"I obtained the education I desired. I have the career I desired."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noThe education department is currently prohibited from giving degrees. They do not meet state requirements.
Program Reputation7It's only a C school. Psych is respected but Philosophy may be phased out.
Program Quality9While there are schools that will provide more prestige I received an education from professors that attended Ivy League schools. Both programs were complete and challenging.
Instruction10My professors have real world experience and shared it willingly with me. They have continued to be supportive after I've completed my degree.
How Difficult9My college allows entrance to C students. I however studied in strict disciplines that didn't allow for slacking.
Hands-On vs. BookishI sought programs outside of my academic learning to provide me with hands on training. That is other than what was required.
Schedule Flexibility4There aren't enough degree oriented classes outside standard class times. I did complete a few evening classes for my degree, but summer consisted mostly of General Education classes.
Academic Facilities10Their library was extensive and to me seemed quite complete. In addition to what we had on hand we had access to materials from all UW schools.
Social Life10We have an amazing activities director, and could find many things to do in a week if not a day. Additionally, organizational involvement was quite high.
Placement Services7My professors have been of more use that any special program UWP provides. I haven't even used their services as I had no results.
Alumni Network6The program at my school wasn't stellar. However my professors have made up for it.

University Of Wisconsin Madison • Madison, WI
Studying Secondary Education - English (completion in 2012)

11/5/2011

"I wouldn't have gone anywhere else. I'm glad I came here."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesIt's rigorous, but worth it.
Program Reputation9It is one of the best in the nation. It is also a highly desirable degree.
Program Quality7It is one of the highest rated in the nation. But the people running the program aren't always on top of their game.
Instruction8The information was helpful. The instructors fell flat at times.
How Difficult8They keep you busy with coursework, projects, and readings. On top of that, you are student teaching.
Hands-On vs. BookishThey had us read a lot, but we also spent a lot of time trying to apply that information.
Schedule Flexibility6Once you are in the program, you are on a strict route of classes. It is a hassle to change anything outside of what they want you to do.
Academic Facilities10Some of the best libraries and staff in the world.
Social Life9I was in a Greek organization and fairly social. Madison has a great social scene as well.
Placement Services9They offer job fairs and portfolio assistance.
Alumni NetworkI don't know, honestly.

Wisconsin Lutheran College • Milwaukee, WI
Studying Spanish Certification (completion in 2011)

"My previous college experience was much better. The education department was on top of things, very compassionate (as were all faculty and staff), and provided a quality education."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noMy second college combined too much general, philosophical ideology into my educational experience, which wasn't useful. In addition, it has a strong Christian focus, something this isn't welcome in public schools and is a waste of time.
Program Reputation7In regard to public schools, there is no opinion. However, my school's education program looks amazing to private Lutheran schools, especially those that are WELS, because the students receive religious training as well.
Program Quality7This is the second school I went to, and I feel like there was more emphasis on busywork. My methods course was also not a foreign language-specific one and included other subject areas. As a result, I feel that I did not receive as good of training as I could have.
Instruction7My methods course was more of a general focus than a specific one. The college is also a Christian school, and I felt it tried to emphasis that too much, particularly within the field of education.
How Difficult7It was difficult for me, because I had the majority of my educational training at a previous college, so the methods/teaching styles were different. I also didn't get very much support from the administration or the faculty.
Hands-On vs. BookishAn education program has to have a mix, at least in my state. A state-mandated component of teacher education is the process of creating lesson plans and completing clinical hours.
Schedule Flexibility1Flexible options were a joke. I went to this school as a post-baccalaureate student and had no options but to attend day classes with other students. I was never offered independent studies or online courses.
Academic Facilities5The library was rather small (it is a small school). Professors were available at times, but you could never be sure. They has specific office hours; with education professors, they cannot always keep to their office hours though, because they have to do clinical observations.
Social Life5I never participated in any school events. I did, however, receive several campus-wide emails, and events were a big occurrence. Along with things like movies and game nights, chapel services were held every day.
Placement Services1As far as know, they do not exist. For private Lutheran schools, you do not apply to jobs; you are "called" to the position (meaning invited).
Alumni NetworkHonestly, I wouldn't know much about it, as I choose not to participate in anything relating to this school's alumni. I do occasionally get emails asking for prayer requests.

University Of Wisconsin - La Crosse • La Crosse, WI
Studying EA- EA-A English Education (completion in 2010)

"I loved UWL and wouldn't trade my experience there for anything. I am so glad that I chose to go to UWL. I felt extremely prepared, and so far, things have been going very well for me as a high school teacher."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI don't think there is anywhere else in WI where you can get as good of an education in education as you get at UWL. It's affordable, excellent, and relevant.
Program Reputation10When I entered college, before I had gotten into the education program, the WI Department of Education came in to audit the program. They found some major things that were lacking, and they worked with UWL on fixing those things. By the time I was in the program and the makeover was finished, the DPI said UWL had one of the best and most relevant programs in the Midwest.
Program Quality10I felt extremely prepared when I left college. My college prepared me for a lot of the up-and-coming trends, like PLCs and RTI. I couldn't have asked for more.
Instruction10I had friends from other colleges who had never heard of PLCs before, and that absolutely floored me. UWL has an excellent, relevant program.
How Difficult8It wasn't so difficult that I couldn't complete it to the best of my ability. It did, however, challenge me to think outside the box, which is really what I need to do as a teacher.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere was a mix of hands-on and book learning, but I would say it would lean towards more hands on. There were a few textbooks we used, and of course I used a ton of books in the English portion, but we would read just a little and then do something to get the point across.
Schedule Flexibility8I think we had a pretty good mix of evening and summer offerings. I don't really think we had any weekend options. I would have liked to have seen more online options.
Academic Facilities8The one thing I would like to see changed at UWL is to include more of the newest educational technology in the education classrooms. There were no smart boards for us to learn to work with, or anything along those lines. I learned to use those things through my cooperating teachers at the K12 schools I did my field work at.
Social Life8I had a great time at college, participating in athletic events and social events. I would have liked to have seen the school come together more over football games and basketball games, like they do at the bigger schools.
Placement Services5We had a great career services department, but there wasn't really any job placement help. They told us what websites to look at, but then we were pretty much left to ourselves.
Alumni Network10I joined the alumni group after graduation, and I receive e-mails and updates from them regularly. I have yet to attend a meeting, but the magazine and e-mails I receive have been very helpful in keeping me connected to my college.

Concordia University Wisconsin • Mequon, WI
Studying Education (completion in 2014)

11/28/2011

"I was satisfied, because the program was flexible to meet my needs as a working adult. I learned a lot from the way the program was set up, with book learning and hands-on learning."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThe program worked well for me and would for most working adults. However, it is relatively expensive, and you have to be a self-starter and be self-motivated to successfully get through it.
Program Reputation8I have only heard good things about the program. It is very flexible and works for working adults. It is a bit on the expensive side, though.
Program Quality8I learned everything I needed to, to be a successful teacher. However, there are so many things I did not know about dealing with (parents, administrators, etc.), that I wish I had known.
Instruction9There was a great deal of hands-on experience, which I found to be very beneficial. The instructors did not just teach from books, but more so from real-life scenarios.
How Difficult8The assignments and expectations were challenging; however, there was a great deal of support by instructors and professors. The work was not easy, but it was nothing I couldn't handle.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere were many hands-on experiences that were very beneficial and useful. There was also a great deal of book learning, which I felt was also important. The balance was very good.
Schedule Flexibility10Classes were offered online and in the summers on campus. They were very willing to work with working adults as far as practicums and internships went.
Academic Facilities6There were adequate resources and equipment. However, there could have been more, and what was available was not as updated as it could have been.
Social Life7There were opportunities to socialize. There was pretty good diversity. There were not a lot of students, so opportunities were fairly limited.
Placement Services8They gave me ideas on where to look for jobs. They followed up once, to find out what I was doing.
Alumni Network5I don't know anything specifically about an alumni network. However, if I contacted the school, I am sure they could help me if I needed it.

University Of Wisconsin - Oshkosh • Oshkosh, WI
Studying Education (completion in 2009)

12/3/2011

"I am very satisfied with where UW Oshkosh led me and the quality of education I received. I wish I had chosen a larger school with more school spirit to add to my social enjoyment of college."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThe quality of education is awesome at UW Oshkosh. I received a top-notch education that made me well prepared for my career. Also, Oshkosh is reasonably priced, which is great for students like me who had to pay their own tuition and work full time while going to school.
Program Reputation10UW Oshkosh always passes its accreditation with flying colors. Its graduates are known as competent, well prepared, hard workers, and they are highly sought after.
Program Quality8UW Oshkosh has a great reputation and a great degree program. I feel as though I was well educated and well prepared for my career as an educator at the high school level. Personally, I wish I had chosen a larger school. I prefer big cities and all they have to offer. Oshkosh was too small for me.
Instruction10The program was extremely well designed, and if there were any issues, administrators and academic advisers were right there to guide you through it. I felt extremely well prepared when I graduated.
How Difficult5I chose average, because for me, it was very easy. I have always been blessed with a sharp mind and the ability to understand concepts and coursework easily. The program was easy for me, because it is something I was interested in and loved. When speaking to my peers who attended other colleges, it seemed very comparable to their workload.
Hands-On vs. BookishUW Oshkosh did a nice job of mixing hands-on experience with book learning. In education, you learn that hands-on experience is essential to the learning process, and our education was no different.
Schedule Flexibility5UW Oshkosh's flexibility was nothing special. It offers what every other school offers.
Academic Facilities7There was a lot of assistance; you just had to go find it. Being a smaller school, accessibility isn't as easily affordable as it is to a larger school, as far as tutors and laboratories go.
Social Life1I'm a huge football fan. I should have chosen a larger school with a better football team. No one tailgated and no one cared about homecoming. School spirit was pretty much nonexistent at UWO.
Placement Services8Oshkosh made it extremely easy to receive job placement and career help. You just had to go there and do the work!
Alumni Network1I rated the alumni network extremely poor, because it is nonexistent; or, if it does exist, they like to remain difficult to contact or find. That is somewhat disappointing, really.

University Of Wisconsin-Milwaukee • Milwaukee, WI
Studying Music Education (completion in 2006)

1/17/2012

"I would not change much about my schooling and enrollment. Overall, I was very satisfied with the things the school offered and provided."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI would recommend UWM, but I would encourage other teachers to take advantage of the opportunities provided beyond classroom learning. There is something to be said for experiencing all a campus has to offer.
Program Reputation6I have not heard anything good nor bad about UWM's music program. Given that I have not heard anything either way, I would rate it slightly above average.
Program Quality10I was provided with course instruction that was tailored to what I was currently doing in my job. My professors were very flexible with my current work schedule and graduate class load.
Instruction9All of the courses I was required to take were directly applicable to teaching high school instrumentalists. The master's program I was enrolled in was meant to build on undergraduate knowledge and work experience; this adds considerably to my knowledge.
How Difficult5I believe that musical ability is a talent, and sometimes, it is easier to complete work in something that you are already talented in. Much of the coursework was experience-based and performance-based, and I consider this easier than paperwork and written tests.
Hands-On vs. BookishMusic education requires both textbook-based and performance-based learning. UWM did a nice job of providing a balance of both styles of learning.
Schedule Flexibility10UWM's Master of Music program is designed to meet the needs of teachers already in the field. I was able to complete coursework solely in the evenings and summers, while continuing to work two hours away.
Academic Facilities10I was pleased with the resources and facilities at UWM. I was able to experience the majority of the campus and did not find anything lacking.
Social LifeSince I was only able to attend evening and summer classes, I felt I missed out on the social aspect of graduate school. Given another opportunity, I would have enrolled as a full-time student, to experience the rich social culture of the campus.
Placement ServicesI haven't had any experience with UWM's job placement programs. Most master's program participants already have a job and are just supplementing their knowledge and credits towards pay.
Alumni Network4Since graduating, I have not received anything from the alumni network. While attending UWM, I did not learn about or receive information about future programs with alumni or support from alumni.

University Of Wisconsin - Madison • Madison, WI
Studying English (completion in 2003)

1/12/2012

"I am very happy with my school. It was a good value. I met a ton of great teachers."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThe location of the school is not expensive. You will most likely get a job if you graduate from Madison.
Program Reputation8It has a very good reputation among schools in Wisconsin. It is also known nationally for turning out well-rounded graduates.
Program Quality6The instruction was good. I had a lot of real-world teaching experience before graduating.
Instruction8My teachers loved what they were doing. They imparted to me the value of educating the next generation.
How Difficult5I was told that it was harder to study to get an MA here than at the University of Illinois - Urbana, which is the other school that I considered. Some of the tests were difficult and subjective.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe did some stints in local Madison schools. Some students also served at underprivileged schools in Milwaukee.
Schedule Flexibility6During my third year, I had trouble scheduling classes. Briefly, I had considerable trouble signing up for some necessary classes, and I almost had to delay graduation.
Academic Facilities8The gym and lunchroom were great. The library was also very well stocked and spacious.
Social Life10I went to parties every weekend. I met people from all over the country.
Placement Services8I was assigned a counselor and I got a lot of help. I am gainfully employed now without trouble.
Alumni Network5There are many teachers around Wisconsin who went to the same program I did.

University Of Wisconsin-Green Bay • Green Bay, WI
Studying Major In Biology, Minor In Secondary Education (completion in 2007)

2/9/2012

"I had a great time and I learned a lot of good information there. I would go there again if I had to choose."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesIt is a great school for education. The small setting in very nice.
Program Reputation8Green Bay has been known for having a good Biology department for a long time. Their education department is getting to be one of the higher rated ones.
Program Quality10The faculty at UW-Green Bay were by far some of the best instructors I have ever had. Also, the campus is beautiful.
Instruction8They prepared us for changing laws in Wisconsin before they came into effect. They also taught us new instructional strategies that were being developed.
How Difficult6Some of the lower level classes were not very challenging. However, the upper level classes got you thinking but were never very taxing.
Hands-On vs. BookishSome courses were by the book while others were lab based or field based.
Schedule Flexibility5I took summer courses. They also offer more and more online courses.
Academic Facilities8Again, the Biology department was great. They also had a hugh library and newer classrooms.
Social Life7Living on campus was a great social learning environment. They also try to take care of their students.
Placement Services5They tried to get me contacts in the area for jobs. But after graduation I was pretty much on my own.
Alumni Network7They still keep in contact with me and they send me yearly updates about my graduating class.

UW-Stevens Point • Stevens Point, WI
Studying Physical Education K-12 (completion in 2005)

3/7/2012

"I was very satisfied with my education at UWSP. Aside from the lack of social experience, my learning experience was great. I am successfully employed and enjoy my career overall."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesFor physical education, I feel like it's the best school in the state. The high reputation means a better chance of getting a job in a difficult job market.
Program Reputation7The school takes a lot of pride in the PE program. There is a strong reputation within the state and nation.
Program Quality8My school is very supportive of the PE program. Parents, administrators, and the community all give to the program and support the activities therein.
Instruction9UWSP was a very strong school in the physical education program. They are acclaimed as one of the best in the state. Focused and highly educated professors offer invaluable information to students.
How Difficult8UWSP was a difficult school for the PE Program. They expected a lot of field studies and hands-on learning. This was a lot of extra time.
Hands-On vs. BookishUWSP was adamant about providing hands-on learning. I participated in internships and student-teaching experiences on a semester basis.
Schedule Flexibility7There were lots of options for schedules. I was a student during the summer and at night. Plenty of options for a traveling student as well.
Academic Facilities8Plenty of good facilities. Lots of computer lab space, and never a hard time finding an open spot. Libraries were great and there were quiet study areas. Lots of new buildings and add-ons as well.
Social Life6As a nontraditional student, I did not participate in many social gatherings. But the students I did interact with on a day-to-day basis were very involved and seemed to enjoy the experience.
Placement Services7The professors were helpful after a resume had been submitted. Otherwise, they did very little to help you locate a job that would suit you.
Alumni Network4There is not a lot of communication between the alumni department and the alumni. I have not heard anything from them in 4 years.

University Of Wisconsin-Eau Claire • Eau Claire, WI
Studying Secondary Education-Physics (completion in 2010)

3/15/2012

"My goal with my college education was to learn how to be a teacher and gain the skills and experience necessary to get me a job upon graduation. UWEC provided all of this, with a great education program and a great environment in which to learn and experience all that college has to offer."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesAs far as education programs, UWEC is second to none. The Midwest in general is known for producing great teachers, and UWEC is one of the best within that group. If you go to this school, you will not have to worry about your credentials, marketability, or experience. They will all be provided within a great program.
Program Reputation9Eau Claire is known for having a high-quality education program. They originally started as a teaching college. This reputation was one of the reasons I chose the school, and it was a well-earned reputation.
Program Quality8UWEC had a great teaching program. The year I entered was the first year they started an experimental secondary education program where all the secondary education majors had their block classes together. It was called a cohort and it was a great lesson in collaboration; I feel like it really prepared me for the collaborative nature that you experience in an actual school environment. Talking to some of my friends about their college experiences, I feel blessed by the stringency and quality of my education at UWEC.
Instruction7Like any program, I took some classes in college where I learned little/felt my time would be better served elsewhere. Overall, however, the quality of instruction was high. My physics classes in particular were excellent and made me feel that I actually "knew" the subject; not just that I could teach basic high school content. I also appreciated the teaching-specific classes and how the instructors attempted to help us learn how to think as teachers, not just get done the minimum amount necessary to graduate.
How Difficult8The teaching program was one of the most difficult programs to get into at UWEC, and it also had one of the highest workloads. Part of the reason for this was because in addition to whatever subject you chose, you also were essentially getting a major in teaching. All the teaching classes combined comprised another 36 credits on top of the 36 credits of classes needed for your specific major. This meant a high workload, without adding in factors such as classroom observation and student teaching.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe education program at UWEC is really cutting edge in their teaching techniques and activities. We did very little book learning; most of the core education classes were a hands-on, collaborative learning experience.
Schedule Flexibility5Class schedule flexibility was pretty good for UW-Eau Claire, but not for the education program. Once you reached your core major classes, options and flexibility went down drastically. I feel like that's the case for most majors, however.
Academic Facilities7UWEC did not have cutting-edge technology, but they provided the necessary resources. The professors are second to none; they are caring, committed, and love doing their job.
Social Life8UWEC "Blugolds" take a lot of pride in their teams and their school, and they have a lot of fun doing so. The fact that the school is located in a relatively small town (70,000) means that there is a lot of community support and involvement as well.
Placement Services5I'm not very familiar with what other schools do in this area. At UW-Eau Claire, probably the best asset to our post-college career was our student teaching placements, which provided a great start in networking in references. During education classes, we talked a lot about how to become more marketable and strategies to get hired, but upon graduation, there weren't a lot of formal programs in place to make that happen.
Alumni NetworkI never really had contact with school alumni.

Concordia University • Mequon, WI
Studying Teaching Certification Program (completion in 2011)

4/6/2012

"The classes were thorough and the professors had excellent lessons and interactive elements. The person to help me get into the program was very helpful and always emailed me back answers the next day."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesConcordia is quickly becoming a top school for Education and it helps that many of the professors have taught elementary, middle and high school students. It was easy to get into the program and there were so many people who were able to help that anyone would find it effortless.
Program Reputation8Concordia is a private university so the standard is a bit higher then state colleges. Besides the nursing program, the bachelor's teaching program as well as the certification program are regarded as the top tier in local surrounding colleges.
Program Quality10I loved Concordia because 80% of my professors were seasoned teachers so their insights and stories helped give me a more intimate look at real teaching. I also liked the shortness of the program; I had one year of classes and half a year of student teaching.
Instruction10My professors detailed different strategies for classroom management, dealing with parents as well as working with other teachers in collaboration in similar areas. The professors were generous with handouts of worksheets.
How Difficult9The workload really did not affect me much until our portfolio was due. The individual classes did not have much coursework that was too difficult to get done once a week.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere was probably more book learning and discussions then hands on learning. I learn visually and I need to create and see things created in order to grasp a concept. Many professors lectured all night long.
Schedule Flexibility10Concordia provides some night classes and the certificate program was only one night a week for 3 hours. The night was determined by the students of the class before the program began.
Academic Facilities8The library at Concordia was plenty big enough with several shelves of space devoted to Education related books and resources. There were several areas in which people could meet to discuss homework or projects. The rooms in which our class met were mostly old and stuffy--basement classrooms.
Social Life8The school atmosphere was changing when I was there; the school was still sort of decorated in the 60s style of tile and brick. The students were pretty cheery and nice but I was only there at night once a week.
Placement ServicesI have not spoken to a Career Services person at the college. We were told to apply online for positions and use networking within our class to get a job.
Alumni Network3I have not had contact with any professors or Concordia professionals. The other students in my class have kept in touch through Facebook.
