Would Recommend?yesI would recommend the University of Missouri Rolla (now known as Missouri Science and Technology) to any perspective student with Science, Math or Engineering aspirations. My son currently attends the university and is enjoying is college experience.
Program Reputation8The University of Missouri Rolla is the number one rated engineering university in the Midwest and is in the top 20 nationwide. The "pure" Computer Science programs are ranked lower than the engineering disciplines, but the computer engineering and embedded applications are still well respected.
Program Quality8My degree was not focused on software development, but I took several programming classes as electives. Rolla is a great school for Engineering and Computer Design. Their Software curriculum was limited to Fortran, C and assembly programming and Database design principles.
Instruction9Rolla is well respected for it's Engineering and Computer programs. The instruction was a good mix of theory from class room instruction and practical application from labs. Many of the professors were text book authors, actively involved in research or had industry experience in their field of study.
How Difficult9The engineering and science programs at Rolla are extremely challenging. The freshmen attrition rate was greater than 30% when I attended the University. A typical semester class load would range from 12-16 hours for most students. It was not unusual to see 2-3 hours of homework/study from each class.
Hands-On vs. BookishRolla tends to be biased towards the academic side of the scale. While there are numerous labs associated with majority of the upper level courses and many of freshmen classes. For example, my degree did not require a "formal" senior project but I was offered 15 hours of advanced theory and "Special Topic" courses during my last semester.
Schedule Flexibility7The primary Rolla campus offers the traditional day time class hours and Summer course offerings. I was not offered any evening or online options for any of my classes. However, the University offers several extension programs in other cities, like St. Louis, for Master's degree programs. Those programs did offer night time and daytime class hours.
Academic Facilities9Rolla offers a very comprehensive set of resources to their student population. The library was open 16 hours a day and filled with three floors of technical papers, journals and books of every genre. The professors were always available, even beyond their posted office hours. Tutors, TAs and study groups were also available for anyone who needed assistance.
Social Life6Rolla is a very academic school. The students attending the university are in the top 1% of ACT scores. There are fraternal groups on campus and social events are planned, but the attendance varies. I would say school spirit and athletics are not the primary reason students attend Rolla. Bottom line if you are looking for a party, one can always be found, but academics are the highest priority for most Rolla students
Placement Services10The University of Missouri Rolla places close to 95% of their graduates in their career of choice; with many graduates having multiple job opportunities. Graduates from Rolla have the highest starting salary of any college in the Midwest.
Alumni Network8The alumni network for Rolla is reasonably active, especially in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas. There is an active mailing list and organized activities offered several times a year.
