing people, etc."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | no | I think I've already made my point clear. Actually, I think you have to have the right personality type to be a great publicist. I think if you have a compelling, charismatic personality, it works in your favor. If you can cold pitch people all day long without giving it a second thought (which many people cannot), you're in good shape. I think you could have all kinds of training but if you're not a natural and people don't respond to you, you won't be effective. |
| Program Reputation | 5 | I'm putting average as I would have no way of knowing. Though I don't think the school has changed much--it was always known for its football team and as a great engineering school, which makes sense for an oil and gas state. |
| Program Quality | 1 | Even when I took a graduate level course I found they didn't a) teach me anything I didn't already know, and b) didn't teach me the things I could most use as a small business owner (small business accounting/profit-loss vs macroeconomics and common sense stuff, for example). |
| Instruction | 1 | Their curriculum was not aimed at small businesses, but at working at large corporations. Their art school actually was far more useful in gaining tools for use in branding. |
| How Difficult | 1 | I always had a very easy time in school all of my life as an honor's student, so this isn't really an indicator of the degree of difficulty, more that all studies are easy for me. Their curriculum for business and communications was just not well thought through. But it was in Oklahoma, where I would say there is less media presence than in most places. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | ||
| Schedule Flexibility | 10 | I was able to manage my company and a full time class load due to early morning and evening classes, which was fantastic. They couldn't have been more flexible. |
| Academic Facilities | 10 | This, I can say, was stellar. We had 24/7 lab access. Our professors were always there for us, as were the academic advisors. They had plenty of computers for students, but I had my own. Massive libraries had long hours. |
| Social Life | 1 | I had no interest in my school. I organized tons of my own culture events and had plenty of spirit in that area of socialization. |
| Placement Services | 5 | Tough to rate because I had my own business already as a freshman in college and so I never used any career assistance services. I do know that my brothers, who had engineering and business degrees, both got jobs through on campus recruiters. |
| Alumni Network | 5 | I'm not a good barometer, as I have no involvement with my former university and don't accept their alumni mail. I do not participate and I am not interested. I am only interested in my career, not in OU. |
