University Of Wisconsin Stout • Menomonie, WI
Studying Hospitality And Tourism Management (completion in 2011)

"My experience there was very rewarding and I was appreciative to find a school that specializes in my field of choice. Additionally the flexibility of the school allowed me to continue being employed full-time during my college years. Placement programs have been of assistance to me as well."

Would Recommend?yesI feel that the opportunities that my college presented to me was unparalleled by other schools in the area. I always felt like my program was a priority at the school and that it seemed to only improve the longer I attended. Additionally, the degree of acceptance of differences on the campus was refreshing.
Program Reputation10My college is ranked in the top five of among hotel schools in the country. They have a dedicated department and even a whole wing of the school dedicated to the hospitality program. Their technology exceeds other school's capabilities.
Program Quality9My college's program was extremely comprehensive and flexible to meet life's needs. My school was able to teach me things that I otherwise would not have known, and was able to give me the background to achieve more. I also liked the technology the school offered.
Instruction9The instructors were well matched for the program. Most of the instructors had actual industry experience or were heavily engaged in industry organizations and boards. The teachers seemed to care about what they were doing and enjoyed communicating their passions to the students.
How Difficult6I feel as though the difficulty of the program was about average. The workload was copious but not over the top. I feel like there were several challenging assignments, but nothing as tough as what a medical or engineering student might have to do.
Hands-On vs. BookishBecause of technology's role in the classroom, there wasn't much in the way of hands-on activities. Unfortunately, technology can be a bit distracting to personal interactions in the classroom.
Schedule Flexibility10Flexibility has been nothing short of amazing. In part, this is due to the fact that we are a polytechnic university which mean that every student carries a laptop to all classes. Due to the e-learning capabilities, students have more flexibility and don't have to be on campus regularly.
Academic Facilities7I feel that although the professors are wonderful, there weren't many tutors or study groups to speak of. With so many commuter students and with so much great technology, I don't feel like much bonding or teamwork happened outside of the classroom.
Social Life8There were always things to do once classes were over. I was very impressed to see that there was something to attend every night of the week. I also felt that there was a strong sense of cultural diversity and understanding of differences.
Placement Services9I was solicited with potential job opportunities no fewer than 10 times monthly . Additionally, my college offered career help courses, placement opportunities, and even a website that features my resume for future employers to view.
Alumni Network9The school's alumni network and support has been terrific. They have been in regular contact with me post-graduation and when I visit their offices, they are full of helpful people and opportunities to better yourself even further.

Studying Hotel & Restaurant Management (completion in 2010)

"I think that compared with other institutions, they did a wonderful job of keeping the classes relevant to the topics and in making them interesting most of the time. I appreciated the open door policy that the entire campus had. It made it less complicated to get important things done."

Would Recommend?yesYes, definitely. This school really was a premier option for anyone entering or continuing in the industry. Not only did they provide me with many of the tools necessary to do my job well, but they also created excitement for the learning process.
Program Reputation9Stout has been ranked in the top 10 hotel schools in the country by several known hospitality groups. Additionally, their dedicated school of hospitality provides them with a greater ability to recruit talented teachers.
Program Quality10Stout was the perfect place to learn because of their flexibility and because of the seemingly never ending resources they provided. The faculty was very experienced and most had worked in the hotel industry in the fields they were teaching.
Instruction10There are clear differences between instructors who teach simply based on book learning from those who have real world experience. I found the faculty at UW-Stout had an overwhelming amount of industry connections, advice, and helpful experience to share.
How Difficult7Although there are many complexities in the hotel industry to learn about, I do not feel that it exactly ranks up there with the challenging course work that a Doctor or Lawyer might endure. I did feel challenged while I attended, however.
Hands-On vs. BookishI felt like the campus did a good job of encouraging and mandating internships, providing credits in exchange for real-world experience, and keeping us active. Books were not frequently used in classes as demonstration is better.
Schedule Flexibility10I found that due to the "Polytechnic" status of the school, the online options ensure a largely flexible environment. Additionally, having no Friday classes was huge.
Academic Facilities8The school had a dedicated facility for my program which was amazing and convenient. An open door policy kept the teachers accessible and tutors were everywhere. I thought it was really great.
Social Life7I did notice that there were several email blasts and flyers encouraging students to participate in social activities. I don't remember an actual human person encouraging it, though.
Placement Services9From technology and online profiles with resumes to job fairs and career internships, Stout is a premier school in terms of offering opportunities for it's students to be employed. They are active in ensuring every student has a plethora of options to choose from.
Alumni Network7The alumni foundation has been excellent in communicating about several events and opportunities available to post grads. Additionally, they frequently notify me of scholarships and grants for continuing my education.

"I am rather impressed with WCTC. When I got accepted there I wasn't very excited as their acceptance rate is 100%, but my opinion changed very quickly after a couple of classes."

Would Recommend?yesLike I have stated before, the atmosphere is very mature with few distractions. The schedule is VERY flexible and the professors are very understanding.
Program Reputation10WCTC is very highly touted as the best Tech school in the state. Even out of state companies recognize WCTC.
Program Quality8WCTC has prepared me very well with what to expect.
Instruction8There was a lot of social interaction in our classes. It taught me a lot of communication skills.
How Difficult8The classes themselves were particularly simple. The homework load was the killer though, as we got A LOT of it.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt really depends on the class and the professor. I had one guy that would talk your ear off but the rest of the classes were mainly hands-on and social.
Schedule Flexibility10I was surprise at how flexible their schedule was. I could take the traditional day classes monday through Friday or take a night class on a Saturday.
Academic Facilities9The school's layout flows really well from building to building. The library holds a vast amount of resources that even connects to Wisconsin's Badger link network to get any article, book, or textbook for free in the state (to rent out at least).
Social Life5There is no on campus housing at WCTC, so compared to other universities, the "college life" isn't really there. It is a very mature atmosphere as a lot of the older crowd goes there. As far as athletics, it was all intramural leagues.
Placement Services9WCTC holds monthly job fairs. Like I said before, their job placement percentage is one of the best in the midwest.
Alumni Network8Their career placement percentage is one of the best in the state. WCTC is very highly touted for a technical college.

University Of Wisconsin-Milwaukee • Milwaukee, WI
Studying Museum Studies (completion in 2009)

1/16/2012

"I loved it. I wished there was a bit more socialness, but I can forgive that for the excellent education I received."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI certainly would for Art History and Museum Studies. While I ended up in sales, I did not major in it, which might be a flaw. However, my friend was a business major and absolutely loved the program.
Program Reputation10It is topnotch. Anyone who is looking to study art should consider UWM.
Program Quality10My Art and Museum degree from UWM was topnotch. The professors were extremely knowledgeable, and I learned so much from all of them.
Instruction10The instruction was topnotch. The professors were always there when I needed some help, and they were eager to further my knowledge.
How Difficult8Art History and Museum Studies require a lot of writing, research and memorization. The most difficult part was the memorization of names and dates.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt is a very big mix, depending on what classes you are in. My major had a bit of both.
Schedule Flexibility9UWM provides night, weekend, daytime, summer, and winter break classes. They are extremely flexible and fit almost any schedule.
Academic Facilities10Wonderful! There is always someone around to help you, and the Art History building always has famous artist works displayed.
Social Life2UWM is mostly a commuter school, and as a transfer student, it was very difficult to find people to talk to and make friends with! No football games to go to; everyone was fairly to themselves.
Placement ServicesI never made use of this program. It probably would have helped me out, though!
Alumni Network4The alumni support is fairly well known. I have not seen or heard any outstanding stories, but I see alumni shirts on campus often, so there is definitely a presence.

University Of Wisconsin • Madison, WI
Studying Business Organization (completion in 1981)

3/5/2012

"The academics, location of the school, social activities available, and placement opportunities after graduation could not have been better. I have two children attending the University of Wisconsin today (on my dime), so that should tell you what I think about UW."

Would Recommend?yesSchool offers a very wide range of majors. In addition, it is a Big 10 school, which many employers recognize as a great place to find young talent. In-state costs are about average, but you will get a great education that will serve you well as you grow in your career.
Program Reputation8Wisconsin is still noted for law and engineering, but the business major holds its own within the Big 10. The master's program is very well known in the business community.
Program Quality7My major was more involved with the organization of a business venture, not necessarily the sales side of a business. I would have liked to have seen a major dealing in sales, but not many colleges offer such a major, as it is a career that people gravitate into vs. training in school for.
Instruction9The University of Wisconsin is noted for law and engineering. I was fortunate enough to attend when the business department was in a growth mode, so I was able to interact with many excellent business professors.
How Difficult9The business courses themselves were not all that difficult. The difficulty came when we got into statistics in managerial accounting. Business Law and Ethics was another challenging course.
Hands-On vs. BookishI would say book and lecture were the main forms of schooling available. We did not do a lot of hands on until our junior year, when we had a chance to co-op. I was lucky enough to co-op with Oscar Meyer in Madison both my junior and senior years.
Schedule Flexibility8When I attended, evening classes were in the minority. Summer school offered a large selection of business classes, but online options were not available. I think Wisconsin offered as much as most any other school.
Academic Facilities10The facilities in the business school were outstanding. Every type of resource needed to do reports, prepare projects, etc., was available on campus. Faculty advisors were experts in their fields.
Social Life10Anyone attending a Big 10 school will tell you the opportunities to party, drink beer and eat brats at the University of Wisconsin are numerous. Athletics when I attended were getting better, as Barry Alvarez had just arrived. Madison is known as Madtown for a good reason.
Placement Services10The placement office does an outstanding job of bringing employers and graduates together. The number of on-campus interviews is only limited by the graduate's school and work schedules. I landed my first job out of college as the result of an on-campus interview.
Alumni Network10The alumni network at Wisconsin is very, very large. If you want to get involved with some sort of trip or adventure, the alumni department is most likely a place to start looking for a good deal.

University Of Wisconsin-Eau Claire • Eau Claire, WI
Studying English Creative Writing (completion in 2008)

4/12/2012

"I think that if I would have looked a little more I would have found a better school. I am not completely unsatisfied with my choice, but if I had to do it over again I would chose somewhere differently."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noThere are a number of schools in the relative area that are comparable in many ways that would be better options. People should know all of their options.
Program Reputation3It is not known for my major. It does have a good program, but not excellent.
Program Quality1My university did not have realistic representations of what sales actually is. I think they could have been more up front with their programs to give us a better chance at making better decisions.
Instruction5They had good programs and teachers. They however did not have great real world examples and experiences to help.
How Difficult3The homework and required learning was not that difficult or challenging. It was a lot of busy work.
Hands-On vs. BookishI think this was a mix. It depended on the class and the professor mostly.
Schedule Flexibility3It was not a big school, so the class flexibility was not great. There was not a whole lot of variety.
Academic Facilities5They had them available. They were not well documented or advertised, so it was not the easiest to use.
Social Life5I was a part of an organization through the school. It was a good experience.
Placement ServicesI didn't use their Career Services. I found a job on my own.
Alumni Network2I only get an online newsletter from them. I wouldn't have any connection except for a Facebook group.
