American Evangelical Lutheran Church Colleges
In 1874, Danish immigrants to the United States took the name Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. In 1878, they organized formally in Neenah, Wisconsin, with a constitution accepted in 1879. The name the American Evangelical Lutheran Church was adopted in 1954. In 1962, the American Evangelical Lutheran Church, the United Lutheran Church in America, the Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the Suomi Synod merged to form the Lutheran Church of America, a mainline Protestant denomination.
