The continent of Asia has the highest population of any continent with four billion people, representing about 60 percent of the world's population. Asia's 48 countries include China and India, the two most populous countries in the world, as well as Indonesia, Pakistan, Russia and Japan which are also among the 10 most populous countries.

Asia has some of the fastest growing economies in the world with India and China growing dramatically over the past decade and South Korea expected to have the second highest per capita income by 2025. The economies of Asia are primarily driven by natural resources, manufacturing and financial services. Although a handful of countries such as Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Israel have very high standards of living, the majority of Asian countries rank in the bottom half of the United Nations Human Development Index which is a combined measure of life expectancy, education and income.
Various Asian nations participate in trade and economic associations such as the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement, Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership, the ASEAN Free Trade Area and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. These groups aim to improve the economic conditions of the countries involved.
Higher Education
Higher education varies widely across countries in Asia with some countries providing very high quality, internationally-recognized education while other countries struggle against various economic, political and cultural challenges to provide basic higher education. The differences in quality and access tend to be defined by a country's overall economic situation.
Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China and Singapore have some of the highest quality higher education institutions in the region with each having their top tier universities recognized in the top 100 of the QS World University rankings in recent years. Among the highest ranking in 2010 were the University of Hong Kong which ranked 23rd and the University of Tokyo which ranked 24th in the world.
