College Of Charleston • Charleston, SC
Studying Corporate Communications (completion in 1995)

10/16/2011

"If it had not been for my school, I would not have the job I have today. I do anticipate a promotion in the future. For now, I will continue to work for my district and continue to follow its vision and mission. I understand that regardless of my personal feelings, I must publicly represent my district in a positive manner."

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThe location is great. The campus is peaceful. There is very little crime in the area. However, housing can be limited and expensive.
Program Reputation8The program has improved. Many previous students suggested more hands on experience. There are now companies who will take interns from the program. Many of the companies have also agreed to sponsor a few of the students for various reasons and activities.
Program Quality8I loved the program because it gave me opportunities to meet a lot of people at different companies. I also liked the program because most of my professors were from the business sector.
Instruction7The program was fairly new, so I worked really hard. Most of the classes were fairly easy and required one to "save face" a lot. The curriculum even covered news media.
How Difficult5It was not difficult at all. However, the workload was heavy. Because we had to participate in many visits to various places, it was time consuming. I think more than anything, I hated all the writing--memos, letter, campaigns, signs, briefs, etc.
Hands-On vs. BookishMost of the learning was from the "book." Even though we had a significant number of "working" trips, as students we were not allowed to really work on the scenes. We were able, however, to work on various campaigns and activities that the school sponsored. I would have loved to have been able to stand in front of a company's camera and see myself on the "big screen."
Schedule Flexibility8There are now evening classes, online classes, and even weekend courses available. The college also has satellite campuses across the city. I took most of my classes during the day because I needed to work part time while I was attending school.
Academic Facilities10The new library has state of the art facilities and equipment. There are extra classrooms and labs. Students even have rooms for quiet-time and social-time. Amazing! There are academic advisors on-campus and online. The college advises all students to take advantage of the college's writing and math labs.
Social Life3There were not a lot of activities for a poor (economically) African American student in the early to late 1990s. I did join a sorority but not until my very last semester. I spent my time working to pay tuition and studying to pass my classes. Many of the parties were restricted for one reason or another, but there were activities that the college sponsored. There were also various clubs. I always tried to attend the Cougar's basketball games, however. We never had a football team.
Placement Services4It was difficult when I graduated because the program was fairly new to the local area and the state in general. Finding a job was difficult because employers would ask, "What exactly did you study in that major?" At times it was very frustrating. A friend told me recently that the major is now more recognizable.
Alumni Network6It could be better. The college just sent out an alumni survey last week. The college's magazine has improved a lot. The alumni network system even sponsors trips to various places so that alumni can come together, keep in touch, and network.
