Hibbing Community College • Hibbing, MN
Studying Business Management (completion in 2004)

"I would definitely say I was satisfied with everything. The school was great and I'd go back and further my education if I ever decided to move back to Minnesota."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI would definitely say this school is a good place for people looking for a small town environment and a good education. This would also be a good choice for those not interested in spending a fortune for an education.
Program Reputation5It's as good as any community college could be. It has a pretty good reputation.
Program Quality5I'm not a fan of going to school, but I was able to complete my degree and get a decent job pretty quickly. I would return and complete schooling there, because it was easy to go there, inexpensive, and I have family still in the area.
InstructionMore than 5 years agoI went to school there longer than 5 years ago. This question wasn't relevant to me.
How Difficult2
Hands-On vs. BookishThe teachers are great and had been teaching for a long time. They didn't rely too heavily on books and related everything to real life experiences.
Schedule Flexibility7The school has great flexibility. All classes were offered online or on-campus and there were weekend and summer classes available as well.
Academic Facilities5It had a number of great resources that were relevant to my studies. The facilities were well maintained, also.
Social Life7Growing up in this town, it was very easy to stay in the social loop. This was a place in which everyone knew everyone and we all got along well.
Placement Services3Being in a small town, they lack in this area. There are few jobs in the area, and mostly only in the mines.
Alumni Network2It is a small town, so there's not a whole lot of alumni in the area.

Minnesota School Of Business • Rochester, MN
Studying B.S. In Business/Retail Management (completion in 2007)

7/6/2011

"I would say that my experience at MSB was overall a positive one. I wasn't involved in any athletics or school groups, but I did enjoy my program and my instructors."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesIf you live in the Rochester area, then I would recommend MSB to you because it is convenient and well recognized in the area. Also, I am sure you will enjoy the ambience that MSB provides.
Program Reputation8Most people who attend MSB for their B.S. in Business Management are successful at completing the program. Generally, this is due to the high drive that most people have who pursue this career.
Program Quality5I gave them an average rating because the program was sufficient. However, the class scheduling was not very convenient. I had to take only night classes on certain days where day classes were not offered. This was sort of inconvenient.
Instruction7I rated it a seven because I got along with my instructor and enjoyed her style of teaching. I did feel that some of the information that was presented to us was repetitive though.
How Difficult5I chose an average rating because some of the information seemed repetitive and the tests were simple. I did feel that there were some unnecessary projects, which is to be expected in such a course.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe did a lot of learning by the book. There were times when we would role play, but most of it was bookwork.
Schedule Flexibility1They only offer night classes for a lot of the courses. This is good for some people, but for me, it was horrible. It cut into a lot of sleep time because I had to get up at 5 a.m. for my job.
Academic Facilities10MSB has up-to-date software and their library has great reference books. I spent lots of time studying at their library. I never attended focus groups, but they were offered. This is why I feel they deserve a high rating in this category.
Social Life10MSB always advertised their school spirit and events. They encouraged student participation as well as faculty participation.
Placement Services10I give them a high rating because MSB helps their students get jobs in the field that they study in. They gave us class time to apply for positions and this was actually a requirement for my class.
Alumni Network10The Minnesota School of Business has a nice alumni network for past students. They hold ceremonies to recognize their alumni proudly. They even include past staff in these ceremonies which is why I feel they deserve a high rating.

Concordia College • Moorhead, MN
Studying Spanish Education (completion in 2007)

7/8/2011

"I went to a Lutheran school and I am not lutheran, so it was different that everything was based on a religion I was not. Other than that, the learning was great."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeI know that students now have to study aboard if they want to get a degree in Spanish. I think this is great because some people were not fluent when they graduated. The education aspect was great.
Program Reputation6During my student teaching I was around students from other universities. They seemed to be very fluent in Spanish and they knew more on how to really teach Spanish and grammar.
Program Quality7I feel like I did not get enough education on Spanish grammar to help me teach students. But I had some great classes on how to teach Spanish in the elementary school.
Instruction8I had one professor that did a great job preparing me to teach in a full immersion classroom using story lines. Most of my professors were very smart and were native speakers.
How Difficult8The material was easy for me. The hard part was education because we had to make lesson plans and new materials. We were pretty much starting from scratch.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe did a lot of partner activities. For Spanish, we needed to participate in conversations with native speakers. We would have to do presentations. In some classes, like economics, we would have to spend more time in the books.
Schedule Flexibility3There were no online or weekend classes. I did have a night class and that was only because I was in the classroom during the day.
Academic Facilities7I was a tutor for the the tutoring center so I know they did a great job. Professors were great about being in their offices during their office times. I talked to my advisor every once in awhile when I needed help. The library was a bit outdated but had a lot of information.
Social Life6My school was OK for the social aspect. I was part of a sorority so I made a lot of friends at my college and at other universities in the area. We did philanthropy, social nights, and girls nights. I did not participate much in the sports aspect.
Placement Services9I went to the career center many times to have them help me find careers and resume help. After graduating I would still get emails of different career openings in Education.
Alumni Network5I get invited once in a while to events. Since I live very far from my school, I don't get invited to many things anymore. I know the career center is still there if I ever need support.

Bemidji State University • Bemidji, MN
Studying Business Administration (completion in )

"For going to school online, I think this was a good program. You learned the material on your own, but had the instructors help. If you cannot learn on your own or keep a schedule, I would not recommend it."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeI would tell them that this is a very time consuming program and if you could not dedicate the time, you may want to consider something else. It takes a very independent person to to this program online.
Program Reputation7I have not heard anything good or bad about this program. I am rating it based on what I would tell someone else about it.
Program Quality7I think that it is great to be able to do your schooling online, which worked very well with my schedule. They don't prepare you for getting a job in this field, however. You need several years of experience to obtain a job or find a position that will allow you to work your way up without experience.
Instruction8I learned a lot from the courses I took, but it is all irrelevant without on the job experience. it is nearly impossible to get a job without experience.
How Difficult7The overall material was fairly easy. The work was time consuming, though, because the workload was heavy.
Hands-On vs. BookishI had no hands-on learning; it was all book learning. I had to learn the material on my own.
Schedule Flexibility9Extremely flexible. There are online and traditional courses as well as combinations of the two styles. There are classes available to fit any schedule.
Academic Facilities5I was not in the school and did not use these facilities. However, I did use the online library system.
Social Life5The school had several events throughout the year; however, I did not attend because I lived over 3 hours away. They did post invitations online for everyone to see.
Placement Services7I don't think this area is that great. Many jobs that are offered are in the school area or they are internships in which you do not get paid. For those of us that need money, we cannot waste our time and money providing daycare for a job that does not pay.
Alumni Network5I don't think the school goes above and beyond in this area. I have not received anything from the school since I graduated. I have to contact the school.

Saint Cloud State University • Saint Cloud, MN
Studying Business Management (completion in 2005)

"Overall, SCSU was great to me. It was my own fault for taking 5 years to graduate but I am glad I took the 5 years because I feel it actually gave me a better education. Not sure if I regret not living on campus for the whole time."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI believe SCSU educates their students to be ready for real world business situations. A college can never teach someone everything they need to know, but they give you the resources and knowledge to be prepared for any situation.
Program Reputation8At the time, we had one of the top business schools in the midwest. People go to SCSU for usually one of 3 programs; business, education, or partying!
Program Quality8SCSU has an excellent business school. I feel I am much more prepared for everyday decision making as opposed to just being 'book smart.'
Instruction7Some professor were amazing and some were not. Seemed like the 'non-standard' professors were the best. By 'non-standard,' I mean professors whose careers are not in teaching but come for real business careers to teach.
How Difficult9SCSU's business school gives you a very full work load. To graduate in 4 years, you have to work really hard. That is why I went for 5 years.
Hands-On vs. BookishMost classes were all book learning. Maybe it was different for other programs but it seemed like business classes almost had to be taught out of a book, by a presentation, etc.
Schedule Flexibility9SCSU offered evening, summer and online options. I do not recall them offering weekend courses, however they might. I really enjoyed night and online classes as they allowed me to work a decent job during the day.
Academic Facilities8They had a top of the line library built my freshman year. You could always find a computer in one of the computer labs and studying was extremely nice and comfortable in the library. Advisors and professors were accessible but I did not take advantage of tutors.
Social Life6I only lived on campus for one year. There seemed to be organized events and parties all the time, but I was more into going off campus and hanging out. Going to football and hockey games was always fun.
Placement Services5I know they offered job placement, however I did not take advantage of it. I had a pretty good line on a job so I took it on my own.
Alumni Network9We had a lot of lectures from alumni in management positions, HR, sales, etc. Many of the professors were alumni coming back to teach what they learned after years in business.

Bethel University • Arden Hills, MN
Studying Business (completion in 2009)

12/20/2011

"It was okay, but I wish I had made more friends. I wish people also weren't so aggressively Christian."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesYes, I would recommend it, but you should have a scholarship to make it work. You also should be a Christian to fit in.
Program Reputation5People don't really know Bethel for having any strong degrees or academic reputation. As a business major, though, it's known in the local business community.
Program Quality5I think that Bethel was a little too Christian for me. I used to be a Christian and I was under a lot of pressure to convert back.
Instruction7The instructors really cared about you. It was a lot more personal than a larger state school.
How Difficult3It was very easy, because there wasn't a lot of math involved. I was able to pass all of the tests easily, because I studied and got to know my professors well.
Hands-On vs. BookishMost of the learning came from textbooks and theory. We never left campus to go get hands-on experiences out in local businesses.
Schedule Flexibility7There were classes that happened over the summer that I attended. I was also able to switch classes at least three times, when my campus job hours changed.
Academic Facilities8The library was always well stocked. The campus was well kept and the insides of buildings were never messy.
Social Life3There weren't many parties or social gatherings. I wish that people were more comfortable reaching out from their social groups, but after freshman year, groups of friends wouldn't change.
Placement Services4They didn't really have much support; the only real thing I found valuable was a newsletter. They always had staff there during weekly business hours, so it was a little useful.
Alumni Network5It's decent around southern and central Minnesota, and the metro area. However, outside of Minnesota, it's unknown.
