"I was very satisfied with my education. I would highly recommend the school to anyone who desires a career in computer science."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThe school itself was a great school to attend. It was not too large of a campus and classes were small.
Program Reputation7I do not know my school's rating as per the program I took; however, I would give them a high rating as I have done very well in this school.
Program Quality8The teachers were very knowledgeable and there was a great deal of hands on training. I enjoyed the small class size.
Instruction8The instructors were very knowledgeable about the topics they taught. We were able to put PCs together and we were not rushed in doing so. We were allowed plenty of class discussion time as well.
How Difficult7There were some areas of study that were challenging. As a result of my own experiences before attending college, I had knowledge of how to put computers together and of the general concepts of computer science.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere were plenty of written materials combined with plenty of hands on experience. Again, there are ample opportunities to build PCs, work with software, etc.
Schedule Flexibility7I don't know a whole lot about evening, weekend, or online studies as it pertains to this day and age, as I graduated some years ago.
Academic Facilities9The library does facilitate computers for students to work on. There are also additional computer rooms available to students. Classes are small which is good for students who need additional help.
Social Life6I did not attend many social events at my school as I was primarily focused on my training. However, there were many extracurricular activities for students to participate in.
Placement Services7As noted previously, the job placement and career services placement of the school is very good. They help in locating part time jobs in your area of study.
Alumni Network7They have an excellent staff in the guidance office. They are always willing to assist in locating volunteer service in your chosen field. They assist in finding part time jobs in your chosen field as well.

Coppin State University • Baltimore, MD
Studying Management And Finance (completion in 1994)

"I was very satisfied with the education I received at Coppin State University. It was a great learning experience and I had a lot of fun while there. I made many friends with whom I am still in contact with to this day. I do not hesitate when called upon from the alumni association for funding. I am a Coppin State Alumnus and proud of it!"

Would Recommend?yesYes, I would recommend Coppin to others wishing to pursue a management degree. I have recommended others to Coppin in pursuit of other degrees as well. I feel I received a great education and I think everyone who attends will enjoy his or her experience at Coppin State University.
Program Reputation9I am not sure how the Management program's reputation is today. As far as I know there are students still enrolled in the program and a majority of graduates go on to do amazing things upon completion of the program. I do know there are some great leaders who have completed the management program and are in public service in our state.
Program Quality10My school provided me with an excellent education that prepared me for my entry into the field of management. I feel the instructors and courses gave me with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in this field of study.
InstructionMore than 5 years agoN/A
How Difficult10The program was difficult but manageable. I worked full-time and attended school full-time at night. The courses were challenging and interested. The program was designed to help students be successful in their efforts of completing their studies.
Hands-On vs. BookishThis is the one quality that I loved about this university. We did not just go strictly by the book. There were projects and demonstrations to back up what we learned in the lectures. We participated in projects that required us to use our minds and hands.
Schedule Flexibility10The class schedules were extremely flexible and the ability to completing was not overly difficult. The school offered other options if classes was not available, such as independent studies.
Academic Facilities10I had no problem accessing any academic facilities at the school. These services were readily available for any student who wished to access them. Every individual, from the president of the school to the deans and professors, played a part in the success of each student's academic goals. There was always someone to give you a helping hand. They really thought of each student as an individual and not as a number.
Social Life10I attended some functions at the university when I wasn't working. There were plenty of activities going on that every student could take part in.
Placement Services1When I graduated 17 years ago, the job placement and career services were not much help in finding jobs for students. I believe the job placement rate has increased since my attendance, however.
Alumni Network10The school's alumni give a lot of support to the school. Even today the alumni is active in assisting the school in fundraisers and in promoting progress the success of the students.

St. Mary's College Of Maryland • St. Mary's City, MD
Studying Philosophy (completion in 2007)

11/7/2011

"Everyone remembers school more fondly when they've left, and perhaps I do the same. But I feel like I got a worthy education just as much as I felt it when I was there. I *knew* it was quality at the time, having attended other institutions and understanding where they were lacking. I'd be extremely satisfied if they better-connected our major program to job searching or advised earlier concentrations that would lead to the development of more useful career-orientated skills; however, the school is small and it encourages self-reliance in all things, from studying to learning to socializing."

Would Recommend?yesI would recommended SMCM without hesitation for those wanting to study philosophy, but for those interested in being a sales manager, I would suggest economics, political science, or the psychology programs at SMCM. Although the philosophy program provided me with particular insights that have guided and strengthened my managing skills and salesmanship, my disinterest in the business numbers aspect of things often leaves me a little behind others in connecting real-time numbers to sales behaviors. My success has been due to creating strong salespeople who develop genuine passion, letting them know what results are expected and pushing them to use the techniques that get those results.
Program Reputation7SMCM's philosophy & religious studies department have a great reputation amongst the philosophy community, but only to the extent of those who know about it. In other words, SMCM itself is mostly unheard of outside of the MD/DC/VA area, but for those who do know of it, they consider it very highly against other known schools, particularly their philosophy programs. The broad range of topics and concentrations to be studied make the difference, from what I've witnessed.
Program Quality9Having discussed Philosophy programs at other schools with other degree holders, I am pleased that my program encouraged self-study and focused on reading primary texts. It provided me with opportunities to take on the original presentation of the ideas and create my own thread of analysis. Other schools seem to lack an emphasis on primary source reading.
Instruction6Although I learned a lot and the quality of the curricula made learning enjoyable and easy, I do not feel that SMCM prepared me for a career or even for the pursuit of particular occupations that used my degree and/or skills honed from earning that degree. The professors were very knowledgeable about their topics, however, and were always willing to answer further questions.
How Difficult8The classes and papers were quite challenging, but they were only difficult to the extent that they required me to focus on what I thought and how to justify it. The workload seemed excessive at first, but as one found oneself being consistently challenged to improve and expound, the workload became easier.
Hands-On vs. BookishMy particular program of philosophy is very book oriented there, but it does so out of necessity, to get the most out of the experience. Rather than reading other's interpretations of a paraphrase of some philosopher's ideas, the students read the original texts, examining even translation discrepancies and various contexts, in order to glean meaning from what is written. This encourages the students to come to their own conclusions, rather than accept what has been concluded by others.
Schedule Flexibility8There are minimal weekend classes, no online courses, and summer offerings only in the form of study abroad programs. Evening classes only start as late as 6pm (but last 3-4 hours). Since the campus is only 4% commuter, the students are already on campus, available for classes, so there is no need for such flexibility as online classes or special weekend courses. The only commuters are, really, the professors.
Academic Facilities8The library is extremely large (size-wise) and plentiful (book quantity-wise) compared to similarly sized institutions. The availability and content of other media (microfiche, DVDs, software, online resources, etc.) also make the school "larger" than it seems. The labs are state of the art, thanks to the recent construction of a new hall for the Chemistry and Biology depts. The professors, who also act as advisors, are very accessible, maintaining long office hours and also offering tutoring and leading study groups as necessary.
Social Life10Since the campus is isolated from any sort of suburb or city, and even the "town" itself is a 20-minute drive, the school maintains many social programs and clubs actively on campus, has numerous organized events and parties, and greatly encourages student attendance at home sporting events. Many students frequently wear gear to show their spirit, whether or not they are involved in athletics.
Placement Services2What SMCM has in instructional proficiency, it lacks in career placement and assistance. Although such a program exists, it does so only mostly as a recommendation service for career types common with a particular major, not anything so active as in a realistic job search motivated by actual interest in the graduate. More often than not, SMCM uses it to promote its master's program in elementary education and suggests students get into it in order to apply their bachelor's degree.
Alumni Network5I participate minimally with the alumni network. I occasionally visit with other alumni who are also friends at alumni-related events, but I do not pursue any active role with the alumni association.

Would Recommend?yesUMBC is a great school for technology. UMBC has good faculty and good facilities. UMBC is also well recognized in the area.
Program Reputation9We are very well known in the local area. UMBC has been rated #1 among up and coming schools.
Program Quality9It was a great school that offered a great education from great professors. I also liked the living conditions.
Instruction9We had very good professors, who were very knowledgeable. We also had a good curriculum that allowed for flexibility.
How Difficult10Computer engineering was very difficult. It required a lot of math, computer science, and electrical engineering.
Hands-On vs. BookishDepending on the subject, we had both hands-on and book learning. Many classes required a lab course that is separate from the class. This ensured that we learned both the theories and also had hands-on experience.
Schedule Flexibility9I really liked our schedule flexibility. I was able to choose a schedule that fit my personal style and also complete my major.
Academic Facilities8UMBC is a newer school. Most facilities are new. We have good dorms and good labs. However, computer engineering is a newer major, so our access to labs are limited.
Social Life7I joined a sorority in school which allowed me to have a great social life. However, our school spirit is not so high.
Placement Services10We had a great career service center, with on campus interviews and career fairs. During my job seeking period, career services helped me prepare for my interviews and writing my resume.
Alumni NetworkI do not participate in alumni network events. I do not feel qualified to answer this question.
