"I am very satisfied with Rutgers and have few complaints. My experience has been pleasant and enriching, and I also feel a great certainty that my degree at the end of my educational study, is going to be sought after and valuable for many years to come."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | yes | Yes, because they would find everything they need to get both quality preparation, and in-dept specialization. Starting from their junior year, they would be able to exercise a great amount of control over their chosen curriculum. There is great opportunity for independent pursuits, with a nice balance of support systems in the event you get in over your head. |
| Program Reputation | 10 | Rutgers is considered a well-spring of educational research, analysis, and program development. It also has an international presence abroad, which the American campuses greatly benefit from, with a wide variety of exposure to different schools of educational thought. |
| Program Quality | 10 | Rutgers has a teaching staff that is varied and well-experienced. Many of them have been published several times, and a very high percentage of them are considered experts in their fields on a national, and sometimes international level. |
| Instruction | 8 | I would have liked to have had access to more independent study programs and opportunities to alter my curriculum. As a state school, Rutgers has many state and federal guidelines they must satisfy in their Education curriculum. Once they are fulfilled, only then can you start developing your own independent course of study and interest. |
| How Difficult | 9 | I am pursuing my Master's degree right now, and many of the classes are basic and foundational reviews. I have been told that as I progress through the program the offerings will be more broad and challenging. I have spoken to several fellow students, who verify that, so I am not too concerned about my course work remaining relatively mundane, as it is now. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | This is almost an equal mix, although often, especially early in your major, there is an emphasis on one approach or the other, and not the intense integration you often find at higher levels. The clinical opportunities are excellent, and the resources as far as laboratory and clinical facilities, are excellent, also. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 10 | Rutgers is extremely flexible, and innovative in class offerings, and venues for completing course work. All of the above mentioned - evening, weekends, summer and online - are available, as well as programs abroad, interrupted sessions without penalty, and moving from and within departments without loss of credit hours. |
| Academic Facilities | 10 | Rutgers has extraordinary, often state-of-the-art academic resources. These range from excellent libraries and vast reference materials, online national and international programs, closed conferencing between student and professor, and easily accessible tutorials and one-on-one support. Their clinical and laboratory facilities are also excellent. |
| Social Life | 10 | I love Rutgers. It has a hometown feel to it, and a great influx of international students and professors as well. There are too many social events and groups to ever experience them all completely, and there is a real northeastern camaraderie amongst the students and faculty. |
| Placement Services | 8 | I have not really had the need to avail myself of these as of yet, as I plan to proceed through to my Doctorate in Education. However, I know many individuals who were able to secure jobs, which were both interesting and well paying, even in the current economic downturn. |
| Alumni Network | 5 | I have not had a lot of interactions with any alumni groups. Rutgers is a highly-competitive sports-oriented school, and many, many alumni programs are focused on Athletics. There may be many other aspects of the Alumni Programs, however, and I am simply unaware of them. |
