"I am very happy with my decision and I am grateful this school gave me all the opportunities I needed and the knowledge required to do well in the real world."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThis school will definitely put you on the right track and with a lot of patience, you will be able to pursue the career you always wanted.
Program Reputation10It is a very well known college for business and has high standards. The business major is very difficult to get into and requires a high GPA.
Program Quality10The program was very informative and I was able to educate myself in this particular major. I am very pleased with this program and it has been very beneficial to me.
Instruction10
How Difficult10It was very challenging and I had a lot of work to do. It required a lot of patience and determination.
Hands-On vs. BookishI was able to “learn by doing things,”such as by giving presentations or visiting very prestigious places.
Schedule Flexibility10The school's schedule is very flexible and offered a wide range of courses. I was even able to take courses over the summer.
Academic Facilities10There is a large library located conveniently inside the school and it has a very resourceful information desk. The classroom space is very spacious and clean.
Social Life10The school has many sororities and fraternities. They have a lot of promotional events and organizations that allow students to socialize.
Placement Services10The school provided excellent service and I was able to get a job prior to my graduation. I am very pleased with the school's approach towards helping me.
Alumni Network10The school's alumni was very impressive and helpful. I felt very supported after my graduation.

Queensboro Community College • Bayside, NY
Studying Business Transfer (completion in 2004)

7/10/2011

"I am not particular about any school or program as long as it is offered by a state or publicly funded program. I am very satisfied with the college and the program."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesIt's kind of hard to recommend this college because I am on the west coast and the college is on east coast. However, I have family and friends around that college and I will definitely recommend it to them.
Program Reputation6In the City University of New York school system, this is a great school and is located in a great Bayside area. QCC has other majors which are more famous than my program. However, it is a great program for a student leaning towards business, accounting, or calculus degrees because their credits gets accepted 100% by every college in the state and outside of it.
Program Quality5It did give me a degree, however all the jobs I have held have not required any degree. They all require only a high school diploma.
Instruction6What I learned in college regarding marketing is very much applicable today. Also, some calculus and math skills that I was taught are useful in my current position.
How Difficult2I don't think it has any aspect of difficulty. However, one challenging part was Calculus I and II. Other than that, I found it interesting.
Hands-On vs. BookishHands on is the best way to absorb information; book reading at times gets boring.
Schedule Flexibility8As I mentioned, I used to sell real estate in the neighborhood and had utilized the flexibility of the school's scheduling. I used to take classes early in the morning and very late at night.
Academic Facilities8The professors and the group support was extremely helpful. I am a great fan of groups and team work and we were able to chose groups in marketing research and business communication classes. However, Astronomy class groups were boring at times because no one would come up with any material. Overall, it was great.
Social Life6Great! I was part of a couple of student clubs. We had great chemistry with other clubs and were always open to new ideas. Our members were open to all communities, religions, ethnicities, and activities. I really miss club activities and specially club day when everyone is allowed to exhibit.
Placement Services2I may not be the right person to ask this question because I never worked for the college. I was selling real estate while I was at the school. However, I tried to get assistance from career service. I was never contacted back. Conclusively, it is the poorest of all.
Alumni Network4I am not a member of my school's alumni association since I live far away. Yet I did donate some funds back in 2005 and I used to get their newspaper.

SUNY Albany • Albany, NY
Studying Political Science (completion in 2009)

7/28/2011

"I had a great learning and social experience at my school. The only thing I disliked was the location (in the middle of the slums of Albany - student housing is scary)."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesPertaining to sales management, Albany has a really good Business and Management program available. Most people I know who chose those majors were hired right out of school.
Program Reputation8The political science program is intense, and known by many students at surrounding schools. It has a good reputation.
Program Quality9The Political Science department at SUNY Albany is great. Their downtown campus is solely for poly sci classes. The teachers are great as well.
Instruction8The quality of instruction is great. Classes are very small, unlike most other majors at the school.
How Difficult8This program involved a lot of 20-30 page papers... not difficult if you are interested in the topics, but extremely time consuming. Also, many of the classes' grades are based completely from papers and nothing else, which can be stressful.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt's completely a mix, and depends on what your major is. Political Science is very hands on, for example, while Biology is much more book oriented.
Schedule Flexibility9Classes are extremely flexible, and a lot of the classes I took had an online portion with an evening class or were fully online. There are also a lot of course offerings during the summer and winter sessions. There were just no weekend options, which may be nice for people who want to work.
Academic Facilities7The facilities and resources are great. There are three libraries with plenty of media, computers, and labs. There's lots of space in classrooms and many classes are taught in large lecture centers.
Social Life10SUNY Albany is definitely a socially centered school. Sports and Greek life are very popular there. I was part of a sorority and had a great social experience.
Placement Services7As far as job placement and career assistance, I must have missed something. I think SUNY Albany just has way too many students and not enough advisers. It took 3 years just for my adviser to remember my name because she had so many students.
Alumni Network6Albany has a very strong alumni network. I have not taken advantage of it at all though.

Cornell University • Ithaca, NY
Studying Economics (completion in 2004)

8/6/2011

"It was a great experience and for the rest of my life I'll have the value of being able to say I attended such a prestigious university."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesGreat program for econ majors. Great school overall.
Program Reputation8Cornell is an ivy league school and thus it carries a large degree of prestige with it.
Program Quality8Cornell was and is an excellent university, especially for econ majors. The professors are extremely reputable, albeit not completely accessible.
Instruction8I could have been better assisted with career placement. But on the whole, I was taught skills that I utilize on a daily basis to this day.
How Difficult8Cornell is known as a tough school. The work is difficult and the volume of it is staggering. But if you can make it through, you're well prepared for life in the real world.
Hands-On vs. BookishRight down the middle on this point. Lots of book learning and a fair bit of hands on instructions.
Schedule Flexibility7You have some flexibility in scheduling. But there are some courses that are only offered at certain times during certain semesters.
Academic Facilities8Excellent facilities and a beautiful campus.
Social Life7I had a good social experience there. It's large, and easy to get lost, ie: not be able to find yourself. But if you meet the right people, you can make good friends for life.
Placement Services5Could have been much better. I think the big issue is that Cornell is such a large school, that it's hard to get specialized attention on this matter.
Alumni Network8Alumni support is a huge plus when talking about cornell. Alumni are always willing to lend a hand, give advice, or consider you for employment opportunities

Columbia University • New York, NY
Studying History (completion in 2011)

9/11/2011

"Columbia opened a lot of doors for me career-wise. I am a better thinker and communicator because of my teachers and classmates."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesA strong liberal arts foundation at Columbia will prepare you for almost any career challenge. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone who wants their mind opened and their limits tested.
Program Reputation10Columbia is very well-known for its History department. Many students choose this major, then go on to careers in finance, law, etc.
Program Quality10Columbia's American History professors are leaders in the field. The research and writing skills I gained through examining primary sources helped me get my job today.
Instruction8I learned high-level critical thinking skills. While I wasn't trained for specific duties, I was prepared to work very hard.
How Difficult8The quantity of reading was very challenging. My professors expected flawless writing at a very high level as well.
Hands-On vs. BookishMost of my learning happened independently. My department had mandatory discussion sections for lecture classes, but they were rarely as useful as the work we were assigned to do on our own.
Schedule Flexibility2Columbia is hardly flexible. There are no evening or weekend classes and very few Friday classes. You are pretty much forced to be a traditional student.
Academic Facilities7The classrooms in Fayerweather are a little old and run down, but it kind of works for studying history. The library is so well-staffed with really smart people who can help with term papers in the blink of an eye. I'm so glad my TAs encouraged me to take advantage of it.
Social Life6Many students get caught up in life off campus since we're in New York City. That was definitely the case with me, although there were plenty of opportunities to interact with classmates on campus.
Placement Services8Most students avoid the career center and get jobs through other websites with better UX design or through networking. I had a good experience, and actually connected with my current employer through the career center at Columbia.
Alumni Network8Columbia alums take care of each other. I'm currently employed by one, and was recruited directly.

New York University • New York, NY
Studying Social Work (completion in 2000)

9/10/2011

"I love NYU! The amount of resources that NYU had was criminal, and I was so excited to take advantage of them."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noThe return in social work may not provide the same level of return on investment as sales and marketing. Many of the sales skill sets can be learned with diligence, discipline, and clarity of focus, and not the fluff of a college degree. Tuition cost should be factored in to this decision as well.
Program Reputation9It is the largest private university in the country, and located smack-dead in the middle of The Village. Many alumni are well respected in their areas and give back to school.
Program Quality7The return on investment for a career in social work is not as profitable as being a relatively successful independent business owner. You don't go to NYU for sales.
Instruction8The School of Social Work invested a good deal of time to prepare its students for post graduation, including, but not limited to, licensing preparation, understanding of code of ethics, and even salary expectations as an NYU graduate.
How Difficult9Working full time and having a work-study/fellowship responsibility added to the weight of graduate school. NYU provided an extremely clinically-focused, ego-strength curriculum which made several classes feel like counseling, sometimes even therapy. An extremely competitive environment that will stretch you to be your best... whatever that may be.
Hands-On vs. BookishUnfortunately, when choosing a schedule you don't always get the professors you want and it shows why so many other students didn't register for the class. I was disappointed when I didn't hear about professors and students having lunch together and discussing subject matter. Although the curriculum was intense, the professors were somewhat dry and distant.
Schedule Flexibility8For the amount of money paid in tuition, I would expect the school to be flexible.
Academic Facilities10The library is top-notch! The book store always met my needs for school gear.
Social Life5Unfortunately, I didn't connect with many of the students. The level of commitments coupled with being a father of two at the time didn't allow time for being social.
Placement Services8I received my first full-time job in New York because of the career placement website. The center provide workshops, job fairs, and other events to assist in job placement.
Alumni Network6I get mailings, but a phone call would be more impressive. Having all these student loans makes it hard to score this higher.

Hunter College • Manhattan, NY
Studying Economics (completion in 2011)

9/12/2011

"I received a decent public education at a minimal price. I was able to take the courses I wanted and pursue opportunities external of the school atmosphere. However, I wish I had more guidance and I wish the school had more courses in economics."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeYes, I would recommend it because it provided me with the skills I needed to be a sales manager. Today, I understand the underlining aspects that affect our economy and therefore, the sales at my store. However, depending on the specific interest in economics, I would or would not recommend the program.
Program Reputation4My school, Hunter College at CUNY, is not known for its business or economics courses; it is famous for the sciences. I had to take multiple economics courses at Baruch College at CUNY in order to immerse myself further into the major. Additionally, the professors who taught economics were involved in other departments, making it harder for them to fully dedicate themselves to economics majors.
Program Quality8My economics courses delved into various economic models, economic theories and experiential learning. I was able to immerse myself both quantitatively and qualitatively.
Instruction5Most of the material I learned in my economics courses did not directly apply to my current role. However, I am able to employ certain skills I gained during college.
How Difficult5My economics courses required a high level of comprehension and critical analysis. However, they lacked in challenging me to think beyond the box.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe majority of my course work and interaction with professors was based on book learning. Emphasis on book learning was huge and students were expected to rely heavily on personal research, textbooks, and class notes. Hands-on experiences were available, but one had to look for them and express interest.
Schedule Flexibility4My school offered many evening options, because a substantial amount of students worked full-time during the day. However, its weekend offerings and summer offerings were minimal and online courses were nonexistent. Also, economics courses were very limited, so flexibility as an economics major was hard.
Academic Facilities8Hunter College's resources were plentiful and had extraordinary long hours. During midterm and finals week, the library and student resource centers were open 24/7, which was extremely helpful. The economics department's tutoring services were minimal, so I had to either attend professor office hours constantly or hire my own personal tutor.
Social Life6Hunter College is mostly a commuter school with most students living at home. Hardly any lived at the dorms; therefore, school spirit was very limited. Although the undergraduate student government planned various events, not many students attended because they all went home.
Placement Services3My school's career center provided minimal assistance for me throughout my four years in college. I had to venture out on my own and network to find job opportunities. However, they did provide resume workshops that were extremely helpful.
Alumni Network9The alumni network is constantly hosting events and informing us of job and fellowship opportunities. I obtained my current position through networking with an alum.

University At Albany • Albany, NY
Studying Economics (completion in 1995)

9/26/2011

"I did have a good time in college from a social standpoint. I was involved in the Greek program and heavily involved in campus government. But from an academic point of view, the university left a lot to be desired."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noI would not recommend the university if a student wanted to pursue a sales career, but in the university's defense, there are very few classes that can prepare for a career in sales.
Program Reputation5I really have no idea how the school currently stands.
Program Quality6The program was more of a universal degree. I wish there were more specific programs at the time of my graduation for Computer Science and Management.
Instruction5The faculty at Albany was uninspiring. The preparation for real world application was non existent.
How Difficult7Economics in general was a more abstract degree which made it a difficult line of study. The faculty did not do a good job of making the classes interesting at all.
Hands-On vs. BookishMost classes were by the book with exams just a representation of text. The faculty did little to stray from the text and very rarely made things interesting.
Schedule Flexibility9I was able to have a very flexible study program. This allowed me to pursue internships in finance and government for work preparation.
Academic Facilities7Facilities were outdated during my tenure at the university. Computer programs were very limited with minimal access to computers.
Social Life9The greek program on campus was very popular with 40% of the campus involved. So the social programs were a strong point of the university.
Placement Services3There were very few good companies recruiting on campus when I graduated. There was also no resume guidance when I worked on mine. It would have been better to have a class on career preparation including how to interview and resume prep.
Alumni Network4There is a small alumni program. This is a public school without major influences from key alumni to drive fund raising campaigns.

New York Institute Of Technology • New York, NY
Studying Finance/Business Administration (completion in 2009)

9/26/2011

"Very satisfied with my school because of what they did for me. Only thing I wasn't too satisfied about was the cost of tuition which was $22,000 per year... but luckily while my fellow classmates had to pay $88,000 after graduation, I only had to pay $16,000 since I received a number of scholarships. I'm happy with the education I received."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeThe reason I answer maybe is because I would suggest that those who are interested in pursuing my career try for the best, which would be Harvard Business School, Wharton School of Management, Columbia Business School, etc. If they don't make it into those, then it's fine to apply to the school I went to.
Program Reputation5I believe NYIT is not known for its business school, but rather for its engineering and architecture programs instead. The school of management (SoM), however, is a decent school and has great professors.
Program Quality7My university was decent in that the professors we had teaching there were not just academics, they had present-day real world experience too. They were able to provide commentary on the material in the books with an outlook on today's business world, which made me happy.
Instruction8I went to a private school, so class sizes were small and I was able to get more one-on-one interaction with the professors for every class. This allowed me to get questions answered that I believe would not have been able to be answered had I attended a large university with big lecture halls.
How Difficult7The work load was not too difficult, but what was difficult was understanding the more complicated formulas. We often had to remember not just one chapter, but up to five chapters of material for one exam, which made things somewhat difficult.
Hands-On vs. BookishDefinitely a mix. We had a couple of classes where we had to go to the federal reserve and make a presentation to the board of directors there, we had to present to the CEO of a large company called Broadridge, and we also had to read a number of books. A fair mix of both.
Schedule Flexibility9They were always very flexible with their scheduling. I asked them what days were available for certain classes, and they'd tell me. If it didn't fit my schedule, I'd be able to take it another time or take another class in place of it.
Academic Facilities5My university was a small school, so the classrooms weren't really that large. The library was alright I suppose, but nothing to really write home about.
Social Life10One thing that my college did do for me, which I loved, is that they placed me in the New York Times, NYT Magazine, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Daily News and other publishings, as well as the school's website on the front page for over a year. They also had a large poster of me in the school's library. This got me noticed by many people on campus and I would have people approach me asking me where they had seen me before or why they saw my face all over the place. So my social experience at this school was excellent, and I wouldn't have had this experience at any large university that didn't take a look or recognize individual students' achievements.
Placement Services6Although the school does have a career services center, I personally did not use them. From the times I had spoken with them, they were more focused on placing me in a regular every day job, which I did not want. I wanted something better than that, but they wanted to start me out at the very bottom. I'm glad I didn't... I instead chose to go on my own and apply to higher level jobs where you needed some qualifications to apply, but I figured with all of my extra curricular activities/classes I'd taken, I'd be able to convince the interviewer to see past that -- and I did.
Alumni Network4I don't know much about my old school's alumni network. All I know is that I receive a magazine from them every once in a while and was once asked to make a donation to the school. What types of support they have, I don't know.

SUNY Oneonta • Oneonta, NY
Studying Business Economics (completion in 1997)

10/12/2011

"I enjoyed the experience and met lots of life long friends. I do feel the education was okay, but would have enjoyed more hands on learning."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeWhile I am sure there are more reputable schools for business, I do think the school was good for the money. I also really enjoyed the social life.
Program Reputation6I am not sure if it still has a good reputation for business, but it did back then. That was part of the reason I chose the school.
Program Quality6I learned quite a bit of useful information. I do think they should teach more real life classes.
Instruction5I had already been working in my field while attending school. I feel a lot of the classes were not relevant to my job.
How Difficult7I had a harder time with the science and math courses. Most of that information was useless to me in the field.
Hands-On vs. BookishI believe I had one course that was sort of hands-on, but that was it. Most of the classes were very book oriented.
Schedule Flexibility3I do not believe they offer any evening or weekend classes. I was there full time so that wasn't a concern for me.
Academic Facilities5I think the computer lab could have been larger. I remember there being an issue with the availability of desktops and certain projects had to be completed there.
Social Life9Parties were always happening. The social experience was never an issue.
Placement Services5I am not sure of all the available services. I know they helped with my resume but I already was working in my field.
Alumni Network4The only time I hear from the school is when they are fundraising. I am in contact with friends but I wouldn't call that alumni support.

St. John's University • Jamaica, NY
Studying Marketing (completion in 2001)

11/20/2011

"Overall, I enjoyed my school experience and had no problem with it. The social scene was pretty cool. I enjoyed it."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI would recommend my school to others pursuing my career. Overall, I felt like they did their job.
Program Reputation8St. John's has a very strong reputation for being a school with an excellent marketing program. Many successful businessmen graduated from there.
Program Quality5My school taught me things from textbooks, but it can't compare with learning from life experience. Schools should try to give more real-world training with internships.
Instruction8I had very strong teachers in their fields. Most had business backgrounds and enjoyed what they did.
How Difficult5Overall, my studies weren't overly difficult. There were a few subjects that were more difficult than others, like accounting and economics, but overall, it was about average.
Hands-On vs. BookishSt John's taught more from the book than anything else. Many teachers had job experience, but they still talked from textbooks.
Schedule Flexibility5Certain classes are flexible, but not all of them are. There are certain courses that are only taught at one time of the day or week.
Academic Facilities7I never had a problem locating tools for me to finish my project, and the library was always open. They also had computer labs to use.
Social Life7I had a good social experience at my school, for a school without dorms at the time. I had a lot of friends there.
Placement ServicesFrom what I understand, St. John's has a good job placement program, but I never personally participated in it. My friends still look for jobs, but that's not the school's fault.
Alumni NetworkI try not to get involved in my school's alumni work, and I avoid any phone calls or mailings. I look at school as something in my past and I don't want to look back on it.

Pace University • Pleasantville, NY
Studying Criminal Justice (completion in 2000)

11/27/2011

"If I had the power to turn back time, I would reconsider my choice. I met many good people, however the price of the school (student loan debt) would be cause enough to choose a different school."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeMy field was not within my major. I cannot answer this honestly from that standpoint, however I would venture to say that one could receive more education for less money.
Program Reputation3There are many schools with a better reputation. Pace's Criminal Justice program is nothing special and believed to be sub-par.
Program Quality2I am currently not employed in my field of study. Overall, the degree could have been attained for a much lower price for the same or better level of education.
Instruction1Pace University is high priced for an average education. Counselors do a poor job at assisting students in their career and ensure they are on the path they want to be. In retrospect, my choice of colleges was a very poor decision.
How Difficult5I found the courses to be basic. I am sure they were no better then any other courses of study at other schools.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere was very little, if any hands on learning. I would estimate that 99% of all learning is from books, which teaches very little about the real world.
Schedule Flexibility8There were many solid options. Internet, night, day and weekend courses were available. There were only a few occasions where it was tough to make a schedule.
Academic Facilities4The computer room was constantly filled. The library seemed to be a meeting area for loud people, especially during finals - which to me shows it was poorly managed and security was lackluster at best.
Social Life6The school limited social interactions. Greek life was limited and the school rarely held functions that students wanted to attend. "Spirit" was non-existent.
Placement Services1To be honest, I don't know if they have career assistance. The closest they ever came was a career fair that was obscure and poorly publicized. Pace had very few commendable qualities in terms of a University.
Alumni Network2For those in Greek letter organizations, there is an alumni network. As far as the common student, I don't know of any applicable network

The New School • New York City, NY
Studying International Affairs (completion in 2012)

11/28/2011

"The school is easy to navigate and is organized and conscious of world issues like sustainability and energy conservation. I love the school's progressive nature and their acceptance of many different types of students. The teachers are extremely helpful and interesting individuals."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThe New School international affairs program is amazing because it combines hands on learning with basic lectures. I love the teachers I have had thus far because of their knowledge and experience.
Program Reputation10The New School is known for its progressive attitude for social change. The student body is comprised of a plethora of students from around the world with different backgrounds and opinions. People see the New School as a positive institution.
Program Quality9This program is very progressive and change-oriented. The teachers are all extremely qualified and knowledgeable. A number of them are involved in very interesting international projects outside of school.
Instruction10Through a combination of hands-on and book learning I have gained a vast knowledge of international affairs. I am able to take courses on a number of subjects from economics to culture and social policy development.
How Difficult6The work itself is not necessarily difficult. The difficult part of the curriculum is managing time and getting all of the work and reading done.
Hands-On vs. BookishStudents mostly take lecture classes that are book and lecture based. The option is available to do a practicum study or field study abroad.
Schedule Flexibility8Core classes are offered on different days at a variety of times. Elective courses usually only have one or two time slots per week so they are a bit less flexible. However, there are so many interesting classes that you can definitely find a class that fits into your schedule without jeopardizing the education quality.
Academic Facilities8The space for the international affairs program is rather small. The New School has several buildings in Manhattan with a variety of different resources. The computer labs and libraries have everything a student needs.
Social Life7School spirit and athletics are limited at the New School. However, the school provides several public discussions, lectures, forums, social events, theater productions, etc.
Placement Services10The school's website has a great database of available jobs and internships in the field. I have not personally been to the career services office but I know a number of teachers and administrators who know about job offerings in the field who are great resources.
Alumni Network8I have not been in touch with any alumni but the overall support group of faculty and administration is very strong. I am sure if I needed assistance from an alumni or had interest in a particular field that they could point me in the right direction and put me in contact with alumni.

Stony Brook University • Stony Brook, NY
Studying Business Management (completion in 2003)

12/1/2011

"I would recommend anyone to the business program. The school as a whole is built on a wonderful piece of property that made learning very comfortable."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesUndoubtedly...my ultimate recommendation is to specialize your major and not just major in business management.
Program ReputationI am not sure how the program is currently holding up. I would like to find out, though.
Program Quality9Stony Brook's School of Business has an excellent teaching facility filled with professionals, both still working in the industry and retired. I would recommend this program to anyone.
Instruction5The career prep was a little lacking. There was no focus from the university on business majors.
How Difficult7I enjoyed the slight challenge within the programs. Most of the professors made it interesting, so you wanted to learn more.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere was a good mix of hands on vs. book learning. It did depend on the class, but most professors knew the benefit of learning from experience.
Schedule Flexibility10I was a full-time employee at the time I was in school. The flexibility allowed me to take night classes if I needed to.
Academic Facilities8This school has one of the finest libraries I have seen at a state school. I utilized it very often while writing papers or doing any sort of research.
Social LifeMy social experience was limited. As an older student who lived on campus (I was well into my twenties by then), I limited my interaction so I could focus on my studies.
Placement Services3It is very lacking for business majors. I suspect that is because this school has a heavy medical and engineering student population.
Alumni Network8I receive monthly updates via e-mail on functions, as well as updates to the university. I also use the Stony Brook Alumni page, as well as LinkedIn, to keep up with alumni.

Baruch College • New York, NY
Studying Business Administration (completion in 2005)

12/18/2011

"It was a great school and it was very beautiful. My experience there made me so much more knowledgeable of my surroundings. It opened my eyes into a world of business."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesOne of the best business colleges a person can take in New York! Bernard M. Baruch College is a great school, located in Lexington Street, New York, where the city is very beautiful.
Program Reputation10It has had a great reputation since 1919 and was ranked #25 in the list of the best business schools in the United States.
Program Quality10With extra tutoring above it all, I never fell in any classes. They would never leave a student behind with their learning.
Instruction10Teachers are very knowledgeable, and textbooks recommendations are a great help from the school. It increases my learning capacity and limits.
Hands-On vs. BookishTextbook recommendations are given constantly and they do help a lot!
Schedule Flexibility9You have the ability to change your schedule every semester. School's support is very generous and understanding. Can consider changing of schedules, classes, etc.
Academic Facilities10Student tutors and teacher tutors will always be available 24/7 to help and assist with textbooks you buy for the class.
Social Life8It was a fun and academic experience. An unforgettable one!
Placement Services8I had some trouble looking for my perfect career path. Baruch College only helped me with some cores of finding my career.
Alumni Network5Their support was great. The school system is the best. I recommend it to all people who have a vision or desire of entrepreneurship!

SUNY New Paltz • New Paltz, NY
Studying Communications (completion in 2000)

12/28/2011

"They educated me well. They gave me the tools to excel in my field."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThey are highly qualified. They care about their students.
Program Reputation7My school has a pretty good reputation. Most of their graduates find work within six months of graduating.
Program Quality7My school provided the education and tools for my field. They gave you real-life experience in the field as well.
Instruction8They have well-qualified teachers who invest their time, energy and knowledge into their students. I learned a lot from the school curriculum and I was highly motivated by them.
How Difficult6The curriculum was not easy; you had to work for your grades. If you put the effort in, it wasn't that bad.
Hands-On vs. BookishI'd say my school is 50% hands on and 50% book learning. They believe you can't learn without both of them.
Schedule Flexibility8My school's class schedule is very flexible. They offer morning, evening, Saturday, and online classes.
Academic Facilities10My school's academic facilities and resources were excellent. They have several libraries and computer rooms. Each student has an academic advisor who meets with them twice a semester.
Social Life10My social experience at the school was great. They had several school spirit events, along with parties and social events.
Placement Services5They guide you on where to find work, but they do not place you. You have to find work yourself.
Alumni Network3My school's alumni network and support is not that helpful. Once you graduate, you are pretty much on your own.

New York University • New York, NY
Studying Film (completion in 2003)

1/9/2012

"My degree has opened a lot of doors for me, but if I could do it over, I would go somewhere else. I think a smaller school with a less hefty tuition bill would be best for most students."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noI think getting a great liberal arts education with some business courses thrown in is the best background for working in sales. I would also suggest attending a school that you can afford or where scholarships are offered.
Program Reputation9NYU is known to be one of the best film schools in the country. Having a degree from NYU does open a lot of doors.
Program Quality6NYU is one of the best film schools in the US. However, it is very expensive to attend.
Instruction5I honestly learned more at my internships than I did at school. Many of the classes for undergraduates are taught by inexperienced adjunct professors.
How Difficult3Academically, NYU film school is not very challenging, and students are usually free to build their own curricula. However, you have to be creative and talented to succeed in the art school portion of things.
Hands-On vs. BookishI went to film school, which needs to be hands on in order for learning to take place. I can't speak to other NYU departments' teaching methods.
Academic Facilities10Because NYU is a well-endowed private school, there is a lot of money for equipment and facilities. The film school equipment was always the latest and topnotch.
Social Life3Because NYU has no campus, the student body is not very cohesive. Rather than seeing any school spirit, you feel more like you're a resident of New York who attends classes.
Placement Services2The career services department at NYU is disappointing. There are too many students to service and not enough staff. You're better off job hunting on your own.
Alumni Network2NYU is a very large school and isn't very good at keeping in touch with their alumni, except to ask for money. I've seen much more cohesive alumni networks at smaller schools.

Cornell U. • Ithaca, NY
Studying Engineering (completion in 2000)

2/17/2012

"I really enjoyed my school. I hope to send one of my kids there for a great education."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesAnyone interested in engineering should consider Cornell. It has some of the best resources in the country, with great contacts to get a job after graduation.
Program Reputation9It is ranked in the top 5 in the nation for my major. The school as a whole is ranked in the top 10.
Program Quality8My major opened up doors to many different careers. My school's reputation made it much easier to get interviews for jobs I wanted.
Instruction7Most of what I learned was how to work hard and set goals. I don't actually use much of my studies in my day-to-day work.
How Difficult10I worked extremely hard and felt I had to, to receive good grades. Compared to my peers, I felt like I was working much harder.
Hands-On vs. BookishI thought it had a very good mixture of both. It was required that you did work at home to keep up with the lecture material.
Schedule Flexibility8The school offered night classes as well as summer classes. I felt like that class schedule was very accommodating.
Academic Facilities10The school has some of the top engineering facilities in the country. The school had updated computer labs and 10 libraries to choose from.
Social Life8It was a very social campus. Sporting events and campus-wide parties were very popular to attend.
Placement Services9The school conducted on-campus interviews. They also held job fairs frequently that all could attend.
Alumni Network6Going to a large school and working in New York allows me to use the Cornell network for many resources. Fellow alumni have been extremely helpful in setting up interviews for new opportunities when I want them.

St. John's University • Jamaica, NY
Studying Finance (completion in 2003)

2/14/2012

"There was separation among classmates. Each race hung out with themselves. No school spirit whatsoever. The business program was good, though."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeMy program was good, but the atmosphere wasn't. If you are commuting, it would be a great school, as you don't spend most of your time there. As a person who dormed, I wouldn't recommend it.
Program Reputation8I believe that the reputation for our business program is very good. When I was applying for jobs, I would get compliments on it.
Program Quality8St. John's is a great school for business. Unfortunately, the job market is rough and didn't afford me the chance to get that job in the field. They do offer internship help as well.
Instruction6I feel a lot of what I learned in college doesn't help me in the real world. Most of what I'm using nowadays is from hands-on learning.
How Difficult9The finance program is very difficult. In order to graduate on time, you have to take 18 credits 7 out of 8 semesters. There is no opportunity to minor as well. Also, the classes are very competitive.
Hands-On vs. BookishI feel finance is mostly bookwork. It's something you teach yourself and you need to pay attention to current events. It's not a hands-on subject.
Schedule Flexibility7The core classes were flexible. As you start taking the classes pertaining to your major, it becomes more difficult, as less classes are available.
Academic Facilities9This is something the school is great with. They give you the opportunity to do well. They offer numerous tutors, and the office hours for most of the professors were good.
Social Life4I really didn't care for my school when I went. The sports teams weren't great. The school was segregated based on ethnic group. There was no unity.
Placement ServicesI didn't use my college's job placement or career services. I applied for the jobs myself.
Alumni NetworkI really haven't been in contact with alumni services. All I know is they are constantly asking for money.

State University Of New York, Albany • Albany, NY
Studying Economics/Business (completion in 1995)

1/28/2012

"I enjoyed college, there isn't much I would change. Preferably I would have gone to a more sports-oriented school."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeThis is a state school and offers a great bang for your buck. If you're looking to have a great time at school then yes I would recommend it. If you are looking to create a good network to help you through life, then not really because it's a state school.
Program Reputation8I hear the business school is highly ranked in the state of New York. It was very competitive while I attended the university. Not everyone was admitted to the business school.
Program Quality7College prepares you for the world. It helps you build new relationships and teaches you how to live on your own.
Instruction5The professors at the university were average. I do not recall having any overly satisfying intellectual relationships with any of my professors.
How Difficult7Economics is a program of study that requires more thought and application than most. I found my economics classes much more difficult than my business ones.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe university was not hands-on at all. Students were left to fend for themselves in almost every category.
Schedule Flexibility8I was able to take classes when I wanted. I was always first in line when it was my turn to register.
Academic Facilities6Professors were available during office hours when posted. The school facilities always left something to be desired.
Social Life8Socially the school was above par, there were fraternities and sororities, athletic and arts programs. Social events were always plentiful and I participated to the best of my ability.
Placement Services8They did have on-campus recruiting. I did participate and landed a job from the program right out of school.
Alumni Network8The alumni network has gotten more and more organized since I graduated. When I was there it was non existent.

Strayer University • Buffalo, NY
Studying MBA (completion in 2011)

3/4/2012

"It was long and expensive to get an MBA. I have not seen any advancement from it yet."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesIt is not a bad thing to be educated. It is a bad thing to have school loans. You need to take the good with the bad.
Program Reputation5Strayer does mostly business degrees. They are ok. I have no real-world comparisons.
Program Quality8The degree program was fine; I had no complaints. Strayer is an ok school, although having done both, I feel that online schools are more difficult, as you are largely on your own.
Instruction9The teachers are really just monitors who set goals. You are mostly on your own.
How Difficult5I would say it was more difficult than my bachelor's, because it was online. Everything was a research paper; even math classes. That gets tedious.
Hands-On vs. BookishYou use the book, the online course, and the internet to learn. But not the teacher.
Schedule Flexibility10Online schools mean you do it whenever you want, so flexibility is a major selling point, along with not having to find parking.
Academic FacilitiesStrayer did not offer the typical resources and facilities. It would be difficult to offer them with distance learning.
Social LifeStrayer did not offer social activities; it would be difficult with distance learning.
Placement ServicesI have not taken advantage of this. I do not see it being useful.
Alumni NetworkI do not have any experience with the alumni network. I doubt I would use it. It has limited value in an online school.

Kaplan • Online Based, NY
Studying Business Management (completion in 2010)

3/4/2012

"I found the experience fulfilling and entertaining. The structure of my courses was very well planned out and I enjoyed that."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI know a lot of stay-at-home parents who want to further their education, and this would make that possible. Being able to attend school from home has great benefits.
Program Reputation9They have currently expanded locally and have actual schools you can attend. Their programs have expanded, and I believe they have made course adjustments for a better education opportunity.
Program Quality8At the time I was going to Kaplan, they were not local yet, so I never got to see anyone face to face. The education was great, though, and I felt relaxed about being able to do my work from home.
Instruction8The schooling focused on many traits that I needed to learn as a business professional. I had classes like psychology, which seemed very odd at the time, but now makes complete sense when I work with the public.
How Difficult8The tests were very self-explanatory, as long as you read your books and did the homework. I was very pleased with the test-taking process and got very good grades.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was very book related. We were given books to read and review, and at the end, there was a test.
Schedule Flexibility10You could work at home and at your own pace. I don't think you could ask for anything more flexible than that.
Academic Facilities9They had a great online library that you could use as a reference. But with no facilities at the time, this was a huge letdown to me.
Social Life2There really was no social experience, since everything was online. The only time I got to talk to other students was during online group classes.
Placement Services7They didn't really help place me at all. I found and created my own business and run all the operations myself. I am pleased with the results and now have a very strong work ethic.
Alumni NetworkI was not aware of any alumni, since it was a school-at-home opportunity. I missed not being able to socialize and communicate with people on a daily basis.

SUNY Brockport • Brockport, NY
Studying Communications (completion in 1995)

3/6/2012

"I wish I was a better student or knew more of what I wanted at the time, so I had better knowledge of what I wanted to do."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noI think there are more specialized schools out there.
Program Reputation5I am really not sure. It is a state school, so not too bad.
Program Quality4I don't think it had the best overarching reach to help me discover the many jobs out there. It didn't give me all the strengths I would need.
Instruction7They had good instructors. I think the business side at the school was much better, but I wasn't really into learning it at the time. I wish I did now!
How Difficult6A few teachers would give you good grades if you had them more than once.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was all book then.
Schedule Flexibility5I always got the classes I wanted.
Academic FacilitiesThey were OK at the time. I don't really remember much of them.
Social Life10They had snow most of the year and they knew how to keep busy indoors!
Placement Services9They were very helpful with job searches. It is too far to go there now.
Alumni NetworkI haven't been active. I really didn't want anything to do with the school after I left.

Utica College Of Syracuse University • Utica, NY
Studying Criminal Justice/Economic Crime Investigation/Financial Investigation (completion in 2006)

3/10/2012

"I was very satisfied with the school."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesYes, they offer a handful of programs that can definitely lead to a career in sales.
Program Reputation8It is a very popular program since there are only a limited number of schools that offer this program.
Program Quality9It was a great program, and the professors were in the Criminal Justice field, giving the students insight that was relevant to our career paths.
Instruction8The professor's had several years of experience, and were able to provide us with examples from real life events.
How Difficult7The accounting course was more difficult, but the program overall was pretty straightforward.
Hands-On vs. BookishI would have to say that we had a share of both, and in the program we had a fair share of hands on experience, which made the program rather interesting for me.
Schedule Flexibility5There were several courses that were only offered once a year, making it difficult to graduate on time.
Academic Facilities8Everything was fairly good. I have no complaints.
Social Life10I miss my college days. It was very interesting, and an integral part of my growing up.
Placement Services1I had no support from the department, and ended up pursuing an entirely different career path from what I majored in.
Alumni Network2I have not been in contact with the school since my graduation, and have not received any mail.

SUNY Potsdam • Potsdam, NY
Studying English/Education K-9 (completion in 1995)

3/25/2012

"For what I wanted to study, my budget, and the available funds in my family, the school was perfect. If I were to go back to school today to study something more directly related to what I am doing today (sales), I would look for a business school, not a liberal arts college."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noI would recommend it for someone looking for a broad educational experience, but not someone looking for a business degree. The curriculum, facilities, and community exposure for sales/business just aren't strong enough.
Program Reputation6They are still well known as an Education major's school and respected in the SUNY system.
Program Quality9My school was a liberal arts college and while Education isn't the field I entered, they are an exceptional place to study for the field. In addition, the English program has provided me with some great skills for my current profession.
Instruction8Many of the instructors were very dedicated to their students and didn't carry the pretentiousness of the larger universities. In addition, the one on one access was better than at the larger universities.
How Difficult7I thought it was pretty balanced. There were some semesters that I thought were unbalanced, but overall there was never a semester that made you feel like you needed to quit school because it was just too hard.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe school was in a small town and while there were practicums, there was a limited amount of space in the community to assist in getting the hands on learning. Like any other university they did offer internships, etc and that was helpful.
Schedule Flexibility7They worked diligently to make sure you could meet degree requirements in a reasonable amount of time. If classes were full, they had solutions.
Academic Facilities5I have certainly been to universities that had larger facilities and resources, but the school was not privately funded and relied heavily on tax dollars.
Social Life7We never hurt for recreational activities. There was a small greek community, athletic program, etc. We were in a town with 3 other universities, so there were lots of opportunities for cross promotional activities.
Placement Services4No one assisted. We got reviews of our ability to graduate, but there was nothing else beyond that.
Alumni Network1Unfortunately, I have had no communication from the school since graduation... not even to ask for donations to an alumni fund, etc.

Nazareth College • Rochester, NY
Studying History (completion in 2006)

4/6/2012

"I feel that I developed a lot as a person and learned facts and ideas that influenced me. However, I still wish someone had given me more career/post-college planning."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noIf someone wants to go into sales and needs a degree I would suggest a community or state college. Also, a business or administration degree would be more useful than a history degree.
Program Reputation8In the area, it is highly regarded in humanities/liberal arts. Most of the students go on to be teachers, however.
Program Quality8I loved the History program at Naz. Unfortunately, I hoped to do something other than manage a retail location with it.
Instruction6Great content/amount learned. However, poor career preparation (no one ever discussed what I could/should do with a History degree).
How Difficult5I have a good memory and strong retention for facts, so the History content wasn't too hard. I did not feel unduly burdened with work (reading or writing).
Hands-On vs. BookishI was a history major, so it was all book learning. No hands on content.
Schedule Flexibility5Class scheduling seemed normal, comparable to what my friends at other schools had available. Day/evening classes mostly offered.
Academic Facilities8A great library and media center. Classrooms were a bit out of date at the time.
Social Life5I had a lot of fun and met people. I did live off campus so I was also able to meet people from the Rochester area, not just fellow students.
Placement Services1As mentioned earlier, poor career preparation (no one ever discussed what I could/should do with a History degree). Very little contact after graduation other than asking for money.
Alumni Network4I only took advantage of the alumni network once. The job I was interviewed for did not work out.

Hobart College • Geneva, NY
Studying Economics (completion in 2011)

4/12/2012

"Great overall education and atmosphere. Would go back again if I could!"

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesHobart has great connections in my particular business. Will be very helpful down the road when I'm looking to switch to another company.
Program Reputation10Economics program at Hobart is known as one of the best. It's very competitive and attracts employers from many different industries.
Program Quality10Hobart is a very strong liberal arts college. I received a top notch education in my four years there.
Instruction10Can't say I ever had a bad teacher. All professors were heavily involved in classroom instruction.
How Difficult8Very in-depth theory classes. I felt the work load was significantly more than peers at other institutions.
Hands-On vs. BookishGood balance between the two. Did many tasks that fall under each classification.
Schedule Flexibility10I was always able to get the courses I wanted. Also at the times I wanted.
Academic Facilities10State of the art Bloomberg terminals in Econ lab. Always plenty of space in rooms/library.
Social Life10Great bar scene downtown. Always plenty to do on campus as well.
Placement Services5Already stated in regards to alumni network, career services office could be run much more efficiently. They make too many empty promises.
Alumni Network5Alumni network is very strong. However, career services office is very weak; there could be a much stronger bridge between the two if that office was run more efficiently.
