BrainTrack Announces Teaching Schools Scholarship Winners for Spring 2010

Saint Joseph College and Ohio State University Winners Selected for their Insights for Prospective Students

MARLBOROUGH, MA, June 2, 2010 –– BrainTrack, a widely referenced higher-education resource, today announced the Spring 2010 winners for its BrainTrack Teaching Schools Scholarship, a biannual scholarship for education degree students that is designed to help prospective K-12 teaching students. The winners are Bridget Horan of Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, CT, who received the $1,000 first-place award, and Carmen McFarland of Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, who received a $500 second-place award.

"The essay responses from all the entrants offer a valuable set of insights for those considering teaching career paths," said David Siegel, Vice President of Operations with BrainTrack's publisher, Futuremeld, LLC. "We are publishing a selection of these as student stories. The winners were selected based on factors such as the creativity and practicality of their essays."

"When I graduate, I know that I will be well prepared to teach middle or high school in urban, suburban or rural settings as well as traditional public schools or alternative academies. I also know what to expect when working with exceptional students, English Language Learners, and different learning styles," said BrainTrack Teaching Scholarship winner Bridget Horan, who is working toward her Bachelor's in English Certification in Secondary Education at Saint Joseph College. Her winning essay encouraged prospective students to identify a personal teaching philosophy early on by raising questions and debating policies with classmates and professors.

BrainTrack Teaching Scholarship runner up Carmen McFarland overcame her fear of speaking in front of people after travelling to Ghana and Costa Rica, where she became involved in educating children. She hopes to eventually teach first grade in an international or bilingual school, after completing her Master's in Education (Early Childhood) at Ohio State University.

A summary of useful tips offered by entrants, as well as the winning essay entries, are published in BrainTrack's Teaching Degree Student Stories section.
