Would Recommend?yesIt is a good school for many majors, education especially. Compared to some other schools in the state, it is very affordable.
Program Reputation10Education is the most popular major at the college I attended. The school is very well known for graduating exceptional educators.
Program Quality5I graduated without much difficulty. It was a small school, and opportunities and choices were limited.
Instruction8Professors were well prepared. The small school environment allowed for closer relationships with faculty members.
How Difficult5Workload was not overwhelming. I would have preferred to be challenged more.
Hands-On vs. BookishInstructors use current texts. Most classes are lecture based.
Schedule Flexibility10School offers night classes in a variety of subjects. The Maine university system also offers online classes from other campuses.
Academic Facilities9Facilities are becoming somewhat rundown in areas. Technology resources are adequate and up to date.
Social LifeI didn't live on campus. As a commuter student, I didn't participate in many on-campus activities.
Placement ServicesI did not utilize these opportunities.
Alumni Network5I am not very involved in the alumni activities. The alumni organization is very active, though.

Bowdoin College • Brunswick, ME
Studying Biology (completion in 2000)

"I feel like I got a great education and was able to make great and lasting friends. Bowdoin has a lot of prestige and my degree seems to be meaningful to others, which has been helpful a few times. I have taken many of the lessons I learned there with me and use them in my everyday life."

Would Recommend?yesI think that Bowdoin provides a great education in a small environment. Anyone wishing to be a high school teacher would do well at Bowdoin by majoring in their desired field and minoring in education.
Program Reputation10Bowdoin is always top in the nation's college rankings. It has a very high acceptance rate for graduate programs, and almost all of the people I know who attended are very successful in their careers.
Program Quality10Bowdoin College is a small liberal arts institute where I was able to receive a wonderful education. Although I do not work in a field related to my major, I feel that I learned how to think critically and that I gained a tremendous amount of skills and knowledge from my college education.
Instruction10Almost all of my professors really cared about their students and were extremely knowledgeable and accomplished in their fields. The intimate relationships between the professors and students allowed for a tremendous amount of teaching and personal growth.
How Difficult10In our entire class of over four-hundred students, only one was able to maintain a 4.0 GPA for the entire four years. I always had a considerable workload, and I had very challenging and exciting classes.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe had many labs and field trips with our classes. I had one ecology class where we went on a different field trip every week. It was an amazing opportunity.
Schedule Flexibility3At the time I attended Bowdoin, class flexibility was nothing like it is today. We had few evening classes, no summer offerings, and online learning hadn't really started yet. Many classes were only offered during one timeslot per semester or even once a year.
Academic Facilities10Bowdoin had excellent libraries and many computer labs. I never had trouble finding a computer to work on. Science laboratories were superb and there was a lot of advanced equipment available to students.
Social Life5There were a number of organized social events and a lot of parties. I did have trouble fitting in for the first year, because I was not particularly athletic or into partying. Also, I was from a very different social class and upbringing from many of the students.
Placement Services8Most of my classmates left college with a job or plans for graduate school in the fall. I did not use the career services much, simply because I had no idea what I wanted to do after graduation. However, at the time, there seemed to be a large amount of resources available.
Alumni Network8Bowdoin does a lot with the alumni, or at least I believe so. I have not taken advantage of many of the opportunities, nor do I know much about other school alumni networks to compare. I am basing this on the number of invitations and emails I get inviting me to various events.
