"I absolutely loved my experience there! As a matter of fact, my husband and I will be returning to that school to obtain our Master's degree in education."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

Would Recommend?yesI think that the program is excellent for inspiring teachers. They will have all the resources and support needed to succeed in the classroom.
Program Reputation8I have heard great things about the education program from other school districts. The most common comment is that Southwestern's education grads are better prepared for their first day than any other grad.
Program Quality10I had an awesome experience. All of my professors where extremely helpful not only during my student teaching but also after I graduated. I can still call them up today and ask questions and they are more than willing to help me out.
Instruction8I felt pretty will prepared for my first year. There were a few things that I did not know what to do that we did not talk about in college but that is were I could call professors or ask my mentor teacher. Overall I felt well prepared.
How Difficult8Both the education and history side of the program was pretty intense. I found myself having to work extremely hard on assignments and studying for tests just to get an A.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe did a lot of observations of classes in our field. We also did a lot of creating our own lesson plans, teaching that lesson to our classmates ad then hearing a critique. We also did a lot of research on different techniques to use in the classroom. Overall I think I only had to buy two education books.
Schedule Flexibility8I like the flexibility of being able to plan longer vacations to see family and friends earlier. I like that realistically it is a set schedule. And I know what to expect.
Academic Facilities10There is a computer lab in each building. The library's hours were great. All of the faculty and staff across campus were more than willing to help us find what we needed to succeed in the classroom. The professors/advisors were always easy to get a hold of and kept good office hours. There were several study groups to go to and tutors were there when scheduled.
Social Life10I was involved in History Club and intramural sports. Those were what I participated the most in. I also attended social events that my dorm hosted.
Placement Services9They did a great job in helping us locate openings as well as making sure our resumes were in order before we sent them out. They also followed up with us on whether we had found jobs or if there was anything else they could do to help us.
Alumni Network10They are extremely supportive, especially in helping alumni to find jobs. They regularly see if everything is going well or if there is anything that they can do to help us.

Studying Master Of Education (completion in 2006)

"I have attended five colleges in Oklahoma, and OSU was by far the most outstanding in terms of instruction. There were problems with the school growing in the Tulsa area and having classes offered only at one campus."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThe Master's program is intense and OSU covered all the bases I needed as I progressed. This could make the difference for some students.
Program Reputation9The ALA rating makes the school stand out and the quality of the professors and instruction are exceptional.
Program Quality10Oklahoma State has certification from the American Libraries Association for the degree I received which makes it a very qualified school.
Instruction9Much of what is taught in the university is theory and all the theory cannot prepare a teacher for the daily existence within the classroom.
How Difficult5I think the amount of study and degree of difficulty was average. I am aware that some students were not able to achieve the results needed to pass classes and that others excelled, which is to be expected.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe instruction was theory oriented, which came through the text. But, the text was supported by projects, like portfolios and internships, that created hands on work.
Schedule Flexibility8OSU is above average in offering classes for people who have full time jobs. They are flexible in their scheduling.
Academic Facilities8All of the things mentioned are offered and are above average in quality but may not be listed as exceptional.
Social Life5OSU has an active social scene, but I was not very involved. It could be that that was because there was not much offered to people who have full time day jobs and attend online or at night.
Placement Services8The career department is very active and even though I have not used the services, I am aware that they are available.
Alumni Network8The alumni network at OSU is very good, but I believe they could have more outreach to people who may not respond to initial inquires.

"I am satisfied. I got an education, which led to a job, and I formed many great friendships."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeMy school doesn't specialize in either education or English, but it seemed to work for me and I enjoyed it. I wouldn't send a blanket endorsement, but I'd definitely talk to them about it.
Program Reputation6My school was known for its agriculture programs. I got a good education, but it isn't something people think of for my school.
Program Quality5My major was a way to get a job. I specialized in English and I no longer do that; however, my school did a good job and I loved my education.
Instruction7I had good teachers. They taught me well. The education portion didn't prepare me for the classroom well.
How Difficult5It was a lot of writing. Writing comes easily to me.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was mostly book. However, as a person looking to teach English, I'm not sure that's a bad thing.
Schedule Flexibility7It seemed to work. It's been a long time.
Academic Facilities5The education wing was good. The people there were helpful.
Social Life7I don't know that it was so much the school and things it did, but I had good times. I still have some great friendships from it.
Placement Services7They helped me get a job. I'm still there, thirteen years later.
Alumni NetworkI don't pay much attention to it. My school was great, but I don't live close enough to have much dealing with it.

"I am very satisfied with my college, and I am also satisfied with my own teaching school. Because I remain a bit confused, I will answer to both to help."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesAgain, I am a bit confused as to whether you are asking about my own career, or a student who wants to pursue an English Education at my school. I am only clarifying this so that it might help you. But yes, I would recommend my college and my high school to perspective students.
Program Reputation8I may not be the best person to answer this, but I feel like from what I read, the school's English/Education department have a respected reputation. I think they are known as quality departments.
Program Quality8I believe that our department is very strong, but as with any department, there are areas where we could improve. Overall, I would say we are preparing our students.
Instruction8Overall, I believe the teachers provide quality instruction. I do find this question rather confusing, as I'm not sure if this has to do with the quality of instruction at my own school, or the quality of instruction at my own college.
How Difficult9While I do love literature, my workload was heavy. It involved many hours of reading and writing. However, I did enjoy it.
Hands-On vs. BookishMy area of study has a lot of book-time, as I teach literature. We spend a great amount of time reading and spending time in the text.
Schedule Flexibility10Flexibility was a plus at my school. Many classes were available for me to choose from. We also have many choices at my teaching school.
Academic Facilities5My own school (if that is what you mean) does have adequate technology and resources, but we are in need of more. Financial stresses do limit this area.
Social Life7I am going to assume you mean the school where I teach. We have a very good extra curricular program, but I believe we should continue to grow.
Placement Services8When I was at the school, we had an excellent career center. I can not speak for them now, but I would assume that program would continue to thrive.
Alumni Network10I am sent regular updates and information from OU. I also still get regular phone calls from the university. I feel like I am able to keep up with the school's growth.
