Student/Alumnus Reviews of Schools for This Career and State

Utah Valley University • Orem, UT
Studying Software Engineering (completion in 2011)

8/20/2011

"I was very satisfied. I do wish they had offered more classes focusing in newer technologies, such as iphone or Android application programming. Also, if schedules had allowed, there were other classes I would have loved to take... but they always overlapped with required courses."

Would Recommend?maybeI'd leave that up to their situation. For me it was perfect, but for somebody looking for a more top name school and recruiters coming with jobs to them... then it wouldn't be the best match.
Program Reputation5I don't think it's particularly high on the list. However, I do think UVU has a very solid CS program that is gaining popularity now that the school has university status.
Program Quality7While the school provided a lot of hands on coding (which was one of the reasons I chose it), there was a struggle with the quality of students. Sometimes a student would lack basic skills for a class and thus slow down the learning of the entire class.
Instruction9Most teachers were very well-qualified and taught things clearly. There were just a few who seemed kind of nonchalant about their teaching.
How Difficult8I think it was appropriately challenging. It would have been easier if I hadn't been working nearly full time as a web developer while attending school.
Hands-On vs. BookishI chose to go here for this reason - the hands on learning. Other schools focus so much on theory, and I felt UVU offered a good mixture of the two.
Schedule Flexibility4This was often a struggle for me as I worked off campus as well. However, with the university's increasing enrollment, I think more and more classes are being offered at more of a variety of times.
Academic Facilities9Labs and classrooms are quite nice. The wonderful thing about a small program was that I got to know most of my CS professors extremely well.
Social Life5I think UVU offers all of these things and has a great selection of social opportunities. However, I was so swamped working and studying and also have a wife who attends another school, so I was never really into these things.
Placement Services3It was pretty pathetic. Outside of Utah there was very little to no recruiting, although there were a few companies that sent out local emails looking for programmers.
Alumni Network3As far as I know, UVU does not really have much of an alumni network. The networking for finding jobs and such out of school was rather poor unless you wanted to stay very local.
