Would Recommend?yesI would recommend it as I feel I have learned from it - not just from the courses but from my classmates and instructors as well.
Program Reputation8It is ranked in the top 50 programs in the nation. I only wish it could be ranked higher.
Program Quality9It was tailored perfectly based on time and schedule constraints. It covered a lot of ground and is highly rated.
Instruction8There were some instructors that were not very good. But overall, the quality of instruction was excellent.
How Difficult8There was a lot of homework, readings, and group work that we had to do. But as long as you put in the time and effort, it was not difficult.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was a balanced mix of hands-on and book learning. There was a mix of reading texts and case studies.
Schedule Flexibility8I was able to enroll in classes outside my normal schedule. I was also able to enroll in other campuses to suit my needs.
Academic Facilities10Very wide variety of resources. Instructors were readily available to help, and there was a large amount of reference material online.
Social Life7There were lots of social events offered. I participated in some of them.
Placement Services6I already had a job so this was not a priority for me. However, the career services was prepared to assist me if needed.
Alumni Network10The alumni network is very active in sending out communication on activities in my area. I still keep in contact with my classmates even though we have gone our separate ways.

Studying Software Engineering (completion in 2006)

"I think this was a well-rounded program. I've attended other schools where the instructors and professors were just there. SPSU is different, because the instructors are a tight-knit group, and they all work together to create great courses and experiences for the students. The professors put in a lot of hours to both teach and create a learning environment."

Would Recommend?maybeIt would depend on the student. If you really want to learn, and if you do better in a one-on-one setting or smaller classes with professors devoted to teaching, I'd recommend SPSU. If you have confidence in yourself, I'd recommend SPSU. If you need the brand, I'd say go elsewhere.
Program Reputation8SPSU is a technical school, and its graduates are expected to perform well. The school is the only one that offers a degree in software engineering in the State system. I chose it because it is more technical and tougher than KSU, a nearby larger school.
Program Quality10My program was excellent. I felt very confident when I graduated that I'd be able to do anything related to technology, but from the standpoint of solving problems.
Instruction10This is a small school. The class size is small. The professors are like a tight-knit family and they are committed to teaching excellence.
How Difficult10I had a 4.0 in my undergrad work. I struggled to get my 3.5 to complete the program. This school does not hand out A's.
Hands-On vs. BookishEach course had one or two projects generally due halfway through, and then at the end, too. It really depended on the course. The networking course was held in a room that contained racks of Cisco switches and routers, which we worked with every class.
Schedule Flexibility10This school offers undergrad and graduate degrees. For the graduate work, they offer a lot of night courses, because many of their students are already working. I had no trouble getting the courses I needed to graduate.
Academic Facilities9Their library was adequate and the Georgia library system shares resources. They also have two large computer labs, a tutoring center, a fabulous cafeteria and an on-campus coffee shop. Professors made previous tests available in the library for copy and review. Students created their own study groups. The library has numerous small, glass-enclosed rooms for students to meet and work together. They use Smart Boards and Vista/WebCT for online courses. They recently put in a state-of-the-art audio/visual system in a new conference center (I attended a software engineering meeting for the local SPIN chapter.)
Social Life5They have parties, sports, and other social events, and it is improving, because they have put in a bunch of dorms. This is a small campus. Many of the students are nontraditional and many are from other countries. It is a good experience if you are interested in diversity. The school activities include an annual bathtub race and robotics. They have a recently established swim team and well-established men's and women's basketball teams.
Placement Services10The Career Center is excellent. They go way beyond the call of duty to prep students for career fairs, with guidance on resumes, clothing, setting up interviews, and working with the community to create interest in the graduates. Even after graduation, they have continued to help me. Also, I won an iPod Touch through one of their programs. Very cool!
Alumni Network10They have a lot of activities, which I rarely attend. But that is only because I'm pretty busy. I do continue to make use of the facilities, such as the pool.
