Studying Fashion Merchandising (completion in 2011)

7/25/2011

"I loved my school. Even though my program maybe wasn't the best, I value the experience."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeIf attending my school for fashion, you have to come into the program with high interest and some knowledge of the industry. You also need to be willing to learn on your own. The professors will teach, but they expect you to already know certain aspects.
Program Reputation5My school has an excellent reputation, though not necessarily for the Fashion Merchandising program. Many people do not know we have a program until they visit the school or check the website.
Program Quality7My school lacks many of the resources needed for a successful fashion program. However, the professors did their best.
Instruction10Instruction was excellent. My professors were trained fashion professionals, thus providing students with quality instruction.
How Difficult5Some classes had a heavier workload than others, including design and merchandising classes. Fashion history classes were easier.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe had a good mixture of both. We were often lectured in class one week, then told to take the next week to go through hands-on learning, and we were asked to be prepared to report back the following week.
Schedule Flexibility4Not many options were available. There were very few weekend and evening classes available. Online courses were available for some courses, and although summer offerings were available, they were noted to be very expensive, at over $1900 per course.
Academic Facilities1Little was available to those enrolled in the fashion program. We did not have media specifically for fashion available to us. Also, professors were not as accessible as they should have been.
Social Life10Although our school had problems, school spirit was always excellent. We also had many social events planned for us throughout the semester.
Placement Services3Job placement was only helpful if you networked with alumni and professors. Even then, there was always an issue with favoritism.
Alumni Network10I am constantly in contact with alumni who graduated from my program. I also plan to speak to fashion classes about life after graduation next semester.
