University Of Washington • Seattle, WA
Studying History (completion in 1999)

7/15/2011

"College was a good time and offered a good set of experiences and taught me other skills that I use today. Much of my experience guiding BU's to the right solution is based on the methods I learned through history papers."

Would Recommend?maybeI cannot speak to this from a position of "I know" due to my degree and my career being different tracks. I know several other people who did get a BS in computer science and they are knowledgeable.
Program Reputation6The University of Washington is know for some sub-areas of history. The overall program is good, but there are others out there that are significantly better.
Program Quality10I had brilliant teachers who knew how to engage students and get them interested in history. There was also the opportunity to help out with research for papers and articles and several of the professors encouraged you to do that.
Instruction5I learned a lot, but it was no way related to the field I work in currently. Most of my technical skills and experience was gained from working my way up the ranks of a tech company.
How Difficult9The History major involves a lot of papers that are beyond the fluff that you learn to put out in high school. You basically apply a version of the scientific method to write them.
Hands-On vs. BookishHistory is primarily a book focused process in which you need to use a book to prove something.
Schedule Flexibility1Most classes for history take place during the day. There were some late evening lectures for fun, but the bulk of the day was spent in a class room. Online options weren't really available.
Academic Facilities6I feel like the facilities and resources were generally good. Many of the buildings I was in have been redone so they are much improved. There were a large number of libraries that were well stocked and several computer labs that always had space.
Social Life10I was in the marching band. It introduced me to my wife and I got to hang out with friends, play music, and travel.
Placement Services5I will have to say average because I did not avail myself of them. I was working as a help desk support agent while I worked on finishing college and then I stayed in that area while I tried to get into a teaching program. That was unsuccessful, so I eventually focused on learning new skills and taking on more responsibility and moving up the IT chain.
Alumni Network5The alumni do a lot, but it all depends on what area you are in. I was in the marching band and I still participate in alumni events and I help fundraise for alumni events.

University Of Washington Bothell • Bothell, WA
Studying Applied Computing (completion in 2010)

11/13/2011

"I received enough education to make a successful career of my interest in computing. I can use a lot of what I learned practically in my job. Of course, I learned a lot more on the job, but I think you would find that from any program."

Would Recommend?yesIt's a solid program with lots of directly applicable curriculum. I have already encouraged a couple of friends interested in pursuing computer science or applied computing to check out the UWB, especially because of their flexible schedules.
Program Reputation8The Applied Computing program is relatively new, but the Computer Science department has a good reputation. I like the fact that they offer programs with both facets.
Program Quality8The Applied Computing program has more of an emphasis on project management than coding, which applies more at my current job. They offer a wide variety of "special topic" courses that keep the program fresh.
Instruction7It varies with the instructor and how that meshes with how you learn. There are fewer instructors, so you learn how each teaches and what they look for in a successful project.
How Difficult5The workload is average. The difficulty is average. However, this is a BA program with a soft skills emphasis rather than a BS/science emphasis.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt depends on the individual instructor. Some favor traditional teaching methods; others prefer "modern" approaches. Most advanced classes include lab work.
Schedule Flexibility10I worked full time while getting my degree. Most classes were offered evenings at some point during my academic career.
Academic Facilities8They have both a Linux and Windows lab, exclusive to CSS students. As a commuter campus, they have more, smaller classrooms to accommodate more, varied classes.
Social Life5As a working adult returning to school, I didn't participate much in the social aspect. However, there always seemed to be a variety of events advertised.
Placement Services10Even as an alum, I receive a couple of emails a week from the program internship manager, advising of job opportunities. Most are entry level, but it's nice to know the resource is available if I need it.
Alumni Network7It's probably too good. They pester me all the time for support - I can't seem to shake them off.

Bellevue College • Bellevue, WA
Studying MCSE Fast Track (completion in 2000)

"Bellevue College gave me the skills I needed to get interviews and ultimately my first job in IT. Without their program, I would not have been able to build the career I have."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

Would Recommend?yesAnyone interested in the IT field would do well to check out Bellevue College. I am pleased with where it has taken me, and others will be, too.
Program Reputation9Bellevue College is known in the area for providing a good level of education, particularly in the technology field.
Program Quality8Bellevue College provided very good basic training, which allowed me to get my foot in the door. They could benefit from a stronger focus on real-world career training.
Instruction8All of my teachers were engaging, with good knowledge of the topic. They could improve by focusing some on how to get a job in the "real world" after the program is completed.
How Difficult9This course was 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. It was a moderately challenging pace, with a tight schedule of exams.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe were able to do hands-on and lab exercises for almost every topic. I was very pleased with the amount of hands-on time we received.
Schedule Flexibility5My program had a very specific schedule, so it was not flexible. The enhancement classes I took were very flexible with day and evening options, as well as online in some cases.
Academic Facilities10Everything we needed was provided. The school was very prepared with their facilities and materials.
Social Life9Because of the schedule my program had, we built strong ties among the students. In some cases, that even extended to the relationships with our instructors.
Placement Services5I didn't have a need to use these services, as I had already lined up jobs for myself. Those in my class who did use the services were pleased.
Alumni Network5I haven't utilized the school's alumni network, so I can't speak about its effectiveness. As I understand from others, it is useful.

Program Quality6Central has a strong computer science program. The teachers were excellent.
Instruction7The instruction was awesome. I learned a lot.
How Difficult5The workload was heavy. Some courses were very difficult.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe class sizes were fairly small. The teachers were approachable.
Schedule Flexibility5Seniors get first pick. My schedule always worked out.
Academic Facilities6The library was great. The computer labs were top notch.
Social Life5There were numerous clubs and groups. There were also many parties.
Placement Services3I didn't use it much. It didn't have a good reputation.
