Evangelical Congregational Church Colleges


Founded in 1800 by the Rev. Jacob Albright and influenced by John Wesley and the Methodist movement, the Evangelical Congregational Church, is a "body of American Christians chiefly of German descent.” In 1891, some members of the Evangelical Association left to form the United Evangelical Church. Thirty-one years later the two groups reunited and renamed themselves the Evangelical Church. Those congregations who chose not to re-unite formed a body called the Evangelical Congregational Church. Globally, the Evangelical Congregational Church has over 150 church communities and with approximately 460 international churches in seven different nations.

Evangelical Congregational Church Higher Education Overview

As an heir of the Wesleyan tradition, the Evangelical Congregational Church placed a high value on the education of their clergy. Begun in 1953, the Evangelical Theological Seminary, located in Myerstown, Pennsylvania, is affiliated with the Evangelical Congregational Church. As well as offering graduate degrees in divinity and religion, Evangelical Theological Seminary also confers graduate degrees in specialized areas including marriage and family therapy, as well as numerous certificate programs.
