Federal Grants: FSEOG - Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

The purpose of the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is to further subsidize the neediest students who already qualify for the Pell Grant. These grants are administered directly by the financial aid office of the approximately 4000 participating institutions. These institutions provide 25 percent of the funding for the FSEOG Grants that they give. There is limited funding at each school, so the students with the lowest Expected Family Contribution are given priority.

Who is Eligible?

Undergraduate students who qualify for a Pell Grant and are attending one of the approximately 4000 schools that participate in the program are eligible. It is important to note that not all schools participate in this program. Students that may be eligible for a FSEOG may want to consider this as they choose a school.

How much money can a student get?

Students have been receiving between $100 and $4000 annually – although this can change from year to year. The amount depends on when the student applies, the student’s financial need, the amount of funding at the school providing the grant and the policies of the financial aid office at the school.

How does a student apply?

Students will need to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students list the schools they have applied to on the FAFSA so that they will receive the results. The schools will then use the FAFSA results to determine eligibility for the FSEOG grant. The student’s college will notify them via a financial aid award letter if they are eligible for the FSEOG and/or other financial aid.

How is the money disbursed?

The school may apply it directly to the student’s school costs, or pay directly to the student or a combination of both methods. They will disburse the funds at least twice each academic year.

FSEOG Tips

Submit the FASFA Early! - FSEOG funding is limited at each school so the FASFA should be submitted online as soon as possible after January 1st to increase the chances of receiving money.
