Studying Computer Science (completion in 2007)

"I was mostly satisfied with the professional experience I received. I was also impressed with the social aspect, although the school lacked academically."

Would Recommend?maybeRutgers has evolved and changed over the years and thus I believe that would affect my decision. Most likely I wouldn't advise someone to go due to raised tuition and an increase in student populace.
Program Reputation7The school holds a reputation of having strong programs, but the computer science field sometimes falls under the radar. However, the school is known for difficult curriculums.
Program Quality5School prepares you theoretically, but does not focus intensely enough on the programming itself. The actual application of theory is also lacking.
Instruction7Teachers provided a good amount of information and preparation, but they often did not explain how the industry worked. They also tended to highlight their own skills rather than pass on skills.
How Difficult8Software application is actually very stressing. It was highly regarded. The only majors that were more difficult were engineering and pharmacy.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe school provided very little hands on work. The material was mostly theoretical and was not applied. Most application experience I received was post college.
Schedule Flexibility8Rutgers provided much flexibility in its schedules. Classes could be taken almost any semester and in any order. The offerings were both during the semester, during the summer, and online.
Academic Facilities8The facilities at the school provided a strong space for studying and working with others. Professors were scarce but I had a good experience with them nevertheless.
Social Life10Rutgers provides a dynamic atmosphere in which to socialize and build relationships. I still hold these relationships professionally and socially.
Placement Services2The school did not help at all with career placement. It only advised us as to which would be the best places and websites to look for jobs.
Alumni NetworkI do not keep in touch with the school, and thus I am not sure about the alumni support offered. I believe the support would be minimal.

Studying Web-Based Business Application Programming (completion in 2003)

"Chubb gave me exactly what I was expecting. I was able to advance in my career based on what I learned and the certificate I received."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeI would always advise someone to get a college degree in Computer Science if possible. If that is not feasible, I would recommend Chubb Institute as a very viable alternative.
Program Reputation5I'm really not aware of Chubb's current reputation in the industry. At the time I graduated, they were respected enough that I was hired based on my certificate.
Program Quality9Chubb Institute provides a very focused, intensive certificate program in Web-Based Business Application Development, from computer basics through advanced database and object-oriented programming concepts. Although some of the early classes felt a bit rushed, the segments on Oracle, Java and JDBC were excellent.
Instruction9The advanced classes were excellent. Chubb did fall down a bit when it came to career preparation. The lecturers who came to speak about finding a job in the IT field basically spent two hours telling the class that we were unlikely to get hired in our chosen field. I felt that this was a poor way to motivate people.
How Difficult7The program was challenging, but not impossible. Teachers were always available to answer questions and review the most difficult material.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe object of the program was to write a web-based ordering and inventory tracking application for a store, using an Oracle database and Java Server Pages. It was almost completely hands-on.
Schedule Flexibility1The schedule was writ in stone. Missing more than three classes meant you were expelled from the program and would have to start over when the next session began.
Academic Facilities8All materials, including laptop computers, were provided by the school. Most of the professors were very available, although one refused to provide a way to contact him outside of class time.
Social Life5There were no parties or school-organized events. Some of us got together on our own initiative.
Placement Services1There was an entire session that was supposed to be dedicated to how to find a job. The lecturers spent the entire session telling us that we probably weren't going to get hired in our chosen field. It was so bad that halfway through, I turned on my laptop and spent the rest of the session doing class work. I later complained to the school about the attitude of the lecturers, as did several of my classmates.
Alumni Network2As far as I know, alumni networking and support are basically nonexistent at Chubb. Some of my class chose to remain in touch, but the school itself did little or nothing to facilitate this.
Review your current or past school and help others make better career decisions.
