Student/Alumnus Reviews of Schools for This Career and State

University Of Phoenix • Maryland Heights, MO
Studying Business Administration (completion in 2008)

7/14/2011

"I was extremely satisfied with the school. I received my degree around the time the University became accepted as legitimate by employers. The school certainly did not hurt me in finding employment."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThere is absolutely nothing wrong with this university. I would recommend it to anyone wanting an education above the community college level, especially since it doesn't carry the outrageous costs of similar universities. The business programs were very up to date and relevant to today's business world and it was refreshing to learn from them.
Program Reputation7Contrary to those who believe the school is simply an online educational provider, they do have brick and mortar schools all over the country. They do adhere to government educational requirements and offer a curriculum comparable to other universities.
Program Quality8The school itself focused on business in a manner that was applicable to today's environment. Many schools focus on theories of how business should be or were run in the past, but it doesn't pertain to the real world today.
Instruction9The curriculum was spot on and I have used much of what I learned as far as accounting, reporting, and general communication skills are concerned. The instructors were hands on and many were available via chat sessions in the evening if required.
How Difficult7The work load was heavy at times and could be difficult to keep up with. The other courses also required quite a few assignments to be completed during the week as well as team based assignments.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere really wasn't anything outside of team assignments in which each individual focused on a certain area of a business and between the group accomplished a task. While that is hands on, there were no internship-type opportunities available. Overall, it was mainly book work.
Schedule Flexibility10They were certainly flexible, offering day, evening and online classes. You were, for the most part, allowed to work on your schedule.
Academic Facilities7Accessibility to instructors was always good. The school itself was a smaller facility, but offered everything we required. The location of the facility was the reason for my rating as the particular road it is located on was a nightmare to navigate.
Social Life2I was older when I went back to college. The lack of social experience was my choosing and did not pertain to any issues with the school itself. I just didn't desire to attend social events with a much younger crowd.
Placement Services5This rating is based on my time at the school. Most opportunities were offered by smaller to mid range companies at job fairs on campus. Connections through alumni seemed to be the most successful way to use the tools from the facility to gain employment if you chose to go that route.
Alumni Network5The school itself had some websites that allowed you to connect with others in a manner similar to the social networking sites we have today. It was easy to contact others for support through the UofP alumni Network.

"Excellent teachers and great sports. I made a lot of good friends."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesGood place to make friends and build skills.
Program Reputation8The school is recognized in the whole state.
Program Quality7
Instruction7Very knowledgeable instructors gave great feedback on papers.
How Difficult5Courses were very fluid and concepts were easy to pick up.
Hands-On vs. Bookish
Schedule Flexibility6Very flexible schedule that was easy to work around. It was easy to take part in outside activities and still complete school work.
Academic Facilities8Excellent, large library that always had tutors available.
Social Life10Great school spirit. Excellent athletics program that gets the whole school involved.
Placement Services2They did not have a career services department. They had a counselor but he didn't give good direction.
Alumni Network5They send out mailers once a month and try to keep grads involved.

Fontbonne University • Clayton, MO
Studying Organizational Studies (completion in 2004)

10/23/2011

"Was glad I went. Wish I would have picked a different area of study."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeDepends on the area of study. There are others I'd recommend before Fontbonne.
Program Reputation5Their reputation doesn't seem to hinder enrollment. My suspicion is they focus on the diversity crowd who obtain funding through gov't means.
Program Quality2The degree program was very generic in scope. It didn't offer some aspects of the curriculum originally stated in the program outline.
Instruction5Not impressed with the majority of instructors. Most were not engaging or well trained in their own fields of study.
How Difficult5Nothing earth shattering here. The typical testing format, writing papers, etc.
Hands-On vs. BookishNot a hands-on oriented program. No issues here.
Schedule Flexibility9Can't complain about this. Two nights a week in the evenings worked well with my work schedule.
Academic Facilities7Pretty decent resources. Staff was always helpful in finding what you need.
Social Life4Didn't participate much in the social aspect. Work, home life, and school - no time for social events.
Placement Services1This was most disappointing from a mid-career level person going back to school. The career services are geared strictly for the younger crowd.
Alumni Network5Most events centered around diversity issues. I'm ok with diversity to some degree but this school jams it down your throat.

"The school was relatively expensive for the degree I received. If I could do it over, I probably would have gone somewhere cheaper."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeThis school is expensive for what it has to offer. I would recommend shopping around first, and if this school is in your price range, I think you should consider it.
Program Reputation5Good school with a high percentage of graduates. Good for part-time students.
Program Quality5This school will get you the degree. Has decent job placement program, but nothing to get excited about when seen on a resume.
Instruction6Instruction was fine. The professors did their jobs to the measure that they were required to do; nothing more.
How Difficult3Not too difficult. Schedule was flexible and I was able to maintain a full-time job while taking classes.
Hands-On vs. BookishThis is a very book type of school. Most is actually done online. None of the courses were hands on.
Schedule Flexibility10I was able to work full-time and still get my degree in a respectable amount of time.
Academic Facilities5Everything was nice, roomy, and well cared for. Classrooms had plenty of space for the students.
Social Life3Not much school spirit. No athletic teams or events. Nobody really has school clothing.
Placement Services5I have a job, so I can't complain. I feel like a lot of the work is on you to get the job, though.
Alumni Network2I don't know any alumni, other than the ones I went to school with. There really is not much of a network at all.
Review your current or past school and help others make better career decisions.
