Jewish Colleges
The Jewish religion, or Judaism, is one of the first monotheistic religions and one of the oldest still in practice. The US history of Judaism dates back to the 1600s with small numbers of immigrants. Not until the 19th century did the US see large-scale Jewish immigration. More than 2 million Jews arrived between the late 1800s and the 1920's, primarily from Eastern Europe. These Jews regularly settled into metropolitan New York City, establishing one of the world’s major concentrations of Jewish population.
Jewish Higher Education Overview
The majority of Jewish colleges and universities are located in New York State, although the American Jewish University (AJU) is located in Los Angeles, CA. AJU sustains one of the lowest student-faculty ratios in the nation at 7:1. Of the over 20 Jewish schools, the majority offer bachelor and professional degrees, and many offer Master’s and Doctoral degrees as well. Many, if not most, of these schools are focused on training students to become Jewish professionals, such as Jewish rabbis and teachers. Most of these schools have student enrollments of under one thousand, often with just a few hundred.
