Ripon College • Ripon, WI
Studying Communication (completion in 1999)

"Ripon College provided me a liberal arts college experience that prepared me for any career I wanted to pursue after graduation. Because my education focused on teaching me how to learn, as opposed to preparing me for a specific career, I have been able to work in the IT field for the past 5 years without specific technical education."

Would Recommend?yesI believe that a liberal arts education, like the one I received at Ripon College, can prepare a student for any career. The focus on problem solving, the teaching of learning skills, and interdisciplinary studies are all reasons why Ripon College can prepare a student for success in their career.
Program Reputation8The reputation of the Communication Department at Ripon College is built on a few factors. One of these factors is that over 90% of its graduates have jobs waiting for them after graduation. In addition, students from this department are regularly accepted into the best Communication graduate programs in the country.
Program Quality8Ripon College is a classic, small, liberal arts college. The communication department was focused on rhetoric, persuasion, and logic. The coursework was quite challenging and the standards were set very high. A large percentage of students from this department went on to graduate programs at the best graduate schools in the country in the field of communication.
Instruction8Because of very high standards and expectations and excellent faculty, along with personal attention in the classroom, I believe the quality of instruction in this department at Ripon College was excellent. While my field of study did not relate directly to my current job as a System Analyst, it did prepare me for success in my career.
How Difficult8Expectations were set quite high for all coursework in this department. The department was known as a department for only those wishing to be challenged. The coursework and subject matter covered was often the level of graduate-level coursework at other universities.
Hands-On vs. BookishService learning was a central part of the experience a student had at Ripon College. Hands-on learning was a part of almost every course I took. This also often included applying coursework to real business or organizational situations.
Schedule Flexibility2Ripon College is a traditional liberal arts college of approximately 1,000 students. The flexibility of class schedules is very limited and almost all students are residential.
Academic Facilities5Because Ripon College is quite small in terms of enrollment, there are limited resources on campus for things like libraries, labs, etc. That being said, the availability of professors is extremely high, so much so that I knew many of them personally and still remain in contact with them 15 years after graduation.
Social Life8The social experience I had at Ripon College was outstanding. This was primarily due to the fact that it was a residential college in which almost all students lived in on-campus housing for all 4 years of their enrollment. This living situation fostered a spirit of common experience that brought the students together.
Placement Services4As a small institution, the career service office at Ripon College offered limited services. That being said, they did provide basic services, including hosting companies on campus to do interviewing for job opportunities.
Alumni Network5The alumni network at Ripon College is quite dedicated and closely connected. That being said, the alumni base is quite small compared to other universities.

"My school is average. There is no other way to put it. It is not great and glorified, nor is it poor and frowned upon."

Would Recommend?maybeIf they needed an affordable school that can give them a good education, I would recommend it. I was able to get through school with a good education, while not having many school loans.
Program ReputationI am unsure of the reputation my school has regarding my major. I will assume it is neither good nor bad.
Program Quality6My school was okay for the program. I feel like they gave a jack-of-all-trades type of program. They tried to include so much stuff that you were unable to master much of anything.
Instruction5Some of my instructions were great. A lot of them had a language barrier with the students, though.
How Difficult7It was fairly difficult. I assume it was not the hardest course out there, though.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was mainly hands on, because I was doing a lot of computer programming at the time. There still was some material where you needed to bury your nose in a book, though.
Schedule Flexibility7Flexibility was great. I was able to work a job throughout college and make my schedule work around my work hours.
Academic Facilities5The computers were starting to become out of date. The library was great, but no one really uses a library too much these days.
Social Life5The parties were great. The sports teams were so-so. The area that the campus is located around is a real cool place to live.
Placement Services2I basically found a job on my own. I had no use for the job placement center.
Alumni Network3I have no connection with the alumni network. The only thing I hear from alumni is requests for donations.
