Studying Hospitality (completion in 2005)

• 7/7/2011
"I enjoyed my time there, but wish it was more geared towards my degree. It's a very nice school, though."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | yes | I would, but only if you would benefit by going to a local school. For my degree, it's better to seek out a more dedicated school. |
| Program Reputation | 8 | Rowan is very well known around here. They are more known for their sciences and teaching programs. |
| Program Quality | 5 | Rowan is much more focused on traditional subjects such as biology. Hospitality isn't one of their stronger degrees. |
| Instruction | 5 | Teachers did not coordinate their tasks like they were supposed to. Some of them weren't familiar with their own courses! |
| How Difficult | 3 | I've always found it easy, so maybe it's unfair to ask me. I did not find the courses difficult. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | They liked to give us hands-on training. I also spent time at local businesses as part of my class. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 6 | No better or worse than other degrees. No difference really. |
| Academic Facilities | 4 | They aren't geared towards my degree, unfortunately. They should have had more experienced teachers. |
| Social Life | 9 | People are friendly and welcoming. There are parties, but not enough to be too distracting. |
| Placement Services | 6 | They have a lot of job fairs. There is an office that supplies me with free information on all kinds of degrees, etc. |
| Alumni Network | 7 | I get emails all of the time for events. There are also alumni-only job fairs. |
Seton Hall University • South Orange, NJ
Studying Communications/Marketing And Public Relations (completion in 2010)

"Not enough campus interaction. However, I received a great education and I am able to appreciate it more after I graduated than when I attended the school and was looking for a good time."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | If the tuition wasn't so high I believe more students would live on campus, and thus there would be more campus activities. The campus is too small and sometimes felt like high school all over again because everyone had their cliques at lunch and rumors spread fast. Nevertheless, after realizing college is more about learning and less about relationships, one focuses more on education around junior or senior year. The professors taught a vast range of subjects, and depending on which area of sales you wanted to go in to, helped you determine the courses you should take. |
| Program Reputation | 10 | The program has a great reputation because it has a wide variety of courses. For example, one person can study merchandising, advertisement, web design, public speaking, and communication research, which are all under the same program. You are able to understand how to build a business as well as how to be a part of one. |
| Program Quality | 10 | Not only was I shown what to look for on a personal level, but I was also shown how to navigate different software. I am able to work in human resources doing payroll, or I can be on the sales floor counting inventory. |
| Instruction | 5 | Even though role playing helped understand different situations, working at a department store can not be taught in class. Learning about how to handle multiple personalities is one thing, but actually handling the personalities in person is extremely challenging. |
| How Difficult | 8 | Most of the software courses, such as those in which you create your own website, 3D design, billboard, or commercial, were challenging because it was in the state of mind for entrepreneurs. If you are a people person and like to interact, it takes longer to pick up the material. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | Most professors use textbooks. Most professors even use online textbooks so online students to follow along in class. Professors email their Powerpoints to students, which has its pros and cons. Students are able to look over future material for practice; however, some do not attend class because the lessons are already provided. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 1 | Seton Hall is a commuter school. Therefore, most classes were available Mon-Fri only. They have a handful of saturday classes which are offered once a year. It takes a vast amount of time to be approved for loans and to drop/enter courses as well. |
| Academic Facilities | 10 | The library is open 24/7 and provides study rooms. The media is up to date (projectors, computers) and the school provides laptops for each student. Professors post their free hours on their doors and students can sign up for an appointment to speak with professors or receive private tutoring. |
| Social Life | 7 | Most students attend basketball or soccer games. School dances, king and queen functions, and school spirit functions on the lawn are picking up, but few people attend. Seton Hall is mostly known for fraternity/sorority associations. |
| Placement Services | 5 | The career assistance department went over resumes and cover letters, but did not give you any advice on how to improve them. Also, they did not alert students about on campus interviews. |
| Alumni Network | 7 | I was able to communicate with Alumni by a website known as Navigator. However, Seton Hall limits how many people you can interact with by assigning points. For example, everyone starts off with 5 points, meaning you can only email/telephone 5 alumni. They key was to communicate by joining network events. For example, if a company was coming to recruit, you would attend the event and meet more than one alumni and it takes the same amount of points. |
Caldwell College • Caldwell, NJ
Studying Sales/Marketing (completion in 2008)

"I was very satisfied with my school. Thanks to my education I have a job that I love. It is also a Catholic school, so it was great for discipline."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | yes | Yes I would. I learned a lot from my classes and I also enjoyed the environment and the teachers. I have many friends that I can thank Caldwell for and I am very happy. |
| Program Reputation | 7 | I do not think my school's reputation was based on my field. There were other majors that the school was more known for. But even still, they did a great job. |
| Program Quality | 8 | The program was good, helpful, and I learned a lot. I would tell people to definitely go look at the school because I think others would like it and learn from it. |
| Instruction | 8 | I definitely learned a lot while in school. The amount that you are taught is amazing. |
| How Difficult | 6 | Honestly, it wasn't that difficult, at least not for me. The classes were a little tough, but the online classes that I had were easy. Also, there were plenty of people to help you if you needed help. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | It was not very hands on as there were a lot of books required. But there was a great intern program. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 8 | The schedule was good. I did a mixture of classes both at night and during the day. I also took a few online classes as well and they were very easy to understand. |
| Academic Facilities | 8 | The library was extremely large and anything you needed could be found in there. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. The class rooms were good sized but they were not overcrowded. There was a large computer room which was also a part of the library. |
| Social Life | 9 | There was plenty of school spirit at my school. Games, fairs, parties - it was a great time. The school colors were nice as well. It was also very easy to make friends. |
| Placement Services | 7 | It took a little more time then I wold have liked to find a job, but I was happy with it. I was surprised by how many people were in the same field as I was and maybe that is why it took so long. |
| Alumni Network | 8 | The alumni was good, and I was able to attend many events and meetings because I was on the school board. As far as the network goes, they were great in terms of communication. |
Berge Community College • Paramus, NJ
Studying Psychology (completion in )

• 9/25/2011
"The school did not have the grandness of a four year school, but it is ok because I was not looking for that. I could make any schedule I wanted and the classes were cheap."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | yes | You can get the same education at Bergen than you can at most schools for a fraction of the price and a great deal of your credits will transfer. |
| Program Reputation | 8 | The school in general has a horrible graduating rate because of all the transfers and drop outs. Overall, I am not really sure about the psychology program's reputation. I am assuming that it is positive and a good program because of all the students and because of the school's reputation itself. |
| Program Quality | 8 | Even though Bergen is a community college, it is the best community college in the state. |
| Instruction | 8 | The school allowed you freedom to pick a number of classes that meet a requirement and so I found my classes more interesting. Again, the school is tops in the state and classes are transferable to any in the state. Most credits will be accepted. |
| How Difficult | 8 | I was on the dean's list and did well. However, I feel like there are much more difficult programs (medical, etc). |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | The learning is more book oriented. There are many online classes which are not very hands on. However, there are many classes where a hands on lab must be taken. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 10 | Bergen offers classes from 7am to 8:30pm. In addition to the spring and fall semesters there are also summer, winter, online, and hybrid classes. |
| Academic Facilities | 8 | The psychology program has its own wing of the school and its own department heads. Classes are not overcrowded and it's easy to get help. |
| Social Life | 7 | I knew a lot of the people going to school with me at the time so that was positive. However, the school had no dorms, frats, or anything associated with in school living. |
Monmouth University • West Long Branch, NJ
Studying Business & Marketing (completion in 2000)

• 10/2/2011
"It was a good school. But I'm sure there are better ones out there with better teachers and resources."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | This depends on the person. Sales and retail is not for everyone. Some just can't hack it, especially in a management position. |
| Program Reputation | 7 | Monmouth was known for sciences. However, what you never heard about was the business department and in my opinion it's their best kept secret! |
| Program Quality | 10 | Monmouth was a great school! I started out wanting to be a doctor and ended up in a business and marketing education course and I was hooked! |
| Instruction | 9 | Oh, this was great! Everything I learned and utilize in the work place today I learned from my courses in Monmouth. |
| How Difficult | 5 | I would say average as it never gave me a problem. I remember not having to study much in school. They were mostly easy courses for me. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | This was a fifty-fifty kind of thing. The courses were a composite mix of text book learning and then getting out there and doing it yourself. We had a semester where we started our own business and had to keep it in the red for 60 days. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 5 | No different than anywhere else. Teachers were never around, many classes were taught by assistants. There were summer courses for those crazy enough to take courses in the summer. It was relatively average in my book. |
| Academic Facilities | 7 | I think Monmouth could have used some more resources for their business department. However, the teachers made it a fantastic experience overall. |
| Social Life | 10 | Where do I begin? I had the most friends in my life. A date every weekend and I got along well with everyone in every clique, from the druggies to the jocks. |
| Placement Services | 1 | Disgusting! Didn't do a thing for me, gave me my diploma and said, "Have at, it kid!" Not even a “good luck!” |
| Alumni Network | 8 | It was okay. We're talking a couple years back, I'm sure they have improved by now. Probably at the time it was really great in the sense that it did connect everyone and everything. |
Camden County College • Blackwood, NJ
Studying Dietetic Technology (completion in 2010)

• 11/17/2011
"If I had a better financial situation I definitely would have gone to a different school. I like the way they set up the program, but I was not happy with the teachers."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | This depends on what kind of learner the person is. I have taught myself more than I would have liked to while paying for my schooling. |
| Program Reputation | 10 | Camden County's program is very well known because it is one of few in the area. It also transfers well with UMDNJ's bachelor's program. |
| Program Quality | 5 | Again, my major doesn't pertain to sales. However, the program I am in at CCC is satisfactory. |
| How Difficult | 7 | Dietetic technology is a lot of medical work. Aside from clinical work, another aspect is food service management. I have taken two management classes that were a little harder than average. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | It is very hands on. I had to complete 350 hours of field work before graduating. I had to take food service management classes and show that I could do it in a real setting. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 6 | The director of the program tries to offer classes at different times. Many people have to work during the day. |
| Academic Facilities | 5 | There is nothing spectacular about their resources. They are very average. |
| Social Life | 5 | There are some fundraisers and sports events. It is a county college, so there is not as much as a 4 year school would offer. |
| Placement Services | 8 | It is well planned because as a student, you have to do tons of field work, which connects you with a lot of people. It is very strategically planned. |
| Alumni Network | 7 | I am in an honors society - Theta Phi Kappa. Being a member has really kept me connected with alumni. |
Fairleigh Dickinson University • Teaneck, NJ
Studying Management (completion in 2008)

• 11/15/2011
"Quite satisfied, especially with the facilities and the network of friends I made. The school can improve in many aspects from an academic viewpoint. It needs to update its academic programs to include more recent and relevant materials, research, and ideas."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | yes | I would recommend it to people in my area. The school is one of the better schools in North New Jersey, and it's not terribly expensive. The class schedules are flexible so someone who has a full-time job could study there by taking evening classes. |
| Program Reputation | 8 | The business/management school has a good reputation in the area, especially in northern New Jersey. We have good students come into to the school every year. The faculty is very capable, as are the resources in the business department/building. |
| Program Quality | 7 | The program was good in that it covered a lot of material and prepared us in the basics. It needs more relevant material, especially regarding marketing and sales for the high-tech and software industries. |
| Instruction | 7 | The program at FDU was good in that it taught me all the basics of management and working in sales. I think it could have done a better job of pushing us to learn through internships or projects. |
| How Difficult | 7 | the coursework was a bit demanding. There was also a lot of work to be done outside of class - reading, research, etc. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | It was mostly book learning oriented. A couple of classes were more hands-on, so we felt like we learned more in those classes. It depended on the professor teaching the course. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 8 | The class schedule was very flexible and provided a lot of options. There were always multiple options to choose from - morning, day, or evening classes. A few classes were online as well. |
| Academic Facilities | 7 | The business library was decent. The computer facilities are great, if a little crowded at times. The classrooms were roomy, with not too many students. Professors were always helpful. |
| Social Life | 8 | The school spirit was great during my stay. Our basketball team was doing great in the NEC, and even made it to the NCAA tournament. So there was a lot of fun and excitement. Also a lot of parties! |
| Placement Services | 5 | This is one area I am disappointed in. The yearly career fair almost never had any companies looking for business school students to hire. Most companies were there to hire students from the engineering/software field. I had to look for and find a job on my own, and so did all of my friends. |
| Alumni Network | 6 | The school's alumni support is lacking, in my opinion. I have not been able to get much support, although the few alumni I do know are friendly and try to help. |

Studying Sales (completion in 2010)

• 11/27/2011
"I am satisfied with this school. They provide sufficient knowledge for their courses."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | yes | The marketing course is easy to learn and getting a job is simple. |
| Program Reputation | 6 | They have a wonderful reputation for their marketing course. |
| Program Quality | 6 | They provide sufficient knowledge of each individual subject. Also they have good teachers for each subject. |
| Instruction | 7 | They have provided wonderful knowledge and all study materials. We have a very good library. |
| How Difficult | 6 | They always have pop tests covering all study materials. One must always prepare for the tests. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | Hands-on knowledge is helpful in understanding the course. The book is also good but requires help for practical knowledge. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 5 | They provide a lot of flexibility. Whenever they hold classes we have to attend, even on weekends. |
| Academic Facilities | 7 | Our school has a large classroom and a big library hall with lots of books. They have a lot of computers in laboratories in which we do hands-on work. |
| Social Life | 8 | We hold an event where other students also participate and share their knowledge. The school also holds annual athletic events and competitions. |
| Placement Services | 7 | Companies love to hire students in the marketing program from this school. |
| Alumni Network | 7 | They provide get together meetings with their upperclassmen to share experiences. |
Fairleigh Dickinson University • Teaneck, NJ
Studying Business (completion in 2006)

• 12/29/2011
"Fairleigh Dickinson was extremely expensive, and tuition continued to increase by as much as 15% per semester. I found this to be outrageous and unaffordable."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | no | I did not enjoy my time at FDU. I feel that a community college would provide the same experience at a small fraction of the cost. |
| Program Reputation | 5 | Fairleigh Dickinson has a decent reputation in general. Although a lot of their focus is on nursing, the business program is okay. |
| Program Quality | 2 | I did not enjoy my time at Fairleigh Dickinson University. I felt that it was extremely overpriced for mediocre coursework. |
| Instruction | 2 | Most of my professors did not have a very strong grasp on the English language. This made it difficult to discuss anything other than material straight from the book. |
| How Difficult | 4 | Business was not a very difficult area of study. I found it to be somewhat boring at times, but not very difficult. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | There were certain courses where it was 100% reading out of the book, but there were others where it was all open discussion. It seemed to depend entirely on the professor. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 6 | Most of the time, I was able to find a schedule that fit my needs. When scheduled by the school for my first semester, however, the class schedule made no sense whatsoever. |
| Academic Facilities | 5 | The library was pretty up to date when I attended FDU. However, there were not enough computers available for the demand. |
| Social Life | 3 | FDU is 75% commuting students, so there is not much in the way of school spirit. They do have sports teams and events, but attendance is low. |
| Placement Services | 6 | They do a lot in the way of helping their students find work in the field after graduation. They offer career placement, and in some cases, guarantee hiring. |
| Alumni Network | 3 | 75% of the students at Fairleigh Dickinson's Teaneck campus are commuters, so there is not much in the way of student relations. I have not seen anyone with whom I went to college since I left. |
